Act 6: Definitions
Scene 14: Brugges, Part I
The race was pretty good. Tight and twisty around the streets, with the bridges providing the only bumps. The speed was always high with the ladies constantly on the edge of grip. We watched from a variety of locations around the route as we just spent the day relaxing and soaking in the atmosphere of a pro race.
A breakaway was caught with about 2 laps to go, and then a local girl was caught with barely one kilometre left to ride. A bunch sprint ensued and saw Dutch rider Julia Soek win for Giant-Amstel. A nice win for the Dutch team on home turf after a fast and exciting race. Wilco and I decided to go and wander around the team’s area in a square just off the route.
We were going to promote Higher Roads a bit and just chat with the various riders and staff. It was a pleasant early summer day and everyone was quite relaxed. The riders were warming down and recovering but none of the teams were shut off. I wandered off to chat with Topsport Vlaanderen Womens Team and Wilco went somewhere else.
Next thing there is a tap on my shoulder, snapping me out of the conversation. There’s a faint cough as I turn around…
“Hi Karl, remember me?”

@Sutty - They are fun to write
@Jak - Took me a minute to figure out who you meant, but no.
Act 6: Definitions
Scene 15: Brugges, Part II
Have you ever had a moment where there is nothing in the world, except you and thing that has your attention? Where nothing else matters, nothing else exists except the two of you. I think everyone has those moments. The obvious ones being when you kiss that girl you really like, or when you have the courage to take that leap, or when you propose, or when you have that big fight. Basically those landmark moments in relationships. Well my world just collapsed.
I’ve also realised that it’s never just one thing to go wrong, but that bad luck comes in groups. Everything will be fine and happy, then bang comes the first hit. Then another. Then another, and suddenly everything is spiralling out of control. I’ve been here slightly too many times before, and it doesn’t get any easier with experience.
Darkness swirls up out of the ground and envelopes my mind. All thoughts evaporate as my brain goes into overload trying to understand what the fuck is happening. To the people around it must look pretty normal but to me the world is upside down, inside out and backwards. The floor sways and then starts to rise. Or is it me falling down…
“Lucy…”

Act 6: Definitions
Scene 16: Brugges, Part III
That’s three women who’ve knocked me off my feet. Lucy, Hannah and my Mom. And each time it has been for totally different reasons. That and I have to stop meeting Lucy at race events. I thought our last encounter was awkward and tense, apparently I didn’t know what those words meant until now. This silence was excruciatingly bad.
One thought ran through my head… Don’t say Banana Bread, Don’t say Banana Bread… “Banana… Brea…breast”…. Jesus Christ that was even worse! She still had that capacity to turn my brain to mush. She also still looked great, athletic body combined with a bright face and blondeish hair.
“So Karl, I hate to kind of dump this on you, but… um… well… There’s no easy way to say it.” This was unexpected for sure and my mind was no busy running a million different scenarios. Then she does something I hadn’t considered. Slowly she swung a strap around her shoulder… “He’s yours Karl.”
This time I was out for the count.

@ALL - I'm gonna try and get the rest of Act 6 posted before i go away on saturday, shouldn't be hard only a few scenes left. Also again we are deep into the personal story part however stick with it through Act 7 and it will all be worth while!
Act 6: Definitions
Scene 17: Brugges, Part IV
You always hope to maintain dignity as a man. But fainting in front of lots of women because someone showed you a kid kind of blows that up. I guess I’d thought that I’d been through everything life could possibly throw at me, and yet again it found something new. A kid… a son. My son. The thought…. I had no idea, it was all too sudden to comprehend.
I had a son, with my ex-fiancé, who lived in a different country, whilst my current relationship was on the rocks, and I was told the day before a huge business meeting. I swear I must have been Hitler in a previous life to deserve all this crap in my life.
“I have so many questions about this. When? What? Why? Erm… Why didn’t you tell me sooner? How have you coped? Am I a horrible person? Just what the fuck really sums it up Lucy!”
“Why didn’t I tell you? Well let’s examine that shall we? We have a fight and you storm off into the night and disappear for days and days. Then you appear again at my door one night out of the blue and I can’t take it anymore and break us off…”

Act 6: Definitions
Scene 18: Brugges, Part V
“That’s it. I don’t see or hear of you until this weekend Karl. A friend says she saw you meet up with Wilco Kelderman at Schiphol yesterday. That is the first time in about 18 months I heard your name Karl. Why didn’t I tell you? You fucking disappeared for 18months.
No-one knew a thing. I tried Phil, I tried Johan, I tried your Mum and I even tried your old team. Nothing! Not a sight of you for weeks and then months. Then a year passed by and nothing. As far as any of us knew you were dead Karl. I had to live with the thought that it was my fault Karl! For a year I’ve had to live with the idea that I killed you
One week after I broke it off I took the test. One week and I knew I was pregnant with your kid. I’ve spent so long trying to deal with so many conflicting emotions Karl. Thank god for my friends, without them this would have a sorry ending indeed. And suddenly poof! You waltz back into existence and I don’t know what to do!”

@Sutty - But understandable
Act 6: Definitions
Scene 19: Brugges, Part VI
We adjourned to a café around the corner to chat in a bit more privacy. There was a lot to be said between us, and even more to be not said. Both of us had reason to feel aggrieved. She had broken up with me, and then I had run away on her. To be honest Lucy did most of the talking. She told me about how she’d looked for me.
Then about how she’d moved on with her life. After a month or two she had to stop riding. A few more months later she met someone. I tried to push her about the new man but whenever I did she completely switched the subject. She was racing again now that the kid was roughly a year old. I knew that her significant other was also a cyclist, as they had to find longish term support.
Lucy had named him Erik. That hit home hard. She had named him after my Dad, because she felt guilty about my disappearance and wanted, in some way, to make up for it. My son, Erik Garner. This was huge, for the three of us. I’d just spent the last few months ignoring one significant person, and now I had this whole new life to take in.

Act 6: Definitions
Scene 20: The Sixth Finale
Time. Everything we do is against the clock. Whether this is specifically because we are in a rush or late, or whether this it is just because we all die, everything we do is against the clock. Unfortunately for us I had to go to the meeting on Sunday and then fly home that evening. All I wanted to do was stay there with Lucy and learn about my son.
Frankly Sunday was just a blur. I was completely distracted at the meeting and let Wilco and the others take control, just answering when directly questioned. The short flight north was anything but short. Every second took me further from them and it was agony. But that would be nothing compared to the impending conversation with Hannah.
The Arrivals exit at Skavsta is hardly big, but right now it felt so incredibly small. I could see Hannah waiting for me, mock-up sign and all. If the ground had swallowed me whole I doubt I would have complained. Our relationship was hardly stable at the moment and I was about to drop a nuke on it. Nevertheless I walked over to her, and we embraced and shared a long kiss together. I pulled away first and…
“I… I…. I have a kid Hannah.”
“….. oh...”

@jak - Certainly big, and hell need some support
@sutty - After 5months? I'd hope not
@all - Up for SotM again (losing count of how many times that is) and not coming last in it would be great. Also ill do my best to get Act 7 going today, last one without any real racing!
