Yeah, I agree, Ian. But overall, his TT performance just matches his place in overall classification.

& Gorka Verdugo's ride up to Altopiano del Montasio here as well as his ride up to Col du Galibier.
Since I am losing a bit track of Euskaltel's story progession and the actual gameplay (damn you hangover holiday days!), I try to finish Giro d'Italia tomorrow. So without further adue, let's get down to business. Posting schedule will probably see Tour de Suisse and Criterium du Dauphine in the following days as well as a quick overview of NC. I aim for to start the Tour de France hopefully next Sunday (really enjoyed the 100th edition of le Tour).
Giro d'Italia, May 2013
Stage 19
The only HC-climb of this year’s Giro d’Italia is something truly special. The Passo Stelvio is on the programme, but first the riders will have to cross the Passo Gavia. The stage ends after a long downhill at Val Martello. Cross your fingers for the best. This will be a stage, as tough as they come. Although Nibali is probably the certain winner of this year’s Giro, the podium is far from decided. Scarponi managed to make up quite some time on Wiggins and Hesjedal and now ranks third. Only 30 seconds behind Hesjedal, but already about a minute to Wiggins. The gaps appear still to be quite close and one bad minute could ruin any chances for either of the contenders. Meanwhile, Euskaltel – Euskadi will look to take the mountain jersey for Verdugo for good and have their eyes open for a fourth victory at this Giro. Samuel Sánchez has the 11th rank overall nearly totally secure and can get on taking some risks the good old Samu Sánchez-way. He has much to gain, since a Top 10 is still possible. Although our guys are extremely tired already, we still see no other option than to try everything on the next two days.
It’s a foggy day and there are still some flowers at the step of the Passo Gavia. And yes, you see right. Two Euskaltel riders are trying to catch up to the group. Vrecer paces for Verdugo. The other two are not inclined to do any work. We hope are tactic succeeds as soon as the group gets big enough.
The weather man can’t wait to be the harbinger of bad news. It already snows and we are not even 15 kilometers into the race. As it was expected, the other guys won’t do any work with two Euskaltel riders in the group. But that’s okay. We don’t need them for now.
Spoiler
As Petrov and Voigt join the group, the gap to the peloton is already quite good. But not good enough yet. Verdugo and Vrecer managed to get at least De Marchi to some work for now. Albeit the snow is quite distracting, the peloton can still be seen if you take the risk of looking down.
A gradient of nearly 14 % and every rider feels the pain already.
We take a look at the top. The peloton is 7 minutes behind. Very good.
Spoiler
De Marchi and Verdugo are getting ready to fight it out for the mountain points.
De Marchi is helpless though as he has to see how two times stage winner Verdugo takes his reward for the early attempt.
Wow, that rock standing out to the road. That’s kinda dangerous, don’t you think?
We head into the Passo Stelvio and the two Euskaltel riders see it as necessary to get their plan straight. At least by now, everybody in the group seems inclined to help the break. They have already 10 minutes on the peloton. This should be enough encouragement for even the most unwilling soul to participate. Riders that are included: Voigts, Weening, Colbrelli, Petro, Ruijh, Roy, Devenyns, Failli, De Marchi, Cobo, Slagter and Barguil.
Obvioulsy no points for the peloton to be taken here at the foot of the Passo Stelvio.
There’s a lot of sun coming through so high at the top. And there’s still a long way. 15 kilometers up the Passo Stelvio.
Still 12 kilometers left, and Gorka Izagirre surpises everyone with an attack from far out.
This mountain clearly takes forever to ride, but he’s a beauty along the way.
De Marchi and Verdugo continue their little game of who gets the point. All other riders probably roll their eyes. But there’s no question of who will take the HC.-Category. Verdugo has now a 50 points lead on Nibali in the ranking. The jersey is as good as his.
While Verdugo enjoys his alone-downhilling-time, Izagirre is close to getting to the summit. He isn’t even trying anything, to get away or so. But his gap really increases to the other guys...
Up at the top of Stelvio, Jure Kocjan attacks and on his wheel: Samuel Sánchez. Brace for a wild downhill ride.
Sánchez is quick to take charge of the attack and just berserks down the Passo Stelvio. Kocjan has trouble holding on.
To get a clearer picture of things:
There is exactly one Euskaltel rider left in the peloton and that’s Minguez. Kocjan and Samuel Sánchez are riding to catch up to Gorka Izagirre, while the break up front features two more Euskaltel riders. On the plus side of this move: Samuel reassures me that he has perfect legs today. Let’s make this happen, I think. Obviously the time gap to the first break is too big though for him to get the stage win, but for that, Gorka Verdugo is in the break after all.
Spoiler
Kocjan can’t hold up any longer with Samu, but luckily Gorka Izagirre is already waiting for Samu at the intermediate sprint.
The group heads into Val Martello, while Vrecer drops himself to help later on Samu Sánchez, who has by now 2 minutes to the peloton.
Well, forget all these tactical moves. Sometimes you are just not strong enough, and the opposition is just too strong. Rigoberto Urán makes ready to catch up to Samu, as Gorka Izagirre is near to dropping from his captain’s side.
For the break upfront, it’s still 15 kilometers left. One of them will be the victor of today.
Hesjedal and Uran catch up to Samu.
Look who’s here. Not the guy in pink. But there, up there. Vrecer has so much time on this climb and now Sánchez sees him. Pity it’s just a bit too late, or maybe it’s just at the right time. But when they pass him, well, there was not much chance of him holding up for more than some seconds. He gave a bottle to Samu and that was about it.
About a minute to Gesink. The group works good together while Nibali shows one more time what a beast rider he is.
Verdugo leads the break to the 10 kilometer mark. Gora Gorka, Gora Gorka!
Spoiler
Some of the guys up front are already quite tired. Like Petrov or Voigt. Verdugo has to keep a steady pace and maybe enough guys will drop to make this easy for him. But don’t get too comfortable: Only 3 minutes are left.
There they are. And Samu has now increasingly difficulties to keep the pace of Nibali. Damn it, I shout. Damn it, that’s what Zakur is shouting. Only a whole lot more. And then, suddenly Gesink is next to them and all the hassle was worth noting.
Without anything more than a steady pace, no one in the break can hold on to Verdugo. This is no longer a fight between him and his companions. This is a fight between him and the other Grand Tour contenders. The break has to give everything if one of them is to keep it. No time for petty attacks, no tactical play means no further regrets. Just work together and in this, Verdugo is the strongest.
Dries Devenyns is the only surviving member of the break, next to Verdugo. Our Euskaltel rider just paces and doesn’t even care for the Belgium. It’s only 2.5 kilometers left. If the Belgian is to take the win, then so be it. Verdugo just wants more mountain points. More mountain points, more, moaaar! He is addicted to them by now.
That was it. Devenyns is still standing but already k.o, hanging his head down Verdugo just gets out of the saddle for pure symbolism of resistance. He can held his head high as Wiggins and T.J. Van Garderen are the first to catch up to him.
What a crowded sprint and what kind of riders do we see here at this thing, that is maybe best described as a freaking bunch sprint. Danielson takes over Nibali and Hesjedal and then Pirazzi looks to get even by him.
But no, can you believe? It’s Ivan Basso who takes the stage win for Cannondale. Once on of the best in the world, he struggles throughout the 3 weeks and now richly rewards himself. Ivan freaking, saddle sore Basso! The italian showed all his class and experience in this finish and takes the long-wanted stage win at this Giro d'Italia!
Samuel Sánchez would have saved enough energy to take the win but unfortunately he was trapped in the peloton and couldn`t get out. A total of 45 riders finish this stage at the same time. 45 riders. At least, there was one team that really didn’t take that in account and that was Euskaltel – Euskadi. Maybe we should have brought Lobato or Serebryakov along just for this stage?
There have also been some abandonments of the race. Ruben Garcia is the first Euskaltel – Euskadi rider to not complete the Giro. We are not sure if he will be the last, but there’s only one more stage left and what can happen there, eh?

Dogs of San Sebastian, Part 4
The team took a leap of faith today. They have put in everything they got. Zakur worked out a plan. He described it as a master plan. “It has worked before. It will work today too!” It didn’t work out. Everything ended in a bunch sprint up to Val Martello. Along the way, Euskaltel – Euskadi riders were the losers of the day. Whatever they tried to today, it wasn’t enough. They weren’t up for it. And Zakur exactly knows whom to blame for it. The doors are closed for me but after the 9 poor souls leave one after another the room, I might just feel a sign of a little uproar amidst them. They are pissed and their dismay and anger are obvious, as they head out into the night and talk about a possible way out of this. It’s not about the Giro. It’s about the team.
@welker: Felt about the same way but I guess Val Martello isn't quite steep enough to cause a break of the peloton just by itself, and when the favourites don't really attack much - well, that's the result.
But when the winner is Ivan Basso, it's okay for me anyway.
@The Rider: I actually use resistance limits of 76 to avoid such finishes, but sometimes PCM just triumphs.
Glad you consider them one of the stand-out teams in the Giro. We sure try to make the racing exciting.
@Dippofix: Yeah, and they rode Passo Gavia and freaking Passo Stelvio before the final climb... The bunchsprint looked really odd though.
"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
Forget anything you knew about the past 3 weeks. The road up to Tre Cime di Lavaredo will be nothing but a pure, utterly fought out battle. There won’t be any moment of rest for any rider today and whom who will dare nothing, will gain nothing on such a stage. Vital climbs are presumably Passo Giau, Passo Tre Croci and the road up to Tre Cime. But also the other two climbs can’t be underestimated. It’s a long and tough stage and its last chance for anyone with hopes for a good overall ranking or a stage win, to try it. Tomorrow’s stage in Brescia will belong to the sprinters and Nibali alone.
Yesterday’s stage has truly left a mark on the Euskaltel – Euskadi riders and the ever-attacking, courageous riders are nowhere to be seen in the 13 men break. However, there are enough familiar faces around with Riblon (ALM), Jelle Vanendert (LTB), Diego Rosa (AND), Jan Bakelants (RTL), Sandy Casar (FDJ), Herrada (MOV) and most notably Laurens Ten Dam (BEL) among others.
Passo Costalunga is the first climb of the day and the fans are already gearing up today to push their favourites. Basque flags can be seen amidst the crowd, whilst the Euskaltel riders are safe within the peloton. The break has about 9 minutes already.
So far, so calm. The break is at a safe distance and Astana are not looking to take the win away from them. At least, for now.
After the Passo de San Pellegrino, the break heads into the Passo Giau. The gap sure is comfortable with a lead of 15 minutes, but none of the riders will take this as a sure victory. They know how the break got caught yesterday when it looked like a sure victory for them. The 13 riders have a good harmony going on, although not are able to contribute to the success at the Passo Giau. Some riders are just better climbers than others. One thing is pretty sure though, only a climber is likely to triumph today.
Nibali’s riders are drastically increasing the pace at the Passo Giau and many riders are already dropped. We expected from Astana to take it a bit easier today, but Nibali is not willing to show any remorse it seems.
Urán attacks on the Passo Giau and surprises not only me but surely some other riders in the peloton. His long-range attacks were not really successful though so far, so I doubt that he can take advantage of his fighting spirit today. But alas, one gotta admire his determination to keep attacking.
The gap to Urán gets steadily bigger as Tangert and Gadret lead the peloton up to Passo Giau. Verdugo tried a move earlier to launch Sánchez, but it wasn’t good enough yet.
Who else but Samu Sánchez would dare to attack in this short but vicious downhill passage? Joaquim Rodriguez tires to join the fun up front together with Samu.
Impressive, Urán attack really brought everyone closer together. The Colombian has joined the breakaway and now even attacks immediately again.
A bit later, Samuel Sánchez joins in. And the peloton is close behind him. However Group Urán still a bit ahead
It’s 15 kilometers left and Samu’s downhill attack just wasn’t enough. He is tired, his form isn’t 100% and everybody else just seems that bit stronger than him. He gets caught and rides next to Nibali. They are in the fourth climb of today, but it won’t be the last.
Purito seems to finally have come in form as he is the only one willing, and able, to go with Nibali. Or at least, he tires too. Up front Urán seems to be the only one though who could take the victory from Nibali today.
Samuel Sánchez is beaten. Complete. Forget it. There is no chance left, there is no further motivation. All shouts, all words of encouragement are nothing worth. Three weeks of fighting end here today. There’s just not much to be done, as Samu drops just ahead of the summit from Group T.J. Van Garderen.
We head into Tre Crime and Group Scarponi/Wiggins/Hesjedal is the place to be right now as the podium gets finally decided today. Nibali caught up to Urán upfront and there are surprisingly two more Astana riders in this group of favourites (what a team!), but our eyes will be all on Wiggins, Hesjedal and Scarponi. As a quick reminder: Hesjedal is 23 secons ahead of Scarponi and about 1’30 to Wiggins. Majka meanwhile seems to secure his best young rider jersey for good, as T.J. Van Garderen is in a group behind him.
The final kilometers of this year’s Giro d’Italia. 3.5 left to the finish line and Urán is really eager to take the stage win. However, Nibali is well aware and eager to react to anything.
This ikurrina just waves for Samuel Sánchez up to Tre Cimedi Lavaredo. All the other guys are on the left, he is crushing uphill on the right, trying to find balance. The ikurrina serves as a waving guide, a warning to hold on.
Hesjedal looks set to take his 2nd place overall. He just passes Didi Senf and sees Urán and Nibali up front.
It’s a sea of flags and noise here. Nibali is just too strong and Urán can’t hold on any longer. The Gradient is around 13 %. It hurts.
Urán shows a terrific performance today but it just wasn’t enough to beat Nibali today on the top of Tre Cime. Hesjedal is coming closer too.
Like a Caesar he triumphs over the Giro d’Italia. Once more, Nibali was the strongest and has shown why he is the only deserving to win the Giro. 4 stage wins, the points jersey and of course, Maglia rosa. Everything brightens up pink in Nibali’s world these days. He makes another step to becoming a true Italian cycling legend as he is now only one stage away from winning the Giro d’Italia for the first time.
Meanwhile, a real rider never gives up. Even if he can’t go on anymore. And so, Samu Sánchez sprints for the last meters. For the last time at this year’s Giro d’Italia.

Dogs of San Sebastian, Part 5
I was not allowed into the team car at Stage 20. No one is who isn’t vital to the team’s operation. That means only mechanics and Zakur and the other guy in the two team cars. I am not the only who is dispensable it seems. “We are taking off the focus of the race”, he tells us and shifts the blame to anyone but himself. I have to watch race in some bar in Tre Cime. The place is crowded, and most of the Italians are cheering for their hero, Vincenzo Nibali. Besides the obvious headlines, a little scandal is coming to light on its own. Tensions have grown over the last weeks, and at first I don’t see what is in motion. The Italian commentators are focusing on the strength of Nibali and only when Samuel Sánchez tries his first move with Gorka Verdugo, I see that their ear pieces are hanging down their jerseys. They are not in contact with Zakur. They are ignoring him, riding all on their own.
I can just about imagine how furious Zakur is. How much he is shouting at Samu and Gorka. At anyone that is around him. In the team car. Spectators. Race officials. The poor guy who getting bottles. When Samu has some lead the car is allowed forward and Zakur drives in anger up to Samu. He would have nearly crashed into Samu, he riding like insane. And then, he opened the window and everybody in the bar was quiet as Zakur’s temper swung over and he punched on the door and told Samu, to get off his bike. Now. Now. His punching harder and he’s getting crazy. Samu has nearly nothing left in his bottle. But instead of asking Zakur, he just waits and asks later the guy on the motorbike to fetch him some bottles. Zakur is utterly mad and stops his car then. I don’t see him for the rest of the race, while Samu fights his way up to the second last climb. The crowd is confused, the commentators are. I know what’s going on. It’s a mutiny.
That night, we didn’t gain anything. We didn’t have a shot at a stage victory. We were not interested in that. It was about team spirit. The second team manager called the guys in San Sebastian, and told them it couldn’t go on like that. They understood. They were satisfied with the results of the team though. So they just pulled Zakur out of the race. It was only one stage left. Not much would happen. But the spirits of the team were instantly lifted when Zakur departed that night in utter disbelief. He had no energy left after all this screaming, all this rage. He couldn’t accept it but he left. The team was relieved, and I havn’t seen them in such a balance and calmness in the last 3 weeks.
Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the comments, especially since I know that this was GC-wise definitely quite a dull Giro d'Italia. Expect more excitement at le Tour.
@duxili: We will see what happens with Zakur along the way. A return is possible though.
Catch up on the Interview with Gorka & Ion Izagirre on this page
& Gorka Verdugo's ride up to Altopiano del Montasio here as well as his ride up to Col du Galibier.
Giro d'Italia, May 2013
Stage 21
It’s the last stage of the Giro d’Italia and we will make it a quickie. Promise. 199 kilometers lead the way from Riese Pio X to Brescia. 199 kilometers standing in the way of Nibali, Hesjedal and Scarponi claiming the podium. And 199 kilometers away from Verdugo becoming Giro d’Italia’s King of Mountain.
So there’s a break up front and many riders, who have been quite active during the past 3 weeks, are in it. Puccio, Rabon, Burghardt. These sort of names. No rider from Euskaltel. FDJ, Katusha and Cannondale are at work to lure them back in. The intermediate in Sirminoe is something no one really cares about, and the break just rides through it.
A pretty castle in the back gives tourists something to visit, but the main highlight are the riders today. Oroz gets the bottles for his teammates one last time. The break is soon to be caught. The next 40 kilometers will be a roughly 10 kilometers circuit, and 35 kilometers from the finish, they already cross the finish for the first time.
The final sprint of the day heads into the last 7 kilometers. The green light says go and FDJ and Katusha are hard at work to make this happen. The break is already caught. Tamouridis tries to get the wheel of Demare.
The sprint train is in full motion. Katusha, Cannondale and FDJ look to have the best cards. But there are Swift, Modolo, Van Hummel and Farrar in excellent positions for a win.
Demare finally takes his stage win and does FDJ efforts over the past 3 weeks justice. It was real close though between him and Swift. Congratulations to the winner. I head right from the team car to the podium to see the ceremony.

Final thoughts
A wishful exciting Giro quickly suffered under the dominance by Vincenzo Nibali. While this was obviously a major fest of celebrations for the entire population of Italy and any fan of The Shark too, more neutral cycling fans might have wished for a better competition at times. The final classification speaks for itself, and seldom was a Grand Tour in such a way dominated. However, Hesjedal, Scarponi and Wiggins gave themselves quite a run for the podium and also the surprise performance by Majka, who ended up in the U25 jersey against T.J. Van Garderen, has stirred up quite some excitement and Majka might have shown the first glance of a future Grand Tour contender.

The dominance by Astana in mountains, followed by strong performances of Garmin-Sharp and Team SKY, allowed for quite some break wins though. 7 out of 21 stage wins went to riders of a breakaway, that’s a good split. Surprisingly despite Astana's collective power, guided by an outstandig Nibali, they didn't win the team classification. It instead ended up at Team Sky, who have featured two riders amongst Top 10 (Wiggins, Urán). Garmin-Sharp (Hesjedal, Talansky) and BMC (T.J. Van Garderen, Matthias Frank) were their closest competitors, while Astana only ranks 4th and Euskaltel - Euskadi ranks 6th, mostly thanks to strong breakaway attempts by their riders.
Nibali collected on his own 3 stage wins plus the stage win at the Mountain Time Trial, so there’s no beating him in the points classification. Especially since FDJ’s sprint trains only paid off once, at the last stage. FDJ sure never gave up but it's obvious that their sprinters have not been in the top shape the french team had aspired them to be. FDJ did most of the work for the peloton on flat stages but was only once awarded for it, while Ben Swift, Farrar, Modolo or Felline snatched wins away. Some of these young sprinters have garnered quite some recognition in the peloton in these 3 weeks, and for me it's apparent that our Euskaltel - Euskadi sprinters might have a shot here too in the coming years in case the Tour de France is a too big challenge for them.
Much respect and congratulations to anyone involved in this year's Giro d'Italia, especially the organisation and the riders. A wonderful route saw many scenic pictures along the way, tivosi celebrated their italian riders just as much as any other man in the peloton and although Nibali was quite above the rest by several miles, it was still a great Grand Tour to follow.
For Euskaltel – Euskadi, the Giro remains as a highly successful Grand Tour, but also with the thought of what could have been. 34-year old Gorka Verdugo snatched his first two victories in his entire career in a formidable second week and also claimed the mountain jersey. Without a doubt, the Giro d’Italia 2013 will be something that he will remember fondly. Gorka Izagirre has also enjoyed quite some success, and took his stage r already at stage 3 of this year’s edition. He also enjoyed quite a spell in the mountain jersey. Quite surprisingly: Euskaltel – Euskadi held the mountain jersey for 20 of 21 possible days in the team. Talk about true dominance in the mountains. However, this success didn’t hold up in an overall classification. Samuel Sánchez scored multiple good results and finished on a decent 11th overall, but with a better form, a slightly more helping squad and a more awake mind, he might have had a shot at a place way higher. Despite all the success Euskaltel – Euskadi enjoyed here in Italy, the Giro will remain a sign for Samuel Sánchez that his time might be over, sooner than we had hoped.
Dogs of San Sebastian, Part 6
We had only one team car in the race, so we decided it was best that just everybody sticks around in the peloton. When we crossed the finish line, it was with ease and relief. Three tough weeks were behind us. There would be talk about what happened at the Giro. Not only in our team itself, but also in the media and among the Socios. Is this how they treated their team managers? Or is this how team managers treated their riders at Euskaltel?
We had reason to celebrate. 3 stage victories and the mountain jersey. 11th overall for Samuel Sánchez, 16th for Gorka Verdugo. Many breakaway attempts and much support. We took risks. However, Euskaltel – Euskadi have shown determination and resilience in this race. It paid off. But to me it seems that our success at this Giro d’Italia will always be overshadowed by the inner struggle in the team. Manager against the riders. It was a fight they won for now. But the phones were already ringing when we headed to the hotel. There would be much talk amongst the riders. I wouldn’t get to learn about it though. Internas, you know. But one could imagine what the subject was and what the result was. Zakur would stay on board, but I havn’t seem on the World Tour level for quite some time now.
Overall a succesful Giro, three stage wins were more than any other team bar Astana. And you should focus on signing a few Gorkas ahead of the new season, they definitely are a good addition!
@Dippofix: There are no Gorkas in basque country talent-wise sadly. But I'm sure, the recent success of the name Gorka will force parents to name their children Gorka in the future if they want them to ride for Euskaltel - Euskadi one day. So, let's just wait at least 18 years to have an army of Gorkas at our disposal - and a baby boom would be great too.
@sutty68: Thanks mate. Yeah, it is, but honestly, we didn't really deserve a Top 10 at this Giro with all the tactical mistakes and sleeping we did along the way. I expect him to do way better at the Vuelta, which is his real season highlight, next to Vuelta Pais Vasco. Oh, and Gorka Verdugo will reappear at the Vuelta too.
"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
Maybe it's a good thing: People couldn't handle his awesomeness, throw around allegations and from being a popular team we would end up being the most hated one.
"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
Wow love it Shonak you sure have shown true Orange spirit, love it how agressive you are in the stages always on the attack. Will it be Anton and Nieve to the TDF as a 2 combo in the Mountaians?, will Nieve double up at the Vuelta aswell? or Anton? And what signings are u looking at what about Daniel Moreno, Intauxti are the available?
Who leads the Dauphinee and Suisse? Is any Giro guys taking their rythm to those races.
Bye the way this is one of my fav storys ever i love agressive attacking storys and you have lived up to the bill for sure. This has legendary status written all over it thats without the fact that this is your 1st story, that is just amazing mate.
Thanks a lot mate. It's still a very long way to go though
To your questions: Yes, I try to follow Euskaltel's real life 2013 schedule, when it comes to the captains so Nieve and Antón will both ride le Tour and possibly the Vuelta too. One of them each will lead Crit-Dauph and Tour de Suisse. Samuel Sánchez and Gorka Verdugo won't take benefit of their Giro-form and will rest a bit. Intxausti isn't available unfortunately this year, I'd love to sign him. I am not interested in Daniel Moreno though. More infos concerning transfers will come soon.

"It’s a little bit scary when Contador attacks." - Tommy V
After the Giro d’Italia, the team takes a break from racing and their next race is the Critérium du Dauphiné. The race functions as one of the two important preparation races for the Tour de France, but holds itself quite some prestige too. As a part of the UCI World Tour, many top riders are included here as they look to get in form for le Tour or want to further profit from their Post-Giro form.
Favourites include Christopher Froome, Alberto Contador, Joaquim Rodriguez, Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana. For Euskaltel – Euskadi Mikel Nieve will be riding, alongside Jon Aberasturi, Jorge Azanza, Bravo, Egoi Martínez, Ricardo Mestre, André Schulze and Sáez de Arregi.
Stage 1
The prologue of the Critérium du Dauphiné features relatively flat 7 kilometers with a slight hill in it. The stage sees a double victory for Sweden as Fredrik Kessiakoff takes the stage win for Astana ahead of fellow Swede Tobias Ludvigsson. Luke Durbridge completes the podium. Surprisingly no riders from Euskaltel – Euskadi are featured amongst the Top 25.
Stage 2
This hilly route takes us from Gap to Bollène. Although the route should suit sprinters, the many climbs along the way won’t make it easy for them to hold on in the peloton.
An early break doesn’t feature any riders from Euskaltel – Euskadi. Stortoni, Kump, Irizar, Da Dalto and Mourey are included. Their lead at the first small climb already is up to 5 minutes. Ricard Mestre tried it but the Euskaltel riders are not in competitive shape it seems.
Basically after 190 kilometers, or 20 kilometers ahead of the finish, the peloton has the break in its sight again. The small bump ahead of the finish might be crucial for positioning for a sprint. Nieve will try to keep himself at the front of the peloton, while Schulze and Aberasturi hope to get a decent result.
Europcar are pacing hard with 5 kilometesr left for Coquard. Mourey is the only one of the break still struggling on upfront.
Unbelieveable! Van Poppel gets caught really close by Coquard on the finish line. Once more, a rider gets zabeled here. Second time in this season. Coquard wins this stage for Europcar! Schulze achieves a 7th rank. Supersprinter Marcel Kittel achieves only a 4th rank.

Stage 3
Another stage suitable to sprinters but the finale climb to Vienne might offer another time for a successful breakaway. Maybe a potential stage winner also sees his chance fit to attack here.
Gorikoitz Bravo has managed to get into the break. Several attempts by other riders have failed during a hot star of the stage. The riders he is now have quite some class though. Bravo rides together with Paris – Roubaix winner Niki Terpstra, Nikki Sörensen and Daniel Oss. The gap is about 5 minutes big and there’s still 80 kilometers left. If he wants to have a shot at the stage win today, he will have to make a move at the last climb. For now however, the group works well together.
[center]
Bravo has to pay the price for riding with such rouleurs. They had a high pace during the flat section and now he can’t even keep up at the foot of the climb. True, he is not in top-shape and is certainly the weakest of the four, but we had hoped for a bit more. The peloton is come quite close with 20 kilometers left. Astana are eager to keep the jersey one more day at least.
The break is sprinting for the last mountain points of the day, while Schulze and Aberasturi are trying hard to keep themselves at the front of the peloton. Argos is now pacing for Kittel.
Only about 5 kilometers left and the downhill is certainly not treated easily. Nikki Sörensen is still not willing to give up while his former companions Terpstra and Oss have been caught too by the peloton. Argos are pressing hard, although Kittel is far back in the peloton.
This time around no one is getting zabeld, as Delage takes a clear sprint win home for FDJ. Aberasturi takes 8th.

Stage 4
We left where stopped yesterday, and start in Vienne. From there, we head over a hilly route up to Crêt de Châtillon. The first real mountain offers quite some challenge and should come in handy for the stage racers. Since there is not much time difference yet in general classification, it will be tough for a breakaway survive this day ahead of the potential winners.
It’s going to be a tough final climb but until then, there will be enough room for a breakaway to get a vital gap to the peloton. After once again a quite heated beginning, Tony Gallopin made the successful attack, followed by Egoi Martínez. Other riders soon followed. Koren (CAN), Burghardt (BMC), Westra (VCD), Offredo (FDJ), Durbridge (OGE) and Rabon (OPQ) are all no real climbers and if the form is good enough, only Gallopin and Martínez should have chances for the victory today.
Crossing the steep Col du Chat the peloton split itself already. Two Euskaltel riders are included in it, but Nieve is safe upfront in the peloton. Sky, Belkin and one rider of Katusha and Astana are putting in quite a show by now.
Le Mével attacked after the Col du Chat and just got into the break before the second climb of today, Col de Leschaux. Martínez is preparing himself for the last 50 kilometers. The lead is about 3 minutes, and it’s reducing a bit too fast for my taste.
The last 18 kilometers are up and it’s going to be intense. The break still has 3 minutes ahead and are eager to take the victory. No attacks so far have decimated the group or disrupted the good work they are performing. The peloton meanwhile with riders such as Contador, Froome and Quintana are sure to make up time. The lead still holds at around 3 minutes thanks to the harmony of the breakaway.
Well, it was not meant to last. Why can’t they just appreciate the effort Martínez and Le Mével are doing for them right now? Durbridge and Rabon are trying their luck with an attack but they are not getting anywhere far since Martínez pace is quite remarkable.
Only when Le Mével joins into the their attacks, the group might have a shot of getting away from Martínez now.
Martínez dropped the other guys with a short burst of an attack and is now increasing his pace. Only 8 kilometers left andthis appears to be the steepest part.
Nieve is looking good. Ikurrina’s on the side show that the basque country is anywhere where we go. Sky’s pace by Zandio makes it hard for Purito, Caruso and Andy Schleck to get away.
Martínez is getting caught by Quintana and Purito. When the young Colombian launched his attack, it was too much for the group and many riders are now struggling to hold on. Mollema and Froome just headed out of the peloton in the right time to not miss the split.
Martínez and the ikurrina and 3 riders who are clearly better than him. At the far front, Quintana launched another attack. He’s on fire today.
Quintana and Le Mével lead the race now, while gadret is his first pursuer. Nieve meanwhile got caught up behind in the peloton and has to make up ground now.
A wall of flags at the summit. Purito shows that the Giro was nothing to judge his quality upon and Froome is building closer towards his Tour de France form. Quintana has only 15 seconds left.
A bit later Nieve passes the same spot. He is with Kreuziger and Valverde, so good company I suppose.
Gadret is struggling to hold on to Contador and Mollema, while Froome and Purito just can’t seem to catch Quintana for good.
Contador and Mollema launch their finish, while Purito has dropped Froome significantly and is now close to catching Quintana for good.
Yes, it’s Joaquim Rodriguez’ day as he takes the stage win and celebrates happily. He is still one of the best climbers, despite the disappointing Giro, and he has shown that today. Quintana gets a probably disappointing second place. Purito also takes the leader’s jersey for now.
Nieve has dropped several of the other riders up on the climb in the meantime, but they are now catching up to him again in the sprint. He takes 14th on the stage and moves up to21st overall. His form is definitely improving and he has given us a glimpse of his potential. He had a bit of bad luck, he tells me later after the race, with his position. “I was awake, like during the whole race. And as soon as Quintana attacked, everybody just went by him. I slept for a second and then he just happened, I was caught behind there. Some riders of the breakaway, some pace-makers, some guys who were already struggling… they were all ahead of me and I had to get into motion to even get anywhere close to Valverde and Kreuziger. It wasn’t a good performance.” I reassure him he has just done fine.
