Paris – Nice
March 5th, 2014 : Stage 2
Creteil – Jargeau: 184 kms - Flat
The 1st stage following our opening prologue is a day for the sprinters as the profile is mostly flat. A descent into the finish should make for a quick sprint, but we are also expecting weather in the area which could make things dangerous as well
A tough day for the breakaway as one never really forms and we reach the first sprint point in one large group. Marcel Sieburg (Lotto) accidentally benefits from this, but Taylor Phinney makes a sneaky move and slides himself into 2nd for the points.
Under the 2nd Sprint point we still see a though time for the breakaway as only two riders are out front, and put up a feisty run at the points. Bazayev (Astana) would win over Davide Cimolai (Cannondale).
Like Phinney's stunt under the first intermediate sprint, Andre Greipel (Lotto) senses a chance for a free point and bursts ahead of the field for the bonus.
With their sprinters telling the teams they feel good trains are formed by Lotto, Omega-Pharma, and BMC for their best, Greipel, Cavendish and Phinney respectively. The speeds are going very fast right now.
Arnaud Demare takes the win following Greipel and the Lotto train, and nipping the win by only a small margin. Cavendish would take third, while the BMC train was left disappointed bye the 8th place from Phinney.

As a race note, for those that notice Amador finishing way behind. He suffered a very ill-timed mechanical and was dropped never to be able to catch up to the peloton, with no aspiration for any sort of results at this race, he took a relatively leisurely ride to the finish after we swapped his bike.

Paris – Nice
March 6th, 2014 : Stage 3
Gien – Nevers: 166.8 kms - Flat
The 3rd stage of Paris - Nice is slightly shorter than the previous stage, but also slightly more undulating. The route isn't expected to cause any difficulty though and should still remain a stage for the sprinters.
The first king of the mountain points are available, and the short category four climb decides who wears a polka dot jersey tomorrow. Frenchman Amaël Moinard would lead overt he top ahead of compatriot Alexandre Blain (Jean Delatour), and German Julian Kern (AG2R).
The intermediate sprints would also be spirited with heavy competition, with Blain collecting 6 points, Kern getting 3, Moinard 2, and Muravyev (Astana) getting 1 point.
The day was for the sprinters though as the Manx Missile, Mark Cavendish (OPQS), would get his first win of the season, 2nd would go to his old leadout man Mark Renshaw now on Blanco, and fellow Aussie Jonathan Cantwell (Saxo) would take third.

Tirreno - Adriactico
March 7th-13th, 2014
Pre-Race Guide
The counterpart to the French Paris - Nice, Tirenno - Adriatico offers 7 days of serious competition for the stage racers. While not ranging into the Alps, the course stays difficult, starting on day one as the riders face a grueling test with 7 categorized climbs, immediately going up the category two Passo Prato Ceragola. Stage 3 returns to the climbers as the finish at Monte Cassino. Stages 5 & 6 both offer plenty of elevation changes as well. Of the remaining stages, 2 and 4 should have sprints, and the final stage is a 15.7km time-trial that is very flat and could change the outcome of the race.
BMC Startlist
Leader: Cadel Evans Sprinter: Alexander Kristoff Free: Fabian Cancellara Teammate: Gregory Brenes Teammate: Kenneth Foss Teammate: Marco Pinotti Teammate: Manuel Quinziato Teammate: Ivan Santaromita
Team Goals
With the start Cadel has had so far, winning has certainly become the expected result, not a hopeful result. He will have the support of a strong trio of Italians, veteran skills of Cancellara, Costa Rico native Gregory Brenes and a neo-pro in Kenneth Foss. Kristoff is again going for sprints, and we are certainly hoping to see better results than previous for him on the stages that allow. The final time-trial is a big deal, and we have two national champions on the squad ready to win, and hopefully a leader's jersey on Evans at the end of the day.

Taylor probably about to get a lot less comfortable in the hills coming up, hopefully Tejay and Phillipe get more comfortable.

Paris – Nice
March 7th, 2014 : Stage 4
Vichy – Tours-sur-Meymont: 168.3 kms - Hilly
The fourth stage is where the race for GC truly starts. With three significant climbs in the route, and a fourth awaiting at the finish. The finish line though rests on a flat, and if the punchy sprinters can stay with the leaders they should have a shot at the stage. Though the leaders may have intentions separating themselves from the field as well.
The intermediate sprints are only half contested, as climbers Sørensen (Saxo) and Moinard were never really chasing points. However Romain Feillu (Vacansoleil) and Ángel Vicioso (Katusha) competed fiercely for them.
A unique and very early attack from Diego Ulissi puts him alone between the breakaway and the peloton for most of the stage. I'm sure he planned on bridging the gap, but it never happened and he was eventually taken quickly once caught.
The mountain points were also heavily contested but dominated by the Polkadot jersey of Amaël Moinard, who had to plead with the DS for a chance to defend his jersey as BMC had bigger aspirations on the stage. This move looks to have paid off very nicely.
When Ulissi was reaching the end of his run, BMC's Philippe Gilbert decided it was time for him to strike. Unleashing a brutal attack and gaining quick separation from the field and Ulissi never had a chance to try and take his wheel.
With still 5km left to race though the peloton wasn't going to give up, a strong response Riblon (AG2R), Kiryenka (Sky), Nuyens (Vacansoleil). The field following just behind.
Under the Flamme Rouge Gilbert is pushing everything for the win, with Gasparotto (Astana) closing, just behind them is Edvald Boasson Hagen wearing the yellow jersey for team Sky, and the Stars and Stripes jersey of Gilbert's teammate Tejay Van Garderen.
At the line it is Gilbert, and the following order doesn't change as Gasparotto takes second and Boasson Hagen in third. Van Garderen right behind for 4th with the rest of the remaining field.

Clerical Note, the game did not give any time to Gilbert for his win. I think there is clearly a gap at the finish, and have retroactively awarded him 2 seconds gap. The changes affect his stage time, his overall time, BMC's stage time, and BMC's overall time.

Tirreno – Adriatico
March 7th, 2014 : Stage 1
Pisa – Firenze: 163.6 kms - Hilly
A very challenging stage one, should quickly discover who the contenders and who the pretenders are in this edition of Tirreno - Adriatico. A large climb early could easily put unprepared riders in difficulty and split the field, while a very challenging 3 lap circuit at the end will weed out everyone else.
Gregory Brenes would open off the stage with an attack that no one dared follow. The category two climb could easily finish his day if he over exerted himself trying to get the mountain points.
Trouble for Omega Pharma - Quick Step as their team leader Sylvain Chavanel struggles over the first climb and gets dropped. The entire team plus hitchiker Grega Bole works to bring him back into the front, but concerns have to come about his ability to stay on the remaining climbs.
After taking the first climb he would be joined by Thomas De Gendt (Vacansoleil) and Borut Bozic (Astana). The would punish him on the remaining climbs as he just hoped to hang on. Which he would until the first climb of the circuit.
Sky's Jonathan Tiernan-Locke would get the award for most aggressive rider, as he made a strong mid-race attack and pushed himself into the breakaway before the start of the circuit. Over the first climb he would dominate, and leave the other three riders behind.
Tiernan-Locke would eventually be caught on the descent of the last circuit as Cadel Evans leads an elite group just head of the field. With him is Joaquím Rodríguez (Katusha), Sylvain Chavanel, Tom Slagter (Blanco) and Peter Sagan (Cannondale).
Perhaps playing sly early, Chavanel comes through to take the win over Sagan and Evans. The rest of the field closes down though they can't quite get ahead of the quintet, they luckily don't lose any time.

Really happy with how P-N is going right now. I think I have Tejay and/or Philippe in great position, but a huge time-trial coming up, EBH seems to be in fantastic form.

I am happy with the race from him, little worried about how many riders didn't seem to be too bothered by the pace on the climbs though, could be tough to separate from the field in future races.

Tirreno – Adriatico
March 8th, 2014 : Stage 2
Arezzo – Terni: 185.2 kms - Flat
Stage two gives a gentle reprieve to the riders after the tough first stage, but the profile isn't completely flat, and the sprinters will want a chance so the pace will likely drive up towards the end. There might be a chance for a breakaway with the mid-race climbs possibly throwing the timing of the peloton off.
The 6 man break of the day isn't too interested in the sprints, only Egoi Martínez pushes ahead to ensure he takes the points and the time as he finished with no loss of time yesterday.
The KoM was somewhat more spirited, but still not a heavy burden as it seemed the riders were more intent on just keeping steady and pushing for the chance at a stage win.
Also looking for a chance at a stage win was Fabian Cancellara, who makes his attack with 20km left in the race. The field immediately picks up speed, but there are days where the entire peloton still isn't as fast as Spartacus.
10k left and the Swiss is still out in front with distance on the field. The breakaway has long since been swallowed so only a race between Cancellara and the Field now.
5k left and he still leads, but the peloton is closing in behind, can he hold on for just a little longer? Or will the sprinters get the chance to fight for the win.
Oh he is caught just shortly before the line, the sprint already being opened up by Lampre and Astana. Other sprinters quickly cling to the wheels hoping to get the right draft.
His 2nd win in as many stages, as Peter Sagan (Cannondale) pulls away at the end ahead of Tom Boonen (RSLT) and José Joaquín Rojas (Movistar). BMC double up in 4th and 5th with good efforts from Kristoff, and a surprise from Evans. As he raced for a chance at bonus seconds.

Paris – Nice
March 8th, 2014 : Stage 5
Saint Flour: 38.1 kms - Flat (ITT)
The Saint Flour ITT could be the biggest chance for riders to make a difference in the race. While listed as flat, there are 3 inclines along the route, including an uphill finish that will test tired legs and could change the race.
Starting in reverse order based on the GC, the first of the stage contenders is BMC's Taylor Phinney. The world champion doesn't disappoint as he sets the benchmark at each time check and puts over a minute on the previous best time. Clocking in at 55'28".
The rest of the best were all inside the top 10, and had to wait out the day before hitting the road. Sky's Vasil Kiryienka would start out strong, matching Phinney at the second checkpoint, but would fade some late up the final climb, finishing 8th overall.
The next test to Phinney would come from teammate, and American Champion (Both TT and Road), Tejay Van Garderen, who would blister the time checks and easily move ahead of Phinney with his great ride, finishing with a time of 54'41" an astonishing 47 seconds better.
Right behind Van Garderen would be the Spanish Champion, Luis León Sánchez. He would miss Tejay's marks at the first and second checkpoints, but did close the gap between the two. However his finish lacked the power, and it became clear on the climb he would lose time to the American.
Last on the start gate was race leader Edvald Boasson Hagen, the winner of the stage one prologue in impressive fashion. Unfortunately for the Norweigan his time checks saw him competing for a place against Phinney and not Van Garderen. And the look on his face at the finish, he knew the jersey was no longer his. In the end the biggest rival to Van Garderen would be Belgian teammate Philippe Gilbert who would finish only 30" off the pace.
