Small recap:
I am loving the team's finances. YOU HAVE TO love all that green, still all the money in the bank won't save us if Devendra goes crazy as a result of no contract! 
A good start in the Tour of Korea with a top 10 with Kun. But the guy who won stage 1 must have the craziest name I have ever heard of ... apart from 'Toilet Douche Winterbottom Jones'. |

@ The Rider: The good news is that Devendra is Indian so I hope he is peaceful enough not to massacre all the team. If it comes to that, I'll ask him to focus on the weakest 
It is finally becoming serious for the last two stages of
Stage 9 could well decide the final result:
On this mountainous terrain and facing a weak competition we have a triple goal: beat today’s favorite Eibegger and win the stage; take the lead in KoM classification; get an option for the overall victory. Our team ensures no break could create an important gap before the 1st climb of the day. Muhamad, our 2nd best climber, then attacks and finds himself alone at the front of the race.
Yellow jesey’s and Eibegger’s team mates are doing their best. But their best is not enough as gap is still slowly growing. In the middle of the last climb the gap is 4’ but Eibegger decides to attack. Of course José counters and comes back creating a small chasing group :
Both Eibegger and José attack one after the other but none succeeds to create a real gap. At the summit Muhamad is in the lead but only for 1’. He doesn’t bother about what the favorites are doing and manages his effort the best he could.
Weaker in the downhill and with a team mate at the front, José logically refuses to relay Eibegger.
Eibegger has then no choice but to keep a little bit of strengh to counter José if needed. The pace slows down a bit as demonstrated by the chasing group closing the gap on our duet. But more importantly this allows Muhamad to win the stage!
Before the last stage, GC is so close: Eibbeger is taking the lead but he only got 2’’ on an incredible Chuah Kit who took crazy risks in the final descent in the hope to save his jersey, 19’’ on Jorgensen who will have a real shoot at it tomorrow, 24’’ on Muhamad who is getting an unexpected come back and 37’’ on José who is ranking only 5th with 1 day to go.

It is thus the 10th and last stage and its punchers’ arrival that will decide everything.
During the morning meeting I ask the team to ensure the pack is group before the last climb and José to attack from the start of the climb. He is the favorite and there is no reason to wait.
The plan is working perfectly and when José accelerates, his team mates stop their efforts, creating a small gap
Gap that will never be filled in. Soon enough Eibegger gives up and focuses on the 2nd place.
Muhamad is suffering but less than Chuah Kit who have not digested the loss of his jersey for only 2’’.

- Good morning Jonathan. Please take a seat. You want to discuss about something, don’t you?
- Of course, the fucking interview Shushemoin gave, obviously!
- Yes, obviously.
- Don’t tell me you don’t know about it?
- Well as a matter of fact I am not, but I am sure you will inform me very soon.
Jonathan finally takes his breath, calms down and seats down.
« Alexandre gave an interview to a Kazakh newspaper, I thought you knew.
- I didn’t: he didn’t tell me about it and I seldom read Kazakh newspapers. I guess it is Miss Zhang who told you before informing me, right?
Another embarrassed silence.
« So as here you are, maybe could you explain me what it is about?
- After the Tour de Taiwan. He said 2nd was not necessarily his place because I was protected by the team when he had to work all day long to secure my win. And when the interviewer asked him if he would have beaten me, he said that we will never know but that he felt at least as strong as me.
- Well, at least he didn’t say he would have crushed you.
Looking at Jonathan’s red face, it wasn’t the answer he was expecting. I have never seen Jonathan like this before!
« Jonathan, let’s be serious! We both know you are much stronger than Alexandre. How could you feel challenged because he got a 2nd place in a race with no real competition? You got 4 stage wins, Points classification and overall win. He did not win anything did he? I would rather ask if he could have achieved this 2nd place if Gang didn’t fall.
Jonathan seems a bit more comfortable after my words.
“OK but we can’t let him say such things in public! It is insulting for the whole team!
- Jonathan I am a bit surprised by your reaction: so far you have proved to be calm, mature; but now I have the feeling to face a little boy who has been insulted during a break and is reporting it to his teacher.

- Well don’t worry about Alexandre I am going to take care of him. But for now I would like you to think about your reaction. You should be ignoring such criticism: you will face a lot of riders that will provoke you and the best thing you can do is to stay calm and analyze the best answer to give.
- It is completely different coach: Alexandre is my team mate!
- And do you have any concern regarding his attitude on the bike?
- Not so far.
- Good. So let’s act to ensure it will remain this way. The season is not over and you will need Alexandre’s support again, so please don’t go talk to him “man to man” or anything stupid like that. Just don’t tell him about this problem. Let me deal with it.

- Sorry coach, but it is the truth, as soon as the pace accelerates a bit it is either Gang or me that have to do the work. And Gang was competing for KoM and was unable to work most of the time, so I was the only one doing most of the job. I didn't say my team mates are useless, I didn't say anything in front of them, but that is the truth nonetheless.
- OK, there is some progress from your part. And even if Daming and Mohamed did a great job, and even Lance on the flat but we are only 6 in the team so soon comes the time you have to work. Any way that is not the point. The point is what you said in this paper is totally unacceptable. I told you I believed you would do terrible mistakes if you don’t pay attention and here is one. I still got the feeling you are starting to realize and I would like to offer you another chance. But we need to work on a solution that can minimize the damage within the team. Sounds to me like Shushemoin has too big of an ego to be a domestique. There is no doubt he wants to be the leader. Will be interesting to see if he gets that new contract. |

Given José’s fitness and possibly to treat my home sickness, I added to our program
Looking at the competition, it might well be a big mistake: do I really think we have a chance to beat Valverde, Vandevelde, Coppel or Trankink to name only some of them?
The first stage is hilly. Kun give the KoM a shot but even there the competition is too strong. Finally Florencio breaks and no one is chasing. He is a good rider and can be a real threat. MAPFRE LINING has to lead the pack as neither Movistar, Garmin nor RadioShack are doing anything. But our team is so weak that Florencio manages to increase his gap up to 4’.
Finally Movistar takes charge. But too late: Florencio wins the stage and gets a good lead in GC too.

The second stage has been cancelled due to weather conditions. A storm in Spain… José and me have been mocked all day long.
The 3rd stage is an ITT. And despite running early, Zabriskie set a time that no one could beat. Machado finishes 2nd and grabs the 2nd place in GC. José has been our best rider despite his modest 23rd place.

Then comes the big mountain stage:
We quickly get a break with no leader but dangerous riders such as Blanco or De La Fuente. And Ten Dam decides to counter. And once again neither Valverde’s Movistar nor Florencio’s and Vicioso’s Katusha launch the chase. So MAPFRE LINING takes command of the pack. And once again we are too weak to control the gap. And with 30 km to go Ten Dam has joined the break who still has a 4’ lead.
That is the time Movistar and Katusha decide to produce their efforts. Before the last climb, José has already had difficulties to follow while the yellow jersey has been dropped.
At the front Ten Dam still has a good lead, enough for the stage win. But it was close! Because Vandevelde first and Valverde second attacks from the pack. José of course couldn’t follow. He is 12th in GC more than 1’ away from the Top 10.

The 5th stage is hilly but not that difficult so we hope to finally prove something. Unfortunately the break is easily controlled by color=#FF0000]Ten Dam[/color]’s Rabobank. A small group of 30 riders will fight for the win today and Machado is the strongest. The good news is that Tanking was not in the 30 so José is just 20’’ away from the Top 10.

The last stage is a difficult one with an hill arrival. Once the break is cought the leaders are fighting for the GC in the last climb. And Valverde is up to the task

He is with José! And that is not good enough to beat Valverde. Good news for us as José sneeks into the Top 10.

It's good to see that the team is willing to take control over the race even when they are weaker than the favourites teams. 9th place overall is solid but there could have been more of course. The competition was truly unexpected tough.

Mister President,
Before detailing our activity report, we have to inform you about our Legal action started to collect the amount due by MAPFRE China. We hope that our good results will help solving the issue:
2 goals are already met and we are in line with the others except for the 5 victories in China that may be the most difficult one to complete.
Finance is in the red this month because of the sign off bonus granted to our new coach but we remain well above budget for the cumulated 4 months.
For next month we are back in Asia and hope to get some new success very soon.

The trip back to Kunming on the old Russian aircraft have been really stressful. But back I am and happy to share with you our adventures in
Stage 1 – Prologue
Back in Asia we have to target the GC despite some competition: Fothen and McCann could be our most serious challengers. We start with a 9km prologue and a good surprise as Devendra beats the best time by more than 10’’.
Park is the first to beat the time. José is doing great finishing in tight with Devendra. But the favorite assumes his status: Fothen even gets a comfortable lead.

Stage 2 – Hills
The stage final looks relatively easy but a huge wind wight well change everything. The break has built a good margin.
Pengda is representing our team and as he is not our best puncher, he stays quite in the wheels.
Mountain sprints are ferrous and Pengda is grabbing the points he could without burning all of his energy. With 30km to go the break still have a 3’30 lead and there is no more hills to climb. But McCann and Fothen decide to attack. José doesn’t panic and as this team mates to do the job. The gap is reducing and with 10 km to go all the favorites are together. The break still hold 1’30 lead but have hardly any energy left, except for Pengda who is still waiting for the up-hill sprint.
With 1.5 km to go he give it all and manages to pass his breakaway companions. Behind Fothen has attacked with José in his wheel and they are already passing the weaker in the break.
Too late for them as Pengda is winning the stage.
In GC, Fothen keeps the lead for 8’’ on Pengda and 12 on José.

Stage 3 – TTT – 15 km
We are not favorite but so proud in our new shirts!
It didn’t help as we finished 1’08 behind the winners that are Fothen’s NSP. In GC Pengda and José are respectively 4th and 5th but more than 1’ behind the leader.

Stage 4 – Hills
Difficult start and long flat downhill section of 50 plus km. We had a team tactic in place: CL goes in the early break. Then Pengda joins the break, then the team accelerates at the front of the peleton in the hope to get Fothen or McCann in the wrong part of a split. But it doesn’t work and the break remains at the front. I then decide for a new tactic and get Muhamad, our best rider on the flat, to join the break.
But the peloton accelerates and the break is caught in the middle of the flat. The group is much smaller though and if McCann and Fothen are of course still present, their team mates look very tired by the long chase on the flat. Time to play my last card: Kun. He is far enough in GC and good enough puncher to bear our hopes. He breaks free and builds a solid lead.
With 40 km to go the bunch decides it is time to chase.
But Kun has also some reserves left and with 30km to go the gap is over 4’. Besides only NSP is chasing anymore. 10 km and 3’30 the question is now for the GC…
Kun is using his last force to sprint.
But he will fail for 5’’ in GC.

Stage 5 – Hills
With so many riders so well placed in GC we had to try something. Muhamad gets in the break and being down 2’10 in GC he is hoping for the best. Unfortunately De La Cruz is inviting himself at the front and he is down 2’15 in GC… Soon enough only 2 riders remain at the front:
NSP launch the chase a bit late as the 2 men got a 4’ lead with 30 km to go. That is when Muhamad cannot follow…
In the descent Muhamad manages to get back at the front and refuse to relay.
Oddly, De La Cruz slows down. Enough for NSP to close the gap. And before the last climb, José attacks.
So Fothen counters. Kun cannot follow and kisses the GC goodbye.
José wins but Fothen still got a 50’’ lead in GC before the final stage, all flat.

Stage 6 – Flat
We had to try. CL and Muhamad, both 2’ down in GC attacked relentlessly. But it is the pack who prepares the sprint. Until with 8 km to go:
Fair-play? What do you mean? We are putting all our efforts leading the pack or the small group that survived the crash.
It is very hard for Fothen who has managed the race perfectly and will not even be on the podium. He will also lose his green jersey. For MAPFRE LINING it makes it a fabulous race: 3 stage wins with 3 different riders, 1-2 in GC and all the other classification (including Young and Team).
