Really do hope that Karl gets back in to the racing scene soon
But there was no mention on how Hannah got on with the family back in the UK |

@Sutty - Wouldn't worry about it
Act 6: Definitions
Scene 8: Targeted
Once I’d realised this interest in going big time again I upped my training a bunch. Every weekday I would be up before dawn and put in a two hour ride. After finishing up at the office in the afternoon I’d go and do another two hours. Then on top of that I’d fit in an hour of muscle stretches and core exercises. Without racing it’s hard to be sure, but I was feeling almost better than ever before.
At the start of April we were doing an event in Stockholm for the U23 calendar when I got talking to Mads Skarsgard. He had been head of the Swedish National team for 2013, 2014 and 2015. He stopped to aid developing younger talents, and rumour had it he was heading up a new project to start a Swedish pro team.
We chatted and watched some of the U23 guys he had an eye on in their races. I mentioned that I was looking to make a comeback, and just picked out a flicker of his eyebrow. It was a thought that clearly hit a spot in his head. At the end of the weekend he gave me a business card and that we should start a dialogue. Provided I could get hold of a full level racing license.

Act 6: Definitions
Scene 9: Complicated Application
This might sound fairly simple but was a potential minefield of problems. First up I was a convicted doper, meaning national federations would be less willing to have me on books. Secondly I was permanently denied a license by the BCU, which suggests I am not a trustworthy rider or that I was involved in something fairly major.
Then there was the fact I had raced at the World Championships for GB. Only the U23 races but it still raised questions and issues. Finally I had been a two-time National Champion for a different nation. Again not exactly a serious problem but I caused extra pains with application.
Because I couldn’t go through the BCU it meant that I might be forced to do races in lower categories instead of being granted a pro-license straight away. I could do that but it would add at least a four month delay to things which frankly would be a huge waste of my time. Nonetheless I began emailing the SCF to apply for a pro-license from July 2017 onwards.

Act 6: Definitions
Scene 10: Straight Line
Correspondence with the SCF went on for a few more weeks as it meant I had to fill out various forms and register as a member of theirs, and then we had to get stuff from the UCI as well. They took ages to sort themselves out, so it was May before everything was in place! 4th of May 2017 I got a brand new Swedish Racing License.
It did not allow me to begin in July though. Part of the agreement to jump straight to Pro license was that I couldn’t race until the start of a new administrative year, i.e. 1st January 2018. Hardly a major issue though, annoying yes, but manageable. It meant I could firmly focus on Higher Roads and making sure that would be at a point where it didn’t need me a lot. I picked the papers up from the SCF office in Stockholm and was absolutely buzzing when I got home.
“Hannah! I got the license! I can go racing again!”
“About that Karl…”

@Sutty - You have no idea where this Act is going
@Hobbit - It's the mid-Act drama pause
@Jak - Sort of...
Act 6: Definitions
Scene 11: Straight Line, Part II
“I’m worried about you starting racing. Over the last months we’ve been spending less and less time together. You get up before me to go training, then straight to work, more training and I finally get you to myself. But it’s 9-10 in the evening and you’re dead tired from the effort of it all. We havn’t been on a weekend ride in a long time because you are always going off for Higher Roads.
I know that it’s important to you. I understand what it means and why you do it, but it’s becoming all you do Karl. That and training, nothing else stands a chance. I wasn’t worried you’d lose friends because you are making more through your work and rides, but now that we are barely talking… I… I don’t know Karl. I feel like you don’t want me here.
You took me in and at the time it seemed like a genuine act. Now I think you felt pressured or lonely and just wanted some new company for a time, or just a fling with some bird. I don’t want that Karl, I want something real and committed. Or at the least I just want you to take some time for us. If we carry on like this… well…”

Act 6: Definitions
Scene 12: Straight Line, Part III
I had no idea this was coming. It hit me from left field like a train. She was right though. I’d become pretty obsesses with getting back to cycling and it was at the expense of us, it was at the expense of almost everything. But I didn’t think it was that bad, bad enough where Hannah felt alone. Certainly she could take none of the blame, this was all me.
“Well I’ve got to go down to Amsterdam tomorrow for the weekend. I can’t miss this one. We have a meeting with the KNWU to try and set up a similar system to what we have here. As founder and head of the charity I really can’t miss this one. I’m sorry for that. But I promise you, cross my hear and swear to die, that when I get back the whole next week will be about us.
No work, no training, nothing but just the two of us. You can go nuts and book a hotel or something and I’ll go along with it without complaint. I love you Hannah and would never do anything to jeopardize what we have. If you like we can Skype at night while I’m away and you can tell me what you’re planning. Next week, just us I promise. Just let me get this weekend trip done.”

Act 6: Definitions
Scene 13: Straight Line, Part IV
Next she told me not to be clingy and that Skyping was not needed. She did say that the idea of going away together for a week sounded nice, so she would spend the weekend organising that. Meanwhile I was heading to Amsterdam to meet up with Wilco and his lot to meet with the KNWU.
They had heard about the Higher Road events happening in Holland and had looked into what we were doing with the SCF in Sweden. They liked the idea and wanted to set up something similar for the second half of the season. Naturally we jumped at the chance to build such a relationship! The Netherlands was one of cyclings key territories.
The plane landed Friday afternoon and Wilco came to pick me up. I’d stay with him for the weekend as we’d become quite good friends through working together. We decided to go and grab a drink with Lars, Seb and Sabrina that night after work at a local bar to discuss the Sunday meeting. On Saturday we’d go and watch the Womens DNB Canals Race, a criterium style event in Amsterdam.
