[Mini] Vuelta a Andalucia - Stage 4
Bikex
Welcome to the second as 'flat' marked stage of the Vuelta a Andalucia. Once again also this stage can't be considered as a pure flat stage it is more a mix between hilly and flat with the last mountain classification only 6 kilometres before the finish.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/bcdf5368-cb9a-41c6-a33f-45e9771028de_zps19a3e29c.png

It all depends on how hard the race will be ridden and if the pure sprinters can hang on and manage to get a good position for the sprint. From the last Mountain classification on it is 6000 metres downhill so we can expect a very fast sprint deciding todays' winner. If the race isn't selective we will see Miche being the top favourite for the win, otherwise we can expect winners that topped the table two days ago!

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04001_zps5c2f087c.jpg

Also today there are a lot of riders trying to get into the break, here we see Clarke (Commonwealth Bank), Mesfin (Standard Bank), Mertens (Dexia) and Yanes (Eroski) with an attempt to get away. Today's spoilspot are Fuji, Miche and Node4-Giordana. At the moment a group of four is even 51 seconds ahead, they are Sampaio (Millenium), two already from previous breaks known faces, Northey (7-Eleven) and Pulido (América Movil), and Leif Hoste (Rucanor).

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04002_zps4e7decd6.jpg

Sampaio is the best rider in the GC of those four with only 54 seconds back in the GC and being 40th. The gap quickly reaches 1'25''

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04003_zpsf8677534.jpg

A group of four, Volik (KazMunayGas), Kimmince (Commonwealth Bank), De Vries (Dexia) and Monese (Standard Bank), bridges up to them and we now have eight 1'13'' in front just before the first intermediate sprint.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04004_zpsc559c5df.jpg

Sampaio wins this ahead of Monese and Kimmince. The time bonification already puts Sampaio in 27th place.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04005_zps3bf0798f.jpg

At the mountain sprint it is clear that the eight riders will stay in front at least for now as the gap is now over three minutes, although it first seemed that the peloton picked up the chasing and wouldn't let them go. Monese wins the KoM ahead of Pulido and Northey who tried to grab the points with a too early attack.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04006_zps3d308ba3.jpg

Monese wins the second intermediate sprint with 90 kilometres to go, Kimmince is second and Sampaio third. The lead is at 4'36'', after it reached 5'12'' before.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04007_zps1f2e67b5.jpg

Northey really wants to reget the mountain jersey, even though there aren't enough points to get today for that. He puts in an attack for the mountain competition, but is again caught just before the line by Sampaio, Kimmince gets third. The lead with 60 kilometres to go is at 3'47''

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04008_zps4282fa24.jpg

With 50 kilometres to go the break still leads the racing with three minutes.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04009_zpsf0e05ee4.jpg

The peloton learned from its mistake yesterday, where the break wasn't caught till the and, and now reduces the gap very early. With 30 kilometres to go the lead is down to 1'20''.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04010_zpsb79e4003.jpg

Also the break members see that their margin has melted away and there is an attack with 26 kilometres to go led by Monese, Sampaio, Kimmince, Northey and Hoste follow.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04011_zps6e9e9672.jpg

But those attacks only delay the catch up and with 19 kilometres to go the last remainders, Kimmince, Hoste, Northey and Pulido, of the break are swallowed by the field.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04012_zps2df3d32e.jpg

The peloton is controlled by the sprinters teams now. The risk of such an early catch up with the break is always a late attack. Will we still see some action, especially with another hill before the finish?

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04013_zps5a806363.jpg

The gradient raises but nothing notably happens and the field is still alltogether except for some unimportant domestiques. Masahiro (Fuji) leads the field through the last mountain sprint ahead of race leader Mazet (SFR), who has placed himself in the front to not be caught in an unexpected split, and Bruno Sancho (Millenium)

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04014_zps0cc2895c.jpg

But when the gradient drops we finally have something interesting to report. Trautmanis of Kalev, who we already saw yesterday being really active, attacks on the downhill.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04015_zps0dd9a3da.jpg

He gets a gap and with 2400 metres to go it looks good for him, being 21 seconds in front, as the following is all downhill. Behind the sprint preparations are chaotic. On the left we see Node4-Giordana with McNally leading out Hawkins. A little bit behind follow Sabatini (Miche) and Rangel (América Móvil). On the right Pierzga has still two leadouts, Huang and Banihammad, on his wheel Aarbia (Standard Bank) and Wippert (Van Merkstijn). Also on this picture Downing (Node4-Giordana), Tleubayev (KazMunayGas), Jules (BNP Paribas) and Bakke (Standard Bank).

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04016_zps45c9dd7e.jpg

Trautmanis crosses the 1 kilometre to go kit with a gap that stayed constant. He seems to have it in the pocket

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04017_zps3e13b3bb.jpg

Behind McNally pulls out a gap between him and his captain, like we have seen in Hiroshima before, and Pierzga has still one leadoutman left. Due to a gradient of -3,5 % it is all pulled apart.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04018_zpseb1774be.jpg

Behind the already mentioned, Rangel and Bakke are coming strong. Sabatini lost some ground. Frazer (Coldeportes) and Murphy (7-Eleven) join the party.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04019_zpsdfcddc43.jpg

Trautmanis wins if he doesn't crash on the last 500 metres. Banihammad pulls Pierzga strongly, only McNally is still in front of them but he is fading massively. Pacheco (iBanesto) is going the strongest at the moment on the right side. Bakke now looses pace and his good position he had due to his downhill abilities, because of his not available sprinting ability. Sabatini is already almost out of sight.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04020_zps5eb8f0de.jpg

What an excelent tactic that the Latvian used, to jump out of the peloton when it is unorganised after the uphill before and some sprinters and leadouts losing the spots at the front.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04021_zps61f5987c.jpg

The fight for second is still open. Banihammad is still in front. Pierzga has just launched his sprint, Tleubayev, Jules and Rangel are coming strong from behind and also Pacheco seems to overtake the others. McNally and Aarbia are falling backwards.

i1309.photobucket.com/albums/s635/Bikex/Reports/mmgandalucia/Andalucia04022_zps87536f15.jpg

Rangel souveranly takes 27 seconds behind second. Behind it is very close: Tleubayev third, Banihammad fourth, Pacheco fifth and Wippert sixth. Jules, Pierzga and Aarbia behind. McNally just can hold on to his 10th place against Pierzga's leadout Huang who apparently fount some left energy and came very strong from behind.
Mazet stays in the lead but Trautmanis has now taken second spot in the same time as Joly. Trautmanis takes points and youth competition at least until tomorrow. The last stage will be very exciting as 68 riders have still a chance to win and are inside 1'17''
