knockout - Thanks for your input! Yeah, Bradley has been a big help this season. I hope I can keep him with Matthias for a while.

Batista15 - That's the plan!

The Hobbit - Luckily it didn't fail, then Pfft

Jakstar22 - They are a good duo, that's for sure!

TimoCycling - Yeah, now that you mention it. Though Renshaw is in the race, too, he should've recognized the signs Pfft

Nice story Ian, you can clearly tell it's one of yours. Anyway I've been reading a lot of it now, and you'll get a better comment from me once I've caught up.
Nice job mate Wink

Daggen - Thanks Wink Hope you enjoy catching up!

Time to defend the leader's jersey in the hills. Last year I nearly did it. This year I want to do one place better!

Can't say this will be an easy day. Our team is not experienced on these roads so we'll have a tough time today.

Today was a matter of staying cool and keeping my nose out of the wind. I did just that.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2074/epo04_zps016f7a5c.jpg

We were in luck. Other teams stepped up and helped keep the pack together. There were some attacks, but everything came back together for the final (small) climb.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2074/epo03_zpsc1ddc7fe.jpg

It got more exciting towards the end, but the hills were flat enough for me to counter them easily. 4% is not enough to shake me today!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2074/epo05_zps8f91e705.jpg

L. L. Sanchez was strong enough to take the victory of the day, though. Strangely enough there was no gap given, so by finishing 3rd I remain in the leader's jersey!

Tour de Pologne - Stage 6
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2074/epo07_zps9191dfa3.jpg

The task is real easy now: survive one more day of hills and I win the Tour of Poland! Come on!

Profile
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2074/epo08_zps83022e47.jpg
The profile of today's race looks like yesterday's, but it's much tougher. The hills are way steeper and follow each other much more quickly. I dreaded this stage for a long time, but now we're here. I've got 10 seconds to defend!

We didn't expect the race to be opened so soon. Already at the start, some semi-favorites started making the race. It was war from the first minute!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2074/epo09_zps6ee66fae.jpg

Our team got squashed, completely. With 20 kilometers left, I was the only one left standing. And then... I had to let go. These hills are too steep and too long for me to survive.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2074/epo10_zps85a76daf.jpg

Jan Bakelants went on to win the stage.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2074/epo11_zpscb873d15.jpg

I tried to contain the damage but it was way too late. I lost more than 5 minutes in the end. Game over.

Having lost the leader's jersey, there was only one thing left to do: try and win the final stage. The Points Jersey was already mine - bar accidents.

Our team is tired. Let's just hope we can put in one more effort and try to win today's stage!

We were unable to roll up the breakaway group in time, so I couldn't sprint for the win today.

Oh well. I have trained hard for this, and of course I'm disappointed. But looking at the crucial stage, I can't be mad or anything. Those punchers were just out of my league. I didn't lose because of having a bad day or bad luck, it just wasn't for me. It's easier to accept that.

I go home with two stage wins and the points jersey. I still love Poland!
Now I will prepare for the Eneco Tour, I'll be happy to return there. The last time I participated, I managed to get into multiple breakaways, but that was in my Topsport Vlaanderen days.
This year, I have a little more ambition!

See you there,
Matt

Jakstar22
Still a great result for Matt and GreenEdge!! Good luck in the Eneco Tour

Shonak
No worries, show there's still lot of growth ahead of him to be competitive in such stages. After second place at AGR I maybe thought it'd be further but he's still young. Smile Still got another points jersey for his collection though. Wink

Eneco Tour will be blown away by Matt. Smile

Easier said than done, defending that jersey. Bit unlucky there Frown

Matthias was Outstanding in Poland Grin

Pity he didn't get the Overall win though, but at least he brought home the Points jersey Smile

Ian Butler
Jakstar22 - Thanks! It was a good race Smile

Shonak - That GC will be a dream, though. Maybe in the coming years he can evolve a bit more towards that Smile Eneco tour with a strong field, though...

TimoCycling - Thanks Smile

Selwink - Can't get them all. At least not yet

sutty68 - That's true. Second year in a row, too. The season's not over, too!

Eneco Tour 2015

The Eneco Tour saw one of the strongest fields in years. With Kittel, Cavendish, Sagan, Vanmarcke, Valverde and many more, I knew it would be tough to stand out here. My ambitions? Win a stage.

Spoiler

Unfortunately, I didn't manage to win a stage. I got a 4th place, a 6th place, a 7th place and two 2nd places, both behind Sagan, both on slightly uphill finishes. Although I was quite strong here and finished a nice 4th overall, I'm not at my best right now.

I have high hopes of going to the World Championships this year. The profile is for punchers or even climbers, so I'll dedicate the rest of my season preparing for the World Championship and Il Lombardia, try to work on my climbing skills.

Eneco Tour: In Pictures
i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec02_zpsd0ef3cfd.jpgMost of the time, the weather was good, which made for nice racing

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec03_zps56cf0208.jpgMost sprinters were here, all ready to score

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec04_zpsf7ea52f1.jpgFinishing 2nd after Sagan on an uphill sprint. It wasn't close at all, though!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec05_zps77b4ca1a.jpgStage 6 finished on the Mur de Huy. I launched Simon Yates to the foot of the climb

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec06_zpsdbeeaa6b.jpgAfter my work, that Mur de Huy was the toughest kilometer ever

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec07_zps6c15e0c1.jpgAnother second place behind Sagan. That guy has been in my way too much this year!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec08_zps0225e0f8.jpgFinal stage, final chance to win. Attack!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec09_zpscd3ad3a9.jpgAnd attack!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/IanButlerPCM2075/enec10_zps43179032.jpgBut Dillier stayed out of our reach and even overtook me in the GC.

Now I'll be looking how to work towards the World Championships. The DS wants to avoid the Vuelta since it's too much of a risk at my age, I might empty myself for the WC.
We'll have to see.

Until later,
Matt

4th isn't too bad, also considering the people he beat

sutty68
4th on the Overall is still an outstanding result when you see the strong riders that were around you Smile

VoetsT
All with all, not a bad result in Eneco Smile

Shonak
Hey, Mur de Huy at Eneco Tour. Well that's perfect timing today on all days. 4th is a great result and the gap onto Gilbert is too big to not be happy about 4th. Smile

I skipped ahead a bit to try if the WC bug still existed and it does. So I can't race the WC. I really want to, so I hope someone can help me out here.

The problem is described in this thread.

maxime86 - Very true Smile

sutty68 - Yes indeed. A good result. Too bad the field was so rough.

VoetsT - Thanks!

Shonak - Yeah, I was happy to see Mur de Huy there Grin I was also lucky that I was 4th and not 5th with Costa in the same time Wink
