Tour of Oman - Stage 5
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0001.jpg

The GC was changed a lot on the Green Mountain. The strongest riders more or less have taken control of the GC with Marquez being a deserved leader after winning the most difficult two stages so far.
But one rider can`t be happy as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Uran surely was not expecting to be 5th only after the mountain stage. Today might be his last chance to change the result and surely he belongs to the top favourites. Riders ahead of him i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Eastman, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo surely want to avoid this.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0002.jpg

6 riders form todays breakaway. Some of those surely had expected to be in a decent GC position now but instead they have to go the hard way to get a stage win at least to save the race somehow.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Serpa
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Wang
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Abreu
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mac.png Jaramillo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Schrangl
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.pngPossoni

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0009.jpg

No interest at all at the first sprint. Serpa, Abreu and Wang roll over the line first.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0011.jpg

Quickstep knows about the possible danger inside the peloton. Marquez sits in a good position though having everything under control.
60km left and a ~6min gap for the breakaway slowly going down.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0015.jpg

15km later the first climb is reached and Quickstep still controlling peloton and breakaway as the gap is down to 3'50.
5 Quickstep riders ahead of Marquez shows their strength here.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0018.jpg

That the climb can lead to a selection is nicely shown here. The peloton is down to 75 riders while two groups of 33 and 32 riders are behind.
Most notable names behind:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Peterson (8./+3'26''Wink
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Gonzalo (9./+3'39''Wink
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Lloret (12.)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Sinelobov (15.)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Hiratsuka (17.)
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/afr.png Terciado (18.)
Most of those are climbers who not feeling well on the shorter climbs. But in especially Lloret and Gonzalo are a bit surprising as they belong to the less one dimensional climbers.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0027.jpg

Passing the hill from the other direction the gap is down to a bit more than 2min.
A few small attacks now as the KoM is not far.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0029.jpg

The pace behind is very fast now.
Marquez himself coming to the front doing some work on his own to avoid any attacks. Peloton down to 65!

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0031.jpg

Possoni was the strongest and takes the KoM points ahead of Wang and Serpa.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0033.jpg

But also behind a few gaps.
In front i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Marquez with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Blazquez.

But others are not far behind such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Uran, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Ji, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png De La Fuente, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Eastman, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Zeits, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Nieve, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Simon, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Zeits Dyachenko, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Barredo and a bit struggling but not dropped i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Karpets.

Others such as Ardila Cano, Efimkin, Kinoshita are also not that far back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0048.jpg

A group of 57 is coming together again being 2'14 behind the breakaway with 25km to go.
Of the early dropped riders Gonzalo and Lloret made it back actually, while the others around Peterson are probably not being able to come back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0050.jpg

Last climb and again Marquez comes to the front keeping the pace high enough to avoid surprising attacks.
Behind him though all riders, you would expect to attack: Cataldo, Uran, Eastman, Ji, Nieve, Zeits...

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0054.jpg

And here it comes. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Cataldo, 4th in the GC still wants that podium spot and attacks.
Behind him Uran, Marquez, Eastman immediately react.
And as before Karpets looks weak today not being in the first positions.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0058.jpg

Possoni, Schrangl and Wang are the only survivors of the breakaway. The others were dropped here and are in between this trio and the favourites.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0060.jpg

Two favourites actually created a gap.
Race leader Marquez together with Cataldo. They joined former breakaway riders Jaramillo and Serpa, while Abreu is dropping back and also Uran and Eastman couldn`t follow. They are back in the 55 rider peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0062.jpg

Uran, Eastman and Ji plus some work by Karcher for Karpets try to close the gap. Only 5km left and 37s.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0065.jpg

Reaching the finish line the former breakaway trio still has a small gap, while Marquez is almost caught.
Can those here take the 5th stage?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0067.jpg

Marquez starts the sprint in his group with Cataldo and Jaramillo surprisingly looking still well.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0069.jpg

But the riders to be in front are those with Possoni starting the sprint now. Wang and Schrangl behind them and the gap is melting a lot.
Almost no mentionable gaps are seen any longer.
So the GC attacks weren`t really successful.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0070.jpg

Schrangl can`t challenge them but Wang is coming on the side now passing an exhausted Possoni...

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0071.jpg

...and taking a huge win for Compal-Merida.
Possoni 2nd in a photo finish with Schrangl coming over as 3rd.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0072.jpg

Jaramillo surprises with his sprint qualities as 4th after being in the breakaway all day. Still outsprinting Marquez, who finishes 5th ahead of Cataldo.
From behind Zeits, Simon, De La Fuente and Eastman were the fastest of the peloton.

But no gaps at all here as the groups fusioned during the sprint.
Also good news for CSC and FCB as Gonzalo/Lloret are safely in that group even in the top20 of the stage.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20of%20Oman/mg2014_oman_5_PCM0074.jpg

Biggest loser of today is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Peterson, who can`t defend his 8th GC. Losing lots of time on the hills drop him back to 18th.
