Yeah it is a shame for him and a bad way to start his season, but in the sprints he was only destined for 4th, 5th and 6th places at the best  |

Town Down Under - Stage 1 Preview

Despite some safety concerns about a bushfire earlier last week, the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under begins with a 135-kilometre stage from Nurioopta to Angaston. With Menglers Hill lying just 15 kilometres out from the finishing line, Marcel Kittel and Andre Greipel are not expected to participate in the bunch sprint predicted.
However, while Menglers Hill may be 2.5 kilometres in length at an average of almost seven percent, in my opinion, it would not be infeasible for Greipel or Kittel to survive should the peloton give them even half a chance. Oddly, it may be in the best interests of some of the General Classification contenders to allow the bulkier sprinters to survive, lest the stage becomes an opportunity for Simon Gerrans to snatch an early advantage.

One cannot discount the outside possibility of a late breakaway stealing the stage victory, with the finale 15 kilometres of the stage arguably quite similar in nature to that of Stage Two of the 2013 Tour de France. Any hint of hesitation or disorganisation could theoretically see a determined and organised group escape all the way to the line.
Regardless of how the stage finishes, the pressure will be on Orica – GreenEDGE to control the race for overall race favourite Gerrans. Unless Orica – GreenEDGE can manage to insert a rider in to the breakaway of the day, the Australian outfit will be in for a hard day in the saddle. This may dent their chances of claiming the stage victory, with the other teams around them able to remain slightly fresher.
Favourites, Outsiders and a Joker

With a bunch sprint anticipated, regardless of whether the peloton sheds a few cyclists over Menglers Hill, Stage One is expected to be claimed by one of the sprinters. Unsurprisingly, there are strong expectations swirling around UniSA sprinter Caleb Ewan, with the young Australian firming up as a bookmaker’s favourite even before his impressive display at Sunday’s People’s Choice Classic.
Should one, or both, of Marcel Kittel and Andre Greipel survive Menglers Hill to contest the stage’s finale, it is difficult to see anyone thwarting either of the Germans. The Lotto-Belisol lead out showed itself to be in superb working order at the People’s Choice Classic. While Marcel Kittel proved that he is not dependent on his Giant – Shimano sprint train to claim victory.
If both German powerhouses fail to survive Menglers Hill, or misjudge the approach to the finishing line, Elia Viviani of Team Cannondale has the talent to swoop in and claim the stage victory. The Italian still lacks the raw power to consistently defeat Mark Cavendish, Kittel and Greipel, however, along with Nacer Bouhanni, he is arguably one of cycling’s best sprinters after the fearsome trio.
Outsiders for the stage victory include: J.J Rojas or J.J Lobato of Movistar, Matthew Goss or Michael Matthews of Orica – GreenEDGE, the erratic Roberto Ferrari of Lampre – Merida, Mark Renshaw or Julian Alaphilippe of Omega Pharma – Quick-Step, the Van Poppels of Trek Factory Racing, and Steele Von Hoff of Garmin – Sharp.
If you are looking for a possible joker among the pack then Kevin Reza of Europcar has shown he can consistently Top 10, or even Top 5, when on form.

Gorilla showed in the past he could survive that hill, Kittel less so.
Ewan could really be the go-to guy, and fellow neo-pro Alaphilippe is a decent bet for a podium as well considering he already was 6th yesterday and shouldn't have a problem being there in the end.
Livestream should be available somewhere, coverage seems to start 1pm AEDST.
Can anyone confirm that that is 3am CET?
