It's hard to accept, but you can't change the past. (...)
You can't go back and manipulate things to the way you want.
Because life would be meaningless and boring and just not worth living.
But, you can change the future and that's the beautiful thing about life.
Yes, you will make mistakes. And yes, you will have bad days.
But as long as you let the past go, you'll have a bright future ahead of you.
Know that things were meant to happen. That each day you learn something.
Life is like a rope, twined in all its complexities and yet weaved into one marvelous stream that gives you the chance to make something amazing.
So, grab hold of it and imagine the possibilities. ~ Quote by Kayode Anthony
Thibault and Joseph have started their journey to finding a brighter future.

That is correct, but the account also has one more key purpose that we will be revealing later in the Chapter as well.

That's so deep, quote me if you cried

The World is at War. (...)
It's the tragedy of life.
Brought on by a twist of fate.
Causing suffering to those who let it.
For too long, I have drawn the shortest straw. For too long.
Sweet Becca. She went before her time.
I captured what she was all about, just before she was taken from me
Sweet Alice. So much like her mother.
She had the same free, kind spirit and now she has been taken from me
Almost exactly 19 years ago, I was the Champion of the World.
And where did that take me? What did it do for me?
It opened a world of pain, a world of grief.
The Curse of the Rainbow Jersey

kqyt - IF you haven't read A Day then you won't understand this, that's normal. A Day is pretty much a whole backstory to this story, just like The Comeback is. Long story short: Henry Vergnaud was world champion but then suffered some personal losses (wife died) and he retired early from cycling. His son, Thibault, is one of the main characters here.
sutty68 - It sure is.. |

"You ready?" He didn't look ready. (...)
"Take a deep breath you'll be fine, it's in your blood."
Cycling was. Getting good results, well that's a whole nother story.
I handed Joseph a helmet then mounted my bike. Down the road we went.
I didn't expect much. He looked completely out of shape.
And I was right. Barely 10 miles into his first training ride he had enough.
His body couldn't take it, I waited alongside the road as he threw up his lunch.
"Want to turn your life around? This is the price you have to pay."
He just glared at me before turning around and puking some more.
While his hatred of me grew, I knew this had to be done for his benefit.
Joseph might not agree with me, but his first training ride was a success.

So, either way Joseph is really utterly out of shape, with some peach-resembling body, or Travis put in a way too high pace for the first training ride.

10miles first cycling training xD
Reminds me of "On wheel with Dag Otto Laurizten"
They had a visitor that had never ridden a racing-cycle before, and they trained him for 2 days before cycling Paris-Roubaix amateur race

Here are your keys, Mr. Vergnaud (...)
I settled in an apartment in Grenoble.
Finally I was getting my life on track, I was doing something.
The city felt a bit strange and I admit I was a little bit afraid. But finally,
my life was mine.
I didn't have much, though.
My money, my white pre-war Pinarello bike.
I guess that's all. That's what I had to show for a lifetime.
But I was still young and so determined to make something of my life!
After the war, Grenoble was the big place to be in the South of France.
The atmosphere here was optimistic and the people looked happy.
I had even heard rumours of a bike race being organized.
So the very next day, I went out, met some people, heard some things.
I never thought I'd fit in so well, so quickly. But I did.
I was loving every second of Grenoble.
Honestly, I couldn't wait to get my life started, a second chance!
But there was something I had to do, first,
no matter how hard it would be...

He's got some stuff to work with, doesn't seem like "not having much"

@All: Thanks for the comments everyone, we enjoy reading them. By now you are all probably getting a little sick of the narrative stuff but rest assured, the racing is right around the corner. We needed the rather lengthy back story to set the stage for what is to come.
