That was horrible, I suggest you move onto Sagan and Dan Martin next, with a short detour to Thor Hushovd...

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 6: Bed of Stone

“Karl? Oh my god it’s you Karl! What are you doing out here?” I recognize that voice. It’s a voice I havn’t heard in quite a long time now. Certainly one I was not thinking I would hear in London, let alone here in London.

“Come on Karl, get up and come get a coffee with me. You look like you need one bro. Just one question first, why are you lying down on the pavement in the rain?”

Fair question I guess. Hardly something a normal person would be doing. But then again I wasn’t normal anymore. Besides this pavement was comfortable and clean, and just next to a pub! What more could a freak want from a piece of pavement.

“Jesus Karl, you look like shit. When did you last have a shower, you’re covered in filth. Yeah, let’s get a coffee then you can have a shower round mine. I’ll lend you some clothes as well.”

“Ok ok… Fine! I’ll come with you Johan.”

The Hobbit
Not one I was thinking I'd hear in London, never mind here in London.
What.?

TheManxMissile
@Sutty - If only this were for the good reasons
@Hobbit - Entirely accidental, honest

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 7: It's All Relative

“There you go Karl! Now you look like a normal person again.” I was standing in Johan’s hotel room. We grabbed a coffee from somewhere then headed back. I used the shower to clean up and was now wearing some borrowed jeans and a shirt. To be honest it did make me feel better.

I hadn’t seen my Cousin in at least a year. Obviously I had been busy racing and living in the US, while he had been equally busy with his growing cycling career. From a slow start with the U23 National team in 2013 he’d worked his way into the Concordia team for 2014 and was now riding with a Danish team sponsored by Coloplast. He was picking up a few wins here and there, mostly in Nordic races.

“Oh before I forget Karl. I found this phone next to you and it was ringing. The number didn’t match a contact and I guess you should look at it”.

He was right, it was not a normal number. But there was a new voicemail, so if fired it up. “Mr. Hammarling. This is Chris Davison from the BCF, and I’m afraid I have some bad news. Following a hearing conducted into your doping case the BCF has taken the decision revoke your BCF racing licence permanently.”

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 8: Twenty

No no no no no no no no… No no no no no no no no no NO NO NO! Fuck! This was it, this is the end of my cycling career. A goddamn permanent ban. AaaaaaaarrrrrRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH! FUCK!

I made some excuse to Johan and left, quickly. The rest of the message explained the reasoning behind the decision and ended with a kind note that they would not be publicly releasing the information. And I thought the 5minutes with Rudy tore my world down. Nope, turns out a voicemail can do even more damage.

So I went back to the one place I had left, Lucy’s. 2 months ago I had it all: National Champion, young star of Britain, solid Leader role in a successful team and an engagement to the most beautiful girl. A grand total of 10minutes of events had robbed me of everything… Everything except the girl, surely I wasn’t about to lose that as well?

Dark days ahead of Karl...

Congrats on the nomination. You owe it to a great writing style and quality reports!

Hope Lucy doesn't turn her back on you as well Sad

@Ian - Cheers. I'm not up to date with A Day in The Life but i'm sure it's equally deserving. And yes, things could be going better
@Sutty - Again, i'm not that obvious

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 9: Lonely

Life was getting tougher by the day. I would spend hours lying either on the couch or in bed just moping and feeling sorry for myself. The mound of empty bottles would shame many an alcoholic. The days just started blurring together into a haze of drunken nothingness.

For the past 4 years cycling had been my whole life. Everything I did was geared towards fitness and improving my ability. Four whole years of dedication to a single goal, all of it wasted. I hadn’t touched a bike in months now; it just sat in a corner gathering dust. I could feel it mocking me in it’s quiet silence.

What was the point anymore… People kept ringing me up, asking for more interviews and the like, and it just kept making me feel worse. Johan had left the country to carry on his season. Lucy was still away racing. Mum had permanently moved back to Stockholm. And I still couldn’t bring myself to seek out Phil or Marcin or anyone.

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 10: Imminent Arrival

Finally Lucy was coming home! I hadn’t seen her since the Nationals as she’d been on a bust set of races across the Continent. We barely even got the time to speak at all, and hadn’t made real contact since my results were published. Mainly it was one text, “I love you!” It wasn’t much but it was all I had left.

What her imminent arrival did do was give me a purpose, even if only for a short time. I spent a solid weekend cleaning out the flat. Several black bags of junk food and bottles were taken out and trashed. I gave the whole place the clean-up it needed: a hoover, a dust , a polish, the whole nine-yards.

I even made it as far as my bike. It was my old one I had from school. Aluminium frame, compact double, frayed saddle and bar tape. The only reason I still had it was because I left it back in Stoke when I move away. I took a few hours to go and grab it just before Nationals. So I set to work giving a fix. By the evening it was back to near perfect condition, minus the paint scrapes and fraying saddle.

Karl will become the bicycle repair man?

Spoiler

TheManxMissile
@Ian - Didn't even have to open the spoiler to know what it was. I'm British i am obligated to know Monty Python off by heart

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 11: Chauffeur

I took a cab to airport to greet her back. The excitement was boiling over in me, getting some odd looks from the driver. I had decided to really go for it, so I was wearing a suit, divers hat, had some flowers and a sign with her name on it. Of course he flight was delayed so I patiently waited by the Arrivals exit.

Out she came. I swear my heart skipped a beat when I saw her. Lucy is just stunning in my eyes. There were a surprising number of paparazzi taking pictures of her but then she was a National champion. Once she saw me we both burst out laughing, I looked like a right idiot but it was fun.

Lucy was very impressed with the state of the flat. “Honestly I expected it to be covered in junk food Karl!” Well she’ll never know it was. She was also very interested in my bike and that I’d taken the time to fix it up. “As you’ve put the effort into fixing it, perhaps you should use it now. I know just the thing to get you back into cycling Karl. Trust me?”
