So here we go again. Third time lucky? I sure as hell hope so. This is going to go more the Jack O'Connor way, but not entirely. As school doesn't start for another two weeks, I hope to keep the pace high until then. I play with Daily's Expansion pack, and as I'm quite new to PCM 14, with hard difficulty. I assume I'll switch up to extreme after a few races though. Thanks to Jesley and knockout for helping with stats, and telling me that PCM 14 was on steam sales. Wink

Other than that, there's not much to be said, so we might as well let the games begin. Grin

Interview
It's already dark outside, you can see the nocturnal silhouettes of the red square through the windows of my office. We sit down opposite each other at my desk, a tape recorder between us. This might be a long night, although it has already been a long day.

Everybody was crazy about him, trying to make him sign autographs, or take a selfie. Meanwhile I was sitting at the back of the airplane, preparing this interview. At the airport it was no better, it was mayhem.

He seems to be the most famous man in town now. At last we're settled down, the tape is running.

“So, Ivan, lets start at the very beginning. Tell me something about your childhood, some background information”.

The Town
“See Sergey, you need to know that I was born in a small, small town in the middle of nowhere, in the plains of Siberia. So small in fact, that it didn't even have a name. We always just called it “town”.

Everybody in our town worked in the logging industry. All the men would disappear off in an old, battered, soviet-era pick-up truck when the sun rose, and wouldn't be back before sunset.

The mothers would do the housework in our small, wooden homes, whilst the men that were too old to work sat in the inn all day and drank vodka.

Everybody under 16 went to school, but as soon as you turned 16 and had served your time there, you followed in your parent's path. I was meant to do exactly that, too.”

Glad you didn't write Serbia instead of Siberia, as I saw that mistake is quite common on the internet nowdays. Pfft Anyhow, really interesting story so far. Руиснег had luck to be born in a little town, something that everyone on this world should experience!

Hockey
“And after school, that's when you went cycling?”

“No, not at the start at least. As you, especially you as a sportswriter, know, Ice Hockey is the big thing here. In the winter we played it every afternoon on the frozen lake, until our mothers called us for dinner.

In the summer it was much the same, just that we played on the streets with a tennis ball, and went out after dinner again, too.”

“So that's where you fell in love with sports.”

“No, not really. Truth be told I was quite useless. I hardly ever got the puck. The only thing I really took from this was a fighting spirit.”

@Sutty I hope so, too. I've been working on this for a while though now, so hopefully.... Smile

@Shonak Excellent..... Smile

@Knockout Thanks. Going by my experience with Jack, it could be along one. At least I feel like I could've continued Jack forever, had PCM 13 not got in my way.

@Admir Yes, that might not exactly be outstanding cyrillic. Pfft

@Admir once more As a city kid, I can't really say anything. Wink
And who the fuck gets Serbia and Siberia mixed up?

Escape
“But when did you pick up cycling then?”

“Well, one day, we went out to play summer-hockey as usual, and I was as useless as ever. In fact, I was so useless, I didn't get the puck for one straight hour. After that, I decided I needed another way to spend my afternoons.

The very first time, I didn't even go out to cycle. I just wanted to get away, as far away as I could, and the bike was the easiest way to do that.

I would cycle out the road - we only had one road, that ended in our town – and of course the dirt track the men took to get to the logging camp - cycle aimlessly through the small forest roads nearby, find a nice place to sit (say, a fallen tree), read a book or study, then cycle back.

And that was all I did that summer.”

Siberian Winter
“Then, I began to realise – I was enjoying the riding more than anything else about my afternoons.

In fact, I'd say I enjoyed it more than anything else full stop. But now I had a problem – winter was approaching relentlessly.

What could I do? The answer was as simple as it was crazy – I cycled on. The main road was only cleared of snow every Sunday, when supplies, letters, amazon orders – simply everything a community needed to sustain itself – were brought in, so I had that day and if I was lucky Monday too to ride on good roads.

The other days, I rode the dirt track to the logging camp. I didn't have as much freedom as I had on the big roads, and it wasn't cleared of snow, the snow was just made to slush by the big lorries, but it was good training, if nothing else.”
