[PCT] Team Hornbach 2014
tyriion
Hi and welcome in the Team Hornbach HQ for the 2014 season.

Hornbach is a do-it-yourself store with branches throughout middle Europe and the Netherlands. Next to wacky tv commercials this cycling team has to bring more brand recognition. This will be mainly achieved by standing out and being different. (See the jersey)

As we are evolving from 2 seasons Team UPC with a heavy Dutch focus, we will slowly bring in more riders with different nationalities. And above all results are what counts, the 25th place from the PCT standing last season will have to be improved.

Finally the jersey:

Thanks to ANFreeman, sad to see you vanish from the game

Also one of our riders won a national jersey, congratulations Zhupa!

Some history

Starting in the 2012 season, manager tyriion found UPC as main sponsor for a D2 team. (precursor to the new CT) Struggling to get results throughout the season we finished 9th in the overall standings (beating Metinvest!). Next season saw us promote to the PCT.

For the PCT season 2013 we added a new sponsor with Boehringer-Ingelheim to gain more funds and get new riders. Results were again sparse and the season became a struggle against relegation. The team avoided that narrowly on the very last race day and finished on the 25th spot.

Notable historic results
2012
Win Tour of San Juan by Isidro Nozal
1 stage win by JJ Navarro
1 stage win by Iban Iriondo

2013
4 stage wins by Francesco Gavazzi

Added a teaser for goals, don't want to spoil anything to big before the transfer season. But word is that there will be a big name sprinter involved in Team Hornbach.

See you in the trenches!

You already have the train in place so yeah, you just lack the top sprinter. Hope you can improve on last season and get all the ex D2 teams in the Top 15 Smile

Renewals are under way for Team Hornbach. And while the contents of these negotiations are confidential, we can say that some riders haven't had a contract offer.

Kavsek, Berkhout, Hassink, van Leijen, Schwarzmann and JJ Navarro will have to look for employment through free agency. 5 of those names were part of the team in the D2 season, so from the very start of this project. Navarro even took one of our first ever wins that season (and we're still shy of 10 stage wins over 2 seasons) It's sad to see them go, but we need to look forward and we feel these riders would perform better in the CT. As they're relatively unknown however, a transfer might not be possible. We're confident some of them will return with another team in 2014.

Renewals

Renewals at Team Hornbach are done. Word is that every rider left happy. Asked about this manager Tyriion had the following to say: I don't know what riders were happy about, if they were happy at all. Following the tough 2014 season we had to make some hard choices. But like us, our riders are eager to prove they can do better. I guess the hardest part for most was the pink jersey. I can safely say no one rejected an offer due to the color of our kit.

HC races

The calendar part for HC races has been revealed.

"It's nice to know which races we will start in," said tyriion. "We have gained admission into every race we wanted, now we can prepare our transfer season with that in mind. And we will reveal which races are extra targeted by us and our sponsor after the start of the transfer season."

Renewals II

And we can reveal the riders who have resigned. They actually all stayed, except for the 6 who didn't get an initial offer. Wages have been cut significantly however, so we are looking forward to a transfer season where we will target 1 or 2 leaders to add to our existing line-up

Future prospects

Even after the release of JJ Navarro and Schwarzmann Team Hornbach has a big talents department. Groenewegen, D v Poppel and Teunissen are the most talented, but vd Sanden, Schoonbroodt and Zhupa also have bright careers ahead. With de Baat also looking to further improve his skills it's impossible for us to develop all these riders on our own.

Especially Schoonbroodt is looking forward to a year in the PT, as he isn't eligible for Avenir. All other riders listed above would also be very happy with a chance to ride in the PT the next (2?) years with the exception of Zhupa.

Some of those might be able to join my team on a loan deal.
In especially Teunissen could even help my team.

Rider background

While we are a Dutch/German based squad (predominately Dutch) with some Italian riders we have some more exotic riders. JJ Navarro raced with us for 2 years, being the only Spanish rider after Iriondo, Ortega, Nozal and Urtasun left us after 1 year. But as JJ is gone as well, we will dig some more into Eugert Zhupa.

cdn.media.cyclingnews.com/2012/10/29/1/bettiniphoto_0095564_1_full_600.jpg

After signing with a folding team for the 2012 season he had to sit out that year and watch bike racing on the telly. He was very happy to have signed with us for the 2013 season and started with a lot of confidence.

The missed year and broken trust from 2012 left their marks however. He suffered from lack of rhythm and homesickness and wasn't able to race a whole lot of races. Due to this our team doctors have found that his progress has somewhat stalled.

But late in the year he gathered his self confidence. Riding in his home country he won the national championship of Albania. The winter was spent looking for a better home for him and we are confident him and us will have a great 2014 season.

On a training camp our trainers fooled around with some new software and made up some profiles of how Zhupa's abilities could look with certain training regimes. It's all mumbo jumbo to me and it looks kinda arbitrary. They tried to explain it, but the numbers aren't even percentages. So I don't know what to think of it other than that the trainers are certain that Zhupa has huge future potential.

Nice Smile - Cobble and classics are by far the best options imo, but I think I would consider the option of training him differently for each season to receive even better results Smile

These are imo also interesting opportunities for Zhupa Smile

Transfer update

The first hours of the transfer market are behind us, and while records are broken left and right Team Hornbach has had quite a quiet opening.

Mike Teunissen will ride for Volkswagen-Mapei next year, to gain invaluable experience in the ProTour.

Kai Reus has secured a spot at La Vie Claire, who sold Napolitano earlier to Japanese squad Meiji. We wish Kai all the best and hope he can avenge his botched Tour of the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile young Max Walsleben has joined the ranks as a future cobbled prospect. He might not be of the same calibre as Teunissen, but we still feel he has something to add to the squad.

Several other deals are still in the making. A transfer of Elijzen to Gazelle has hit a snag, while Wynants and Lavoine are looking to join our team.

That's it for now.

Transfer update II

We have signed a new rider today. It is 25 year old Bert-Jan Lindeman. We are really excited that he signed with us. He will be invaluable with his cobbled experience and a perfect lieutenant in sprints for Veelers or Trentin.

That's a really good signing for a relatively low price. With a bit of training, he could become really dangerous for the cobbled classics!

Transfer update III

After the signing of Lindeman this morning we can announce several new moves that occured later this day.

Anthony Lavoine was bought from Festina. He's a young sprinter who has a good future ahead of him. He will be invaluable in leading our sprinters this season, especially the young Groenewegen and van Poppel will learn from him. That said, with the influx of top class sprinters this season it isn't expected that he will rack up wins left and right. He's very much an investment in the future.

Maarten Wynants was added to the cobbled line up of the team, after we bought his contract from Puma. Maarten will be our road captain and guide Veelers and Trentin to great deeds.

Max Walsleben who was signed yesterday from free agency has already found a new home. He will ride in the CT for one year with ONCE. We feel he will benefit more from a year in the CT to grow his potential.

That's it for now, but the transfer season is far from over, so stay tuned!

Transfer update IV

Today we signed another new rider from free agency. It's experienced German cobbler Markus Eichler. With this signing our cobbled squad for the 2014 season is probably done.

Veelers and Trentin will be our leaders on bumpy roads, assisted by a full complement of experienced cobblers. Wynants, Lindeman, Eichler, Oelerich, Traksel and Knees will be looking to contain riders like Franzoi and Baugnies to ensure Veelers and Trentin can use their speed on the finishing line.

Although we had originally targeted Franzoi as our leader, we still feel we did well and have a competitive squad for the cobbled races.

I hope Anthony Lavoine will enjoy his stay and bring you some nice results. I would always be interested in taking him back in case you somehow should land a grudge or so Pfft

It's a nice looking team btw. I really like the setup.
