Tirreno – Adriatico
March 13th, 2014 : Stage 7
Alba Adriatica – San Benedetto del Tronto: 15.7 kms - Flat (ITT)

A very flat time-trial ends the race, and at only 15.7km it seems highly unlikely that anyone will be able to pull back over a minute on race leader Cadel Evans. Perhaps though some of the other riders might be competing for a podium or a stage win.

The early time would be set by RadioShacks Jesse Sergent who also wears the New Zealand time-trial champion jersey.

Australian Champion Michael Rodgers of Saxo-Tinkoff would set the new mark and finish 3rd on the stage.

Fabian Cancellara, the Swiss National Champion, would take second on the stage, and has certainly seemed like a great signing so far for BMC as he was a tremendous helper to Evans in this race.

The stage winner would be Sky's Bradley Wiggins. The question would be how much time would he get over Evans, though no one would expect him to get enough to take the lead.

Cadel Evans would come in with a time 34 seconds behind Wiggins, and good enough for 13th on the stage. He wins Tirreno - Adriatico by 1'30" over Wiggins. Rodríguez (Katusha) finished third overall 2'20" back.

Pre-Race Guide

BMC is probably considered more of a classics team this year than ever with Cancellara and Gilbert anchoring the team. So to take the first monument of the season would be a big boost. Gilbert comes back as the defending champion, but there are question as to whether he or Cancellara should be the leader of the team this year, along with Sprinters Alexander Kristoff and Daniel Oss.

Team Goals

Winning has become the only goal this year. A remarkably hot start for the team everywhere has made this the expectation not just a hopeful result. Adding to that pressure is the returning winner Gilbert, and a very strong team. We have 4 options for this race. The first being Gilbert likely to attack the Poggio as he did last year. If he is not feeling good, the same attack could come from Cancellara. Behind that is our two best sprinters, Kristoff ready if the race doesn't put too much pressure on him, while Oss is likely better if the pace up the hills is too much.

Milan – San Remo: 299.3 kms - Flat

The first monument of the season, and the longest race of the season. The final climbs of Cipressa and Poggio give the punchers a chance with a strong attack as last year Philippe Gilbert made his move over the Poggio and survived to the finish.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/MSR1.jpg

A four man breakaway has a very long day in front of them, but two very strong riders in Fuglsang (Astana) and Betancur (AG2R), that could put a scare into the peloton if they let them get to the Cipressa and Poggio with any sort of lead.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/MSR2.jpg

The first major attack of the race comes at the very start of the Cipressa as Sep Vanmarke (Blanco) makes a move, followed by Nick Neyuns (Vacansoleil) and Alessandro Ballan (RSLT). The peloton wouldn't let them get far away though.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/MSR3.jpg

Next would be the blistering attack of last year's winner Philippe Gilbert just before the Poggio! He hit them hard, the peloton struggles to react, could they be letting the Belgian get them two straight years on the same move?!
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/MSR4.jpg

Gilbert (Center) is swept up at the start of the sprint, no distinguished sprint trains are ready though, and several riders try and go for it from long distance including Luis Léon Sánchez (Blanco) and Fabian Cancellara.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Classics/MSR5.jpg

But this would be for the sprinters, as Matt Goss (Orica) takes the win ahead of John Degenkolb (Sky) and Roberto Ferrari (Lampe). More sprinters right behind as Cavendish (OPQS), and Nizzolo (Garmin) round out the top 5.

Notes: I ran M-SR on Twitch, and seemed to be able to get the feed in a solid stream without much lag. The resolution isn't great, but still watchable. So will look to do more twitch streams on future events.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
March 19th-25th, 2014
Pre-Race Guide

The first of a pair of early season Spanish Stage races, this years Catalunya features four mountain stages, and three sprint stages leaving very little room for much freedom. Unlike most Spanish climbs, none of the major climbs here feature the extreme grades often found in the Vuelta, but rather are longer and more controlled like the climbs found in the Alps.

Team Goals

After a rough day at Milan - San Remo, the team will be looking for a good rebound, however it is unlikely to find it in Spain. As with last year, the Spanish races just are not a priority and are more about survival and getting riders into form. We would like to see a great finish from our team, no doubt, but there really are not any expectations going into this race.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
March 19th, 2014
Amposta – La Mussara: 156.6 kms - Mountain

Stage one doesn't hold any punches as the course quickly heads into the foothills before finishing at the top. The climbers will have to work to stay near the front on the climb as there is just over a kilometer of flat that could lead to a sprint amongst the best.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Cat/11.jpg

The breakaway of several riders competes for the numerous KoM points available on the stage, though unless one of them can survive to the top of the final category one climb, it is unlikely they will have the lead in the classification.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Cat/12.jpg

A quiet climb finally is has its rhythm broken by an attack from Ramunas Navardauskus (Garmin). He does well enough to take the KoM points and lead the KoM classification at the end of the stage.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Cat/13.jpg

In the end though Team Sky would show its pure strength as Kiryienka wins the stage, followed by Wiggins and only Tony Gallopin (RSLT) prevents them from holding all three spots as he takes third over Joshua Edmonson.

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
March 20th, 2014 : Stage 2
Tarragona – Tàrrega: 164.5 kms - Flat

The second stage is for the sprinters, maybe. While the profile is fairly flat, the finish is on a long uphill drag, which might put a bit more pain in the legs of the fast guys than they really want for a good mass sprint. I wouldn't expect any sort of chance for time gaps though.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Cat/21.jpg

A small three man breakaway gets out, with Gregory Brenes (BMC) and Bryan Coquard (Jean Delatour). Seeming along for the ride was Mark McNally (Willems).
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Cat/22.jpg

The sprint would get set up as Euskaltel and Movistar take center stage. Euskaltel leading out for Juan José Lobato, and Movistar pulling for Francisco José Ventoso.
i12.photobucket.com/albums/a218/Centaursunder/BMC/2014/Cat/23.jpg

But it would again be the Frenchman to ruin things as Tony Gallopin wins the sprint after sitting on the back of the Euskaltel train. Simone Ponzi (Lampre) takes second ahead ov Ventoso and Lobato respectively.

Steady start in Spain Wink

Probably a really good way to put it, steady. Finishing in the top 10 is probably the overall goal for this race, so steady should hold for that. I'm still concerned that I have little idea of who my best riders are... I feel like Frank, Moinard, Pinotti, Santoromita, and Brenes are all riding about the same right now, and I don't know who I should be using as help.

E3 Prijs Vlaanderen - Harelbeke
Gent - Wevelgem
March 23rd & 25th, 2014
Pre-Race Guide

The core of the classics season starts with E3. And the cobbles are the first task for the classics riders to conquer. E3 features the short but steep Paterburg followed by Oude-Kwaremont. Both are cobbled and could very likely determine the outcome of the race.

The second race is Gent - Wevelgem, with less cobbles than the other races, but a section including the Kemmelberg is as challenging as any. Expect the two circuits of this to decide the race, or at least bring the selection down only a very few riders.

Team Goals

BMC went out and got Fabian Cancellara just for this purpose, getting wins on the cobbles. So that is the expectation. We also have confidence in Philippe Gilbert to ride well, though depending on who is feeling better GVA could be our best chance in Gent-Wevelgem. We also will get to see our top neo-pro Kenneth Foss in both races which we hope will be his specialty in the future.

Frank is the leader, however he is in horrible form right now. I'm hoping that a few race days fixes that and the later parts of this tour he is clearly the #1.
