Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 16: Renovation, Part VI
Neither of us stopped smiling all the way back to the flat. For the first time in a long time I had fun on a bike. For the first time in a long time the future was bright. Still early to say I was back to cycling but I already wanted to go out again and do more. But now I am intoxicated by the promise of the evening. Hannah unlocks and opens the door…
“Hi Hannah”… In the middle of the room stands a guy clutching a bouquet of roses and a bunch of balloons. I’m confused and hesitate in the doorway, but Hannah’s face lights up and she bounds forwards wrapping her arms around him and planting a kiss on his lips.
“Oh my god! When did you get back, why didn’t you call me, how did you organise this… ?!!” She almost melts into a bubbly mess of enthusiasm at the sight of him, all thoughts of me or anything else evaporating out the top her head. They embrace again and turn towards the kitchen, glinting in candle light and reflecting off a set of wine glasses.
I let the front door swing closed and turn away…

Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 17: Better Than Expected
I don’t begrudge Hannah much, just a little bit. So she has a boyfriend who had been away for 5 months for business setting up a new branch of his company in Cape Town. He was supposed to be coming back in late March/early April but had wrangled things around to be back as a surprise on Valentine’s Day.
My only complaint is that she didn’t mention it but equally it was a subject I never asked about. Was I upset? Yeah I guess. But I wasn’t going to let it get to me that much, which is why I headed into town to hit some of the bars. Valentine’s Day meant there were plenty of eligible ladies out so finding somewhere to “crash” wasn’t overly tough.
The day after I called first before heading round to gather my stuff. I had recovered enough to be ok with moving onwards and would spend some nights at a hotel while I sourced a flat of my own in the region. Hannah was happy to help me search and I accepted. She had saved my life and given me so much more, and I will take anything she has left to give.

Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 18: New Digs
I think for the first time in my life I am completely free about where to live. Before I had school, then Node4 and then Motorola (Bristol, Stoke, Chicago) but now I have no ties or guidance. Hannah lives here down south in Spain and it’s a nice area with some good weather and good cycling and it’s cheap. On the flip side though I will always associate with my lowest moment and getting far away to make a fresh start appeals.
I’m not ready to go back to my Family so Sweden and that area are out. I can’t go the UK because i’m not allowed to race there. The US doesn’t really work and other places like Oz are too far away. I’m looking at Faro in Portugal, Roubaix/Lille in France, and a few other places associated with good cycling.
Probably the biggest limiting factor is cost. I havn’t worked since June and while I had a solid wage at Motorola I havn’t got much left over now. I’ll stay here in the hotel for now and hope I can find something soon.

Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 19: Normality
The final decision wasn’t a tough one. Despite the few unsavoury memories I had to stay here in Southern Spain. The weather was good, the roads were good and the company was good. Partly it was because I was scared that without Hannah around I would relapse and fall back into a steep depression. Ok so I wasn’t totally clear now but I was coping better because of her help.
I even started actually going to Dr. Aritza’s sessions! He is still a complete idiot but I can get anti-depressants from him. So I kill an hour a week in his office chatting about stuff. I don’t let him into my head if possible but I will talk about events in a factual manner. You could call it trust issues, in fact he probably does, but I’m just not there to open up to a stranger.
Most of my time is taken up with cycling now. The bike itself is old, heavy and rubbish but for just pounding the coast roads it does fine. My fitness is on the up and it does make me happier. I do about 2 hours every day at the moment which is about 50km in distance once the winds slow me down. I am also looking for a simple part time job and have been pestering the local bike shops in the hope something opens up.

@Jak - Thanks, good to know i can keep it up
@Sutty - "At the moment" Do you expect things to go bad soon?
Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 20: An Evening, Part I
The end of spring is really coming up fast now. My daily rides are getting longer in distance, touching 75km on a good day, but staying around 2hours in time. I feel much more comfortable on the bike and starting to get back to a high level of health and fitness. Overall I feel great!
I also have small part-time job at one of the local bike stores. I do a bit of everything there from sales to repairs. Putting my knowledge of bikes to good use is nice and it means I can just about cover my living costs each week. The shop sponsors a couple of local riders and teams up with some of the other shops in the region to host races a couple of times a month.
I’ve been out to a couple of their evening events in one of the larger towns to help with the organising. Watching people race is pretty good fun and I often get pulled in to help as a roadside mechanic. Still, I wish it could be me out there on the road with them but my boss wouldn’t let me. Even down here I am still known as a convicted doper, and it’s going to be a hard to shake label.

@Jak - Certainly on the up!
@Sutty - At least you won't guess the twist
Act 4: Saving Grace
Scene 21: An Evening, Part II
Finally my boss is letting me race! I’ve been asking him non-stop for weeks now and he’s been worn down. It’s only an entry level race and I’m not supposed to win, but it’s something I guess. It will be an evening Crit of about 20km in the nearby big town against mid-level recreational club riders.
My first race in almost a year and I’m so excited. It would be an easy win under normal circumstances as I do way more riding than the people I’m up against, but my bike sucks and I’m not supposed to win. I’m not a local and I have a history and I represent a sponsor of the event. It’s all set up to give them something fun to do and win so they can boast about it on their social rides. I’m really intruding here.
Anyway so the big night rolls around. I’m there early in the day to help set up the course for a few hours, and it allows me to look at it in more detail before the other riders start turning up. The first few events of the evening are junior races for kids and teenagers, for which I roadside mechanic. Unfortunately it means I don’t get a chance to warm up before my race and I can feel my muscles tensing as I take place on the start line.
