Gent – Wevelgem
March 25th, 2014
Gent – Wevelgem: 218.2 kms - Flat – Cobbles

The 218.2 km course from Gent to Wevelgem is generally not very challenging, with one major exception; the Kemmelberg. With steep grades up to nearly 15% and cobbled it may be one of the hardest parts of any race. The route puts the riders over this obstacle twice in a series of small hills with steep inclines.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/GW1.jpg

A small breakaway uses the first and only patch of cobbles, aside from the Kemmelberg, to get clear of the main field. Teams have varying goals here, some for a chance at a win, some to get a rider up the road that can help their leader later, and others just trying to get on television.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/GW2.jpg

After the first trip over the Kemmelberg the damage is clear, only a small group still at the front, and patches of riders in groups behind hoping to catch back up. Most of the favorites were ready and kept at the front able to stay with the first selection.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/GW3.jpg

The second trip over the damage is even more apparent, as Tom Boonen (RSLT) attacks and opens a gap over his remaining challengers. None would be able to follow him and would have to group up to try and chase him down.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/GW4.jpg

With 20km left to go the gap is growing, Boonen has just short of a minute over Orica's Sebastian Langeveld. And there is another 30 seconds back to the chasing group from him.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/GW5.jpg

Only 10kms remain for a change to happen, Boonen still well in front, no longer being chased by Langeveld, but now by the BMC duo of Van Avermaet and Gilbert. Looks to be an all Belgian affair on the podium.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/GW6.jpg

Under 5km left and Gilbert has lost his teammate and still trails Boonen by 35 seconds. Everything looks like smooth sailing from here, as Boonen should improve on his 2nd place finish at E3.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/GW7.jpg

But Gilbert still had something left and puts in a massive burst of energy, quickly closing down the gap and soaring right by Boonen as they go under the 1km kite. Will Boonen be able to respond!?
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/GW8.jpg

Gilbert! With an amazing burst he has managed to catch and overtake Boonen who has to settle with 2nd place again. Van Avermaet rounds out the podium and gets another 3rd place finish. What an exciting finish to this great race!

Just slightly, I would though overall that race was fantastic for us based on our goals.

That was a very fun race, thanks all for watching. The attack from Gilbert was unreal, he closed the gap sooo fast..

Notes: Caught the schedule on the first page up, everything should be properly linked and filled out again.

Ronde van Vlaanderen
April 1st, 2014
Pre-Race Guide

The second Monument of the year, Ronde van Vlaanderen, the Tour of Flanders. Arguably the hardest race riders can face during a season, it is long at just over 260 kilometers, has 15 cobbled sections, and most of those are going uphill. Three times over the Oude Kwaremont, the same climb that decides E3 in just one trip over. Three times also over the Paterberg with its near 15% grade up cobbles and once over the Koppenberg which reaches almost 16% grade on cobbles and is just short of one kilometer long. The route seldom leaves anyone unscathed.

Team Goals

BMC brings everything to the table for this route, both Cancellara and Gilbert, winners at E3 and Gent respectively. Faithful team-mate Greg Van Avermaet who took third at both, as well as a handful of other riders that have been working for the team in those races. We expect to continue our success here, but we certainly have a target on our back, and plenty of other teams, especially Radioshack, will be looking to dethrone us.

Ronde Van Vlaanderen
April 1st, 2014
Brugge – Oudenaarde: 253.9 kms - Flat – Cobbles

The Tour of Flanders, one of the hardest races in the world, with both steep hills and cobbles. The second monument of the year after Milan - San Remo. The three laps featuring the Oude-Kwaremont and Paterberg are designed to decide the race, and they normally do.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV1.jpg

A very large 20 man breakaway gets off the front which will certainly cause for some concern in the peloton. It isn't like a classic to let breakaways loose, but with the size a chance has to be considered.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV2.jpg

Coming off of the first time over the Oude-Kwaremont and Paterberg, the peloton is completely splintered. While many groups would catch back up to this lead group, surely the pain in the legs will make the laps going forward much tougher.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV3.jpg

Immediately following the second trip over the Oude-Kwaremont the attacks start, as Martin Wynants (Blanco) makes a move, he is followed by Sebastian Langeveld (Orica), Tom Boonen (RSLT), Peter Sagan (Cannondale) and Sébastien Turgot (Jean Delatour)
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV4.jpg

They are caught however on the following trip up the Paterberg by a Taylor Phinney led BMC. BMC is the only team still with significant firepower, with Phinney, Burghardt, Van Avermaet, Gilbert and Cancellara all in the lead group.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV5.jpg

Boonen attacks again at the top of the Paterberg! And this time creates a gap all his own, will he be able to solo the rest of the ride this time?
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV6.jpg

BMC has lost some of its punch as Phinney and Burghardt drop off, Philippe Gilbert has taken up the task of chasing Boonen as the rest of the group falls in behind.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV7.jpg

Cancellara leaves his team on the Paterberg and takes up chase of Boonen on his own, will we see a repeat of E3? Or will Boonen finally get his win!
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV8.jpg

It's coming down to the end, but with 10km to go it looks like Spartacus is closing on Boonen, what was a minute is now much less. Do either of them have anything left though after 250km of hard racing!
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV9.jpg

With 5k left this race is already over, Cancellara wasted little time in catching and dropping Boonen, and is all clear to the finish. One has to feel bad for the Belgian as he will be relegated to his third 2nd place finish, all three times behind a BMC rider.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/RVV10.jpg

Victory for Fabian Cancellara at the line as BMC continues to show dominance both in the season and on the cobbles. Will it continue next week at Paris - Roubaix?

Pre-Race Guide

The second major Spanish stage race of the year, the tour is known for its undulating terrain and frequent sharp climbs. This year the route claims to have a flat stage on day 2, however it seems unlikely event that stage should end in a mass sprint. Every other day is hilly, and even the final time-trial isn't very flat.

Team Goals

We won't over do our expectations here, Evans is using this as a race to keep fitness for the upcoming Giro. Sure winning is nice, but we don't want to burn him out. With that we would like to see improved form from Matthias Frank and a good bit of stage hunting from the team in general.

Güeñes – Güeñes: 150.2 kms - Hilly

The very hilly terrain that is fully expected over the course of this race starts off quickly as there are 6 categorized climbs on the profile today. There doesn't seem to be anything that should cause separation from the top riders, but plenty to make for a very small bunch sprint.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/11.jpg

A group of four gets off the front early, featuring Omega Pharma's team leader Peter Velits. Joining him is Accent Jobs' Kristof Vandewalle, Larry Warbasse of BMC and Yuriy Krivtsov from Jean Delatour.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/12.jpg

Mid race two more try to get off the front, Orica's Simon Clarke and Arthur Vichot from FDJ. They are never able to bridge the gap and struggle through the rest of the race.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/13.jpg

The stronger parts of the breakaway, Velits and Vandewalle decide they need to separate to have a chance, and pair up to make a serious run at going all the way.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/14.jpg

Though it wouldn't work as the peloton sweeps them up late. A long breakaway backfires horribly for OPQS as Velits ends up finishing over three minutes off the pace.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/15.jpg

The race leader though would end up being Cadel Evans who wins the small bunch sprint continuing a magnificent start to the season. Enrico Gasparotto (Astana) and Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha) take 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
April 3rd, 2014 : Stage 2
Güeñes-Vitoria-Gasteiz: 165.7 kms - Flat

The organizers are calling stage 2 flat, probably because it is as close as they could come to flat. However the profile again looks far more favorable to a small bunch sprint though if a sprinter can manage to survive with something left, odds should be good for them.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/21.jpg

The break of the is five riders strong, but teams that have sprinters are not about to let anything happen and the breakaway struggles to ever gain more than four minutes lead.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/22.jpg

Also working against the breakaway was BMC who constantly pushed the tempo on all of the climbs, with no sprinter of their own they tried to toughen the race too much for any other sprinter to survive.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/23.jpg

Robert Kiserlovski launches a late attack hoping to maybe steal a win for his RadioShack team. But the other teams would take no part in letting him spoil this finish.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/24.jpg

Michal Kwiatkowski (OPQS) would take the win, ahead of Gasparotto (Astana) who with consecutive 2nd places takes the overall lead, and Elia Favilli (Lampre) finished third. Previous leader, Cadel Evans took 6th on the stage. A wreck earlier in the race ended the tour for Maxime Monfort (OPQS) and Sam Bewley (Orica).

Yea, he is still riding spectacularly in the early season. Which is good because his season basically ends after the Giro.

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
April 4th, 2014 : Stage 3
Vitoria-Gasteiz – Eibar-Arrate: 165.7 kms - Hilly

In continued confusion this is classified as hilly, though no one I know would call the climb of Alto de Arrate anything but a mountain. Consistent grades of 10% or more will decide this race.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/31.jpg

Again a five man break would take lead over the race, and would be given a decent bit of cushion up to seven minutes at one point in the race before the peloton started to chase it down.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/32.jpg

Having a bit of a lead, Gregory Brenes decides to go it alone, pulling away from the rest of the breakaway in hopes of reaching the base of Arrate with enough time to stay away.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/33.jpg

However with the climbing skills of Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha) there be no staying away, or even keeping up as Purito simply rides away on the steeper parts of the climb.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/PV/34.jpg

A great climb from one of the world's very best going up the incredibly steep, Rodríguez takes the win. Jelle Vanendert takes second ahead of Chris Froome and Cadel Evans. Wiggins rounds out the top 5 and only riders within a minute of Rodríguez.
