Slightly cloudy sky awaits the riders for the second stage today.
The undulating terrain in the middle of the stage might prove crucial to drop a few riders like Stannard or some sprinters if ridden hard by their opponents, and the wind is strong as well.
There is no established breakaway until the first intermediate sprint, but four recent attackers just did that early enough to catch the sprinters off-guard.
INT 1: Veilleux Van Poppel Wu
Those three and Pranata in fourth do not enjoy much time at the front as they're reeled in quickly.
Shortly after, Earle attacks alone and does get a nice gap rather easily.
He wins the first KoM sprint with an advantange of more than 3 minutes to the bunch, where Affonso soloes through the banner as second. He does not continue his attack though.
KoM 1: Earle Affonso Haller
The same game for the next two sprints: Earle obviously comes across the line first and Affonso takes the runner-up spot twice, though he was challenged by Knees at the third KoM.
KoM 2: Earle Affonso Avery
KoM 3: Earle Affonso Knees
Earle meanwhile enjoys the ride through the countryside and did not have to fight a lot to maintain the gap so far. It's 4:25 minutes with 60k to go.
Behind, ASDA slowly starts to utilize their helpers to reduce the gap now.
Soon later, Ameriabank, Fletcher-Garneau and BoI help their cause.
The last KoM is uncontested.
KoM 4: Earle Kimmince Avetisyan
ASDA really lays down the hammer on the flat after the KoM, and the field splits!
Caught behind are no significant TTers, but some sprinters didn't make the cut in Westling, Manarelli, Drapac and Awang.
Under the 10k banner, Earle is going sufficiently quick enough to still keep a slight gap, but it's down to less than 50 seconds while the trains start to form behind.
It's Fletcher and Ameriabank fighting for positions with a few sprinters latching on to the trains.
McLay Popov Haller Hochmann Meyer Serebriakov Matthews Rowe
A few metres later, Ameriabank collapses though, and Serebriakov is forced to close the gap to Matthews himself to regain some slipstream.
Rowe has been accompanied by a file of riders behind, namely Fonseca, Haedo, Vingerling and Polivoda.
Haller as the last leadout peels off rather quickly, but at least he distanced all but Meyer, Matthews and Serebriakov up until that point.
Nevertheless, Meyer has to go with about 2k to go.
But could this be only for second place? Earle still leads with enough of a gap to not even see the sprint behind yet! He has more than a minute and is really close to the line already.
The sprinters behind the trio struggle to close the gap and see their chances of bonus seconds getting smaller.
Under the kite, Matthews and Serebriakov still use Meyer's slipstream, although waiting that long means there doesn't seem to be an intention to still catch the Aussie up front.
And indeed Earle takes the win today! A massive performance being alone out front all day, and while this is certainly the fault of the peloton as well, he did great to keep the chase away when the sprint preparation was going on.
The sprint is surprisingly uneventful with Meyer retaining his lead all the way to the line, Serebriakov could only overtake Matthews in the end.
Positions 5 and 6 surprisingly go to leadout men in Haller and Popov ahead of the ASDA duo Brammeier/ Avery. The rest of the sprinters struggled a lot to close the gap to the front and lost too much energy to at least be the best of the rest.
A pretty strange stage in the end, but Stannard keeps yellow as even a 50-second gap for Earle is not enough to claw back the TT losses.
Meyer however started his task of getting into yellow decently with 12 bonus seconds, which put him only 25 seconds back and obviously into green for now as well.
