Karl Hammarling - Scene 25: The Grand Finale

PCM or not, this is still a great read Smile

That's 4.
Well, 3 really, cause mine is virtually dead.
Still, the trendy thing to do to your story.
(Put on cheesy Russian accent)
Covincidence, I tink not...

Anyway, good luck, hope he gets back on track, etc etc etc.

Nice story though, and an interesting approach you have taken. The use of paragraphs is too much for puny minds like mine, but it's a very engaging read Pfft

I hope this continues for a long time.

Is Fabio the one clean rider in the world of PCM stories right now!?

@Hobbit - Well at least this story has been in development (including this turn) since last winter, and Act 2 + 3 have been fleshed out for weeks.
Thanks for reading, and it's not going away until it is 100% finished.

@Cycleman - For now Wink

I know it has, I just find it interesting so many stories are taking the same turn at once, even though they were all pre planned!
(Back to cheesy Russian accent)
Covincydence? Provably...

Cycleman123
I have something pre-planned for my story too, but this is hardly the place to discuss it and it has nothing to do with doping Wink

@All - Ok i'm too excited to wait... Act 3 begins now!

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 1: Despair

They never ask why. Or at least they never care why. Once you are the villain there is no going back. It’s never just a mistake; the act is a deliberate betrayal. Every moment is a conscious decision to fuck with other people. In their heads they have a reason, to win by any means. That opinion is all they have. Anything else and then, perhaps, it is not a simple act of vilification. Suddenly it becomes human, and it is hard to hate a human being.

At no point was I loved by the public. I had some success and I had the sob story. But I was still linked to the bust up with Node4. When I walked away in Munich the impact ranged further than I had ever considered. It was in the news for weeks. And of course the bust up at the Tour, where I publicly defied the team. The new British success team. There was Sky, and then there was Node4. If you were not with them you were against them.

So I became the villain. The pieces were all there and this final act slotted them into position. I now fully realise something about cycling fans, sports fans in general. It is not enough to support a team or a person. You have to actively hate the other side. I am that other side.

I am sure Karl will not let the hatred effect him too much Frown

I see where this story is going Wink

The Hobbit
Is that Bear Grylls?
Very well written piece though, although I'd disagree in some parts, I'd care why.

TheManxMissile
@Sutty - Hope so
@Ian - Like Armstrong? or Sky? And you really don't...
@Hobbit - Not Bear no, just an image i found. Unfortunately you don't exist... in the world... story... thing...

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 2: Inevitable

Rudy at least had the courtesy to call me. It wasn’t a long conversation, there weren’t even many words. We both knew what had to happen next. The BCF emailed him my test results, and he sacked me. I had no complaints about that. And at least he had the courtesy to call me up.

I listened in silence as he spoke. You can imagine what he said, ‘You’ve let the team down. You’ve let yourself down’ and things like that. I was sacked there over the phone. But of course that wasn’t it. The team wouldn’t help pay for my flat, so that was gone. They took all my training gear, because it was team funded. They couldn’t, for legal reasons, fly me back to pick up my stuff.

One phone call, of no more than 5 minutes, and I had lost my world. I was out of a job. I had no home. I had no belongings. My reputation was shredded. Everything I knew, everything I had, had been taken away from me in 5 minutes.

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 3: New Status

The phone constantly rang from the day of the press release. Before I had fairly regular calls from the cycling media trying get an interview. Maybe once a week I would be contacted, and then sometime soon after I would talk and it would be done.

This… This was new. This went beyond anything I’d encountered before. It was not just the UK or US cycling media. Major European publications were on the phone, Sporza, L’Equipe and more. Then it went beyond even the established cycling and sport media. CNN, BBC and Sky were all after my interview.

But it was an onslaught. They never stopped coming. They never stopped asking. Until I spoke it was not going to go away. I had to try and tell my side and show how I was different from the rest. Huh… I guess they all think that at some point. It’s funny really. Now I’m on the level of Ullrich, Simpson, Pantani and Armstrong. All it took was a few small injections.

The World turned upside down in a matter of minutes Sad

TheManxMissile
@Sutty - It certainly did. But there is was always going to be a price to pay...

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 4: The Truth

In the end I chose to go with CyclingNews for the interview. Hardly the biggest or best of media companies, but at least I knew they would post every word I said. So we agreed to meet in a café in London. It was about 20 minutes’ walk from Lucy’s flat, where I was now living. It would only have been 5 on a bike but I didn’t ride anymore.

We sat down, just two of us, and began a long interview. The first questions where the details of my doping. When, where and what?

When: Since June 2014, when I was training for Nationals. Since then I kept going, taking regular doses during my training periods. But never specifically for a race, only as a training boost.

Where: I kept all the stuff in a lock box under my bed. So I did it myself in my bedroom/bathroom. Once I had my own flat I kept it all in cupboard for easier access. But never with a team or a team doctor.

What: This I’m not exactly sure of. My supplier called it A-Tech. It is a new form of Amphetamine mixed with GW5015156. Basically it increases endurance, recovery and numbs certain pain receptors. It means I can train harder, longer and more often which leads to a higher than normal level of fitness. It was the GW1516 that showed up in the blood test this time. A-Tech is untraceable.

I missed some earlier editions and need to catch up on that first. However, I read Scene 1 Despair and that was beautifully written, TMM. Now I only gotta find out what actually happened... Wink

@sutty - One guy in his bedroom is top quality operation Pfft But yes, anything like this is meticulously planned out

Act 3: The Imposter
Scene 5: Wrong Questions

We kept talking about various related things but I was not fully focused. I was just waiting for the Why question. Why did I start doping? What was the underlying reasons? I waited and waited.

I answered questions about the testing procedure. About how I administered it. Where I got the stuff from. We talked about Armstrong, Horner and Kelderman. A few hours went by but the Why never came. That was when I realised what I’d become to them.

No longer was I a cyclist or a person. I was a case, and example… a villain. I wrapped up the interview abruptly and stormed back to Lucy’s in a foul mood. She was away about to start racing so I had the place to myself. Steam was practically pouring from my ears I was that angry. I had to find a way to calm down… Something easy… Something I knew too well…
