I did some testing and I like it more on the first look. We'll see how the races go in the long-term. Thanks. World Cup Hoogerheide will be the first race with the "new system". Do you also have a suggestion how to avoid that top riders like Pauwels or Albert don't race fully because their strong teammates (like Vantornout or Walsleben) are upfront?
Bpost Bank Trofee – Baal (GP Sven Nys)
Stybar wins on the line against Sven Nys at his home Grand Prix
Startlist: Boom Missing.
Cannondale: Driscoll, Johnson, Visconti.
Temperature: 4°
The fight in his Nys’ hometown went down between 3 guys: Stybar, Albert and Nys himself. Whilst being the most active of the pack, he failed to drop the other two and lacked the necessary punch in the sprint. Stybar crossed the line though just in time to prevent another triumph of Nys at his homecrowd. For the Czech it was his second victory this season, while Nys ranks still at only 2 too.
One could really see what Sven Nys means to his home town when attending the race. Despite the world-elite present at this race, they all were only interested in the guy, they see any way all year long. But it’s simple: If the greatest Cyclo-Cross rider of all time were from my hometown, I’d probably sleep in bed sheets with his face on them.
Be it as it may, the course certainly is something that suited Nys. I had to keep myself aware at all times as there was a constant position-shifting involved. While most others had to get over the bike at some point, Nys rode almost all of it on his bike as far I could tell.
While various riders made a push for it early on and risked wasting their energy in front of Nys’ home crowd, the three men on top put in a race all of their own. I constantly had to keep up with them and was on the worse side of things. For some time, all I did was chasing the peloton since my start was god awful and lost a lot of places already in the first few hundred meters from the start. Definitely not the way you want to start a race. But I took control slowly and managed to hang on.
Once again, I wasn’t much part of the finale, but I rode a strong finish in the last laps and succeeded in overtaking several riders that were previously placed before me. However, the distance I covered and the effort in doing so, didn’t allow me to come higher out on top. A 14th place was eventually everything I had to show for today. A shame considering that I had thought of having perfect legs today, but all I did was to gain back ground on the other riders
Oh, and one last thing: People in Nys hometown sure know how to drink lots of beer.

First time Raphi finished outside the Top 10 in a long while it seems. Also, Nys beaten so closely at his own GP.

It's actually the other way around. He is on a bit of a downwirad spiral as of late and is recently really relieved when he finishes in Top 10. Loenhout, the second previous race with all that snow, was the low point so far on #45.

Oh, they are.
And you'd have thought in principle he'd cope better with the snow than all those lowlanders, being a mountain-main.

Let's hope so sutty
@Dippofix: Haha yeah, definitely.
Calling In Sick
So it turned out that the weather conditions certainly took their toll on me. I think I caught something in Loenhout but I didn’t really cure it out. So now I had a heavy fever and sweat and coughed my lungs out and felt horrible most of the time.
But I didn’t want to call it quits then. I thought about going to the National Championships but ultimately had to decide against it. My main reason was because I wanted to race the World Cup in Rome in front of my home crowd. But I didn’t get healthy enough in time. My mum came to visit me in my alpine village in the mountains and cooked some supper for me. I felt like a six-year old again. Lots of complaining and moaning on my part, major patience from my mom. I felt bad but my mum helped me. For her I’m still her little kid. Then again, I forget that sometimes myself: I am still a 19 year old kid.
I watched of course the Italian Championships and caught a Highlights wheel of the other ones online. Sven Nys triumphed ahead of Pauwels in Belgium, while Alessandro Gambino took the Italian jersey. Lars Van der Haar and Philipp Walsleben prove again that they are without a doubt the two biggest rising stars from their home countries.

My family came to visit me later on too when I was already getting back on my bike and trying to get in form early and well enough for the World Cup in Hoogerheide. They convinced me to come down from the mountains and visit Rome for the race. This was the first time this year I stood at the sidelines of a Cyclo-Cross event like I used to when I was young. I remembered that I travelled for miles with my father just to spend a weekend in the mud. It was a bit emotional but the Italian tivosi and the beer surely brought happiness soon enough. I really wanted to race here and impress the public, but I had to put it on hold for now. Niels Alber took the win. And for me even more on the downside: I dropped out of the overall Top 10 in the World Cup standings because I missed the race. I am still close to them though and I hope I can make enough points in the final race in Hoogerheide to get back my Top 10 ranking.
I’m feeling better now and I’m confident that I am soon at my top again. No more sick. Hopefully. It’s just something you need to deal with when racing in autumn and winter. The conditions are sometimes tougher although you race for only about an hour. You need to prepare yourself for it like for everything. Getting sick… it’s just part of the job here.

World Cup Hoogerheide
Playing with the big boys
Temperature: 4°
The good thing first: I am definitely back after the fever hit me earlier on in January. And truth be told, I feel even better than at the start of the season. I may have learned a lot already on the way but maybe there’s another secret: I’m a saiyan and each time I’m on the floor I just grow stronger. So yeah, deal with it and prepare yourself. ‘Cuz I will be on the floor many times.
In Hoogerheide nothing but rain and lousy temperatures expected us. My dad told me I shouldn’t race. He feared I’d become sick again. I asked him, what’s the reason of becoming a cyclist then when you just stop whenever things get tough for you? I don’t want to be that. I was greeted by some guys nicely at the start, they told me they missed me at the start lines. “No one there to eat our mud…”, one of them jokingly said. I grinned and promised myself to make him eat mud one day.
Hoogerheide started fast as hell. Sven Nys knew that this was his final chance for winning the World Cup, where Niels Albert is currently leading with 25 points. There was no other option than to attack. Rather than sit around on my bike and just try to keep up, I tried to put in some initiative as well but I wasn’t very lucky.
Nys is sort of known as an actual late starter, so this might be one of the reasons why he lost a bit ground and we could catch up again. It’s hardly imagineable, but did Sven Nys maybe get nervous at the prospect of losing the World Cup? I don’ know what to make of that. The greatest Cyclo-Cross rider of this century still gets nervous and may even make rookie mistakes when it’s all up for grabs, when it means all or… second place.
But as a matter of fact, it did happen. Sven Nys put too much power into the first laps and had problems later on. We caught him later on. We? About a ten big group, everybody fighting through the deep mud. Sometimes I couldn’t even get my bike out of it. I was close to kicking it and just abandon the race. But I was up there with the best and I wanted to race this thing for good. I remembered the Top 10 World Cup Classification, which should have been an incentive. But once more the only real reason I kept going was the longing after a shower.
My face was a muddy, kafkaesque painting of despair…
… but I was there again. Up there with the best. I was pushing my handlebars forward when my legs didn’t want to anymore. I was spitting the dirt out of my mouth in order to keep room for my gasping of air. The wheels dug deep like they were preparing for war in a trench. And then I tried my luck.
The guys were there behind, watching mostly Nys and waiting for what he did next. Albert had only his eyes on the World Cup trophy, didn’t care about Hoogerheide itself it seemed. The others were fighting for positions. They were all on the limit, for a moment I felt light as feather though. And I attacked and I was there again and I was aware of my every move. Attacking is more fun than riding behind. Winning should be even more fun than attacking.
If only I’d manage it one of these days.
Kevin Pauwels took the win in the finale meters. I got outsprinted by quite a margin, finishing last in the group. The group of the best Cyclo-Cross racers mind you. Albert comes in second and thus secures his World Cup triumph. Sven Nys pays the price for his early activity and came in only 6th. This means that Kevin Pauwels overtakes him in the classification. Not that Nys probably mind too much. The way he was riding today showed he only cared about the victory. I was inspired back then in the race when I attacked myself. I want to ride like that too one day. Victory, nothing else. I am inspired still.
I’m back now and it’s just in time for the World Championships.

World Championships Louisville 2013, USA
Hey, guys. A quick message for everyone following: I landed in Louisville yesterday and I’m preparing for the World Championship race. I took a few rounds on the course and I think it suits me. It’s fun to be here and I really enjoy myself right now. I’ve never been in Kentucky but it’s a nice place. I had already some interviews with American journalists who couldn’t wait to get that “Italian dude” from the Cannondale Cyclocrossworld Team on their mic.
Knowing that my chances are intact after Hoogerheide, I will ride the best race I can deliver and here’s me hoping for a Top 10 result. I certainly have some quality support. The Italian Cycling Federation really supports us here. Especially a shout-out to the mechanics and… well, you probably won’t believe me when I tell you – but maybe you will?
They have hired Daniele Pontoni to be the coach for the race.
Yes, the Daniele Pontoni. He is one of the best former cyclo cross racers and certainly a bit of an idol for myself, together with all these Belgian legends. The former World Champion and World Cup Winner took over 60 major race victories in his career. On top of that he has been unbelievable eleven times National Champion of Italy. He retired in 2004 but has stayed active in a more management position for Italian cycling.
Obviously such a great rider can you help a lot and he already dropped a few tips and suggestion for me on how I can improve. I have some issues with my stamina I told him and he recommended some training methods to compensate on that.
I have also already seen some of the junior and U23 World Championship races. There is definitely some talent coming up. I could have raced in U23 too but I never considered myself to be a youngster. Then again, I was always racing with the big boys, even when it was just my dad, me and tricycle.
See you there. |
