I spent the evening answering my first interviews and congratulation phone calls and text messages. I do like this one in particular:
Following this first win excitement, I then got trouble finding some sleep.
So wake up has been hard and I am 5’ late for the 1-2-1 breakfast I’ve planned with Jonathan. He did not wait for me to start eating. He looks calm and rested. Great! Today will be decisive for GC and he seems ready.
"Goodmoring Jonathan! I couldn’t dream of a better way to start my 1-2-1 interviews! But beyond your first win, I’d like to know what are you feelings after these first weeks in China?
- Hi coach. I am truly delighted. It all happens as in a dream : I got a great house, ideal training conditions for winter and I get along very well with José.
- Isn’t it too hard to go racing without him? Do you think you can deal with Gang’s role and presence?
- Oh yes, I like Gang a lot. He is fun with all his dirty jokes. It sounds a little bit like sexual obsession, doesn’t it?
- Well he certainly likes to talk the talk. But from my experience they are not the ones who walk the walk… Anyway it isn’t today topic. You said you feel great in Kunming. Do you mind learning Mandarin?
- Of course not. I am leaving in China and that is a unique opportunity. I won’t be cycling rider for the rest of my life. I love China and speaking Mandarin could very well prove to be handy some day. Couldn’t it coach?
- You really are a responsible person. Very mature for your age. I am impressed. I mean you are the best rider of this team but you don’t have Alexandre ’ s arrogant attitude!
- Well, he is young. Wait until Contador beats him by 40’ in a 2 days mountain race… The first time, it happened to me I was so shocked!
- By the way Jonathan, I am thinking about the 1 year contract you’ve signed because you feared leaving in China. Now that you know you love it, do you think you we can extend it? It will have such a positive impact on our investors… And for me, it would be a pleasure and an honor to help you progressing.
- Thanks coach, I am not sure I deserve such a confidence but it is nice to hear it. I’ll get in touch with my agent, but on the principle, I am OK.
- Fantastic. One last word on your objectives this season: what would you target after such an amazing start?
- My first goal is to progress in Time Trial and Mountain. Then I’ll have to progress on hills as well but it might not be this year priority, what do you thing coach?
- I am totally in line. Now I let you finish your breakfast and concentrate on this Tour of Wellington! I need you 100% focused today to keep and even consolidate this yellow jersey of yours. Yellow suits you so well."

January 21st, Tour of Wellington
« Hello Everybody,
Here is the end of our New Zeeland adventures:
Stage 2 - Hills
This stage is suiting Jonathan’s skills better rand he is the main favourite. (McCann being his main challenger). Our team controls the race perfectly until the last climb when Jonathan to claim his second consecutive win!
Alexandre’s work is also worth mentioning: not only did he lead the bunch before his leader’s attack but also did he stay with the best to collect a nice 4th place.

The bunch is grouped in the final, when Jonathan decides to attack.
But we should let others win as well and Sulzberger proves to be the strongest sprinter today.

Stage 4 –Hills
Gang is in the break and to claim KoM points. With no dangerous riders at the front, we let them dispute the win. Manam is the strongest despite Gang’s effort to get a 5th place in the sprint.
A bit of a deception though as Gang is ranked second in KoM with same number of points. No surprise in GC with Jonathan’s win and Alexandre’s 5th. As a bonus, Jonathanalso collects the points classification. A fantastic race for the team!

« Hello José, so how are you settling down ?
- Everything is fine coach.
- Are you sure? That is not my feeling: when we were discussing for your recruitment uou told me you feel like playing the role of the « older brother ». I remember you even told me: “I know I’ll never be Contador, but I can still progress and I can certainly help younger riders to avoid mistakes.” But now I see you are spending your days with Jonathan, the only young rider who doesn’t need your help.
I stop talking but José has lowered his eyes and doesn’t seem ready to answer.
- José it is just a question: do you really feel that good in China?
- Yes and no. Honestly China is hard; I don’t get a single word of what they say. I am trying to learn Chinese but it is so difficult… And Gang is actually taking care of the young Chinese riders. There is also Alexandre who doesn’t help complaining all the time. And the rest of the team, they seem as lost as I am. On the other hand, there are so many things I enjoy here: so food for example, it is so good and so cheap. I love training here as well. And our new Look bikes are awesome. And if I spend so much time with Jonathan it is because he is so cool!
- I am glad you like Jonathan but I am really counting on you to help the young. Speaking about Alexandre, we will deal with it. The issue is that he is really good and I will need you to help to keep him in line. The Chinese? I’ll break their group so you’ll get 3 of them in your team. I hope they will help you to accustom to China and you will help them to understand and work as cycling riders. You have several months before you’ll start racing so make use of it!
- I know coach. I’ll do my best. Jonathan is leaving to Malaysia anyway.
- Yes and so do I. Therefore you’ll be the boss here, together with our coach Jiangye. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to call.

January 28th, Tour de Langkawi

My pre race briefing was pushy:
“We had fun in Wellington, but here we are in a HC race not a category 2 one. However we are lucky that competition isn't that strong so there are for successes."
Stage 1 – Flat
Another new shirt for Jonathan thanks to his New Zealand success. One might think he doesn’t like the team jersey!
Lance is in the break to compete for KoM points. However sprinters’s team have done the job. They may also have tired Mohamed who felts pretty hard in the final. Thankfully he manages to finish the stage and will thus not abandon his national race!

Stage 2 - Hills
A crazy stage!
Jonathan is again favourite together with Modolo and Butler.
In the middle of the second climb, Alexandre accelerates to claim KoM points. But the pack isn’t ready to let him go. As the front accelerates leaders are split in many groups. We can see on the picture: Alexandre alone at the front, then riders left from the early break away, then a small yellow jesrsey group where we still can see 3 MAPFRE LINING’s red shirts but no more favourite!
It is the key moment of the race: I ask Alexandre to keep going on the flat so that everyone keeps working behind. Modolo hardly comes ack just before the last climb. But he is tired and no one can follow when Jonathan , who has been well protected so far, makes his move.
All the team has done great today but the key man has clearly been Alexandre. He finished far from the winner but has allowed his leader to pick an easy win and will be rewarded tomorrow with the KoM jersey!

Very classic stage today: breakaway first massive sprint to end. Except that Jonathan breaks free in the final

Stage 4 - Mountain
The stage looks decisive:
Jonathan is once again favourite with Butler and Atapuma.
As stage 3 involuntary tactic worked so well, I decided to use it again today. Alexandre accelerates on the first hard climb and the pack simply exploses once more. We can see on the picture Jonathan catching back early break riders. Butler is behind in Gang’s group; Atapuma further behing together with Lance.
Jonathan will easily take the win while Alexandre manages to resist well to take the 3rd place.

Same favourite as yesterday. Today is flat, until the monster: the endless climb of Genting Highlands. Our tactic is basic but hopefully efficient: we ask non climber to run on the flat to control to offer Jonathan a new opportunity to win the stage.
The pack is grouped when the climb begins. Jonathan attacks from the bottom and no one can follow him. New victory for the Malaysian cannibal.

"LIU DAMING, CHAMPION TO BE"
We came in this Tour de Langkawi to follow Xu Gang’s performance. But Xu Gang is closely watched and has to assume a teammate role in his new team : MAPFRE LINING. But during this 7th stage we have discovered his young teammate Liu Daming who has accepted to answer our questions:
Pinpai Zhongguo (PZ) : Liu Daming who are you?
Liu Daming (LDM) : I am an 18 years old cyclist now riding for MAPFRE LINING. MAPFRE is a Spanish insurance company who has establish a branch in Kunming. Our team is composed of 12 young and talented riders. My role in the team is to work for my leaders and to continue to progress. But today the coach has believed in me and bet on my climber skills.
PZ : Tell us about your stage.
LDM : Orgiginally I was responsible to protect our leader Jonathan (1), who is also the race leader. Jonathan rides at the front of the peloton and I am here to protect him from the wind. I was chosen for this task because I am a decent climber and it was necessary given today’s early climb.
PZ : Well, that climb was in fact terrible and put many riders in a difficult situation!
LDM : My teammates imposed a tempo to the bunch so as to keep the break within 1’ gap. Given the hard climb, it has indeed started to put the worst climber in a bad shape. With a couple of kilometers to the top of the climb, Alexandre (2), who is current Mountain leader, accelerated to consolidate his KoM jersey. He first joined and then passed the breakaway. But the other teams didn’t want him to go so they further accelerated the peloton tempo. At this point there was riders everywhere on the road.
PZ : So Shushemoin accelerated to claim Mountain points, but why has he gone on after that?
LDM : He didn’t really go on, but Alexandre is excellent in downhills so he kept his advantage without too much efforts. When the road flatten again, the chasing group cought him back. But all remaining teammates were already very tired by the chasing. So the coach asked me to attack.
PZ : Was it because you were not tired after this first big climb?
LDM : I have recovered in the downhill, plus the idea wasn’t to isolate myself alone at the front of the race. But that is what has happened, I soon got a 2’ lead then slowed down a bit hoping to see 1 or 2 riders joining my break. But none did and my lead was in fact continuing to grow! Then the coach told me to go for the stage.
PZ : You increased your lead over 10’ with 50 kilometers to go. What did you think at this point?
LDM : First, I couldn’t believe it. I can climb but when Jonathan trains with me in the mountain it looks like he is on a scooter and me on an old bike… So given the profile of the stage and this terrible last climb, I did not really hope I could win. Then of course having a 11’ lead I started dreaming. I was feeling great, more than great in fact, just like in a dream, I wanted to accelerate as if nothing could ever stop me. But the coach told me to calm down and to stay focus.
PZ : You began the climb with a confortable lead but i twas melting away pretty fast.
LDM : The stage was so long : I have the potential to go much faster in the last climb but at this point I was feeling very tired so I managed a prudent tempo.
PZ : When did you realize you were not going to win today?
LDM : The situation started to be tricky as I was no longer sure that I was going to win, so the coach asked Jonathan to attack and help me to the line. And Jonathan did it ! He braked from the pack alone and joined me. With less than 5 kilometers to the line, he slowed down to let me follow him. When I could not follow even his lower pace, I understood I was not going to win.
PZ : Still you did not give it up...
LDM : Of course not ! Usually in such a stage, I end up in a groupetto far from the lead, so even if it was no longer for the win, I still had to fight.
PZ : At the end of the day what would you have needed to close the deal ?
LDM : First some experience, I should have managed the effort better and save more strength for the final climb. My be a bit of luck, some stamina or stronger climber’s ability. Whatever, the important thing is that Jonathan has won. It is another great win for the team. So I might be a little disappointed from a personal perspective, but collectively our team has once again done a fantastic job!
PZ : Liu Daming, thank you and congratulation for your amazing performance. What should we wish you for the next days ?
LDM : I’ll come back to my team mate role. We hope for Jonathan to win it all here. And we hope this great season beginning will transform into a great season.

Everything is going well. For the time being. Manuel has even worked on xls to produce Mapfre requested report. I hardly changed 1 word or two before I push the send button. So I can go to bed early, just in case there is a party tomorrow, for the Tour of Langkawi final stage…

Results
Jonathan Castroviejo won 2 stages and GC of Tour of Wellington. In the Tour of Langkawi we are currently riding, we have already won 5 stages and Jonathan is having a good lead before tomorrow last stage.
Finance
Several points explain the good results:
1. We started the year with 32k thanks to lower installation cost than expected (Lining helped us to reduce some costs locally),
2. Great sportive performances lead to Race Income to get 85% over budget,
3. We did not hire yet top notch rider but got a cheaper one for the time being,
4. We did not recruit scout. However given current Finance, we will offer the job to Mr Rong who is going to prospect China.
Objectives
We have already reached our 1st objective of the year!

I really dig this story and I read it all in one go. Great basic idea to start a cycling team in China. Plus, the multi-layered presentation between racing, segments about the riders and constant sponsor contact really delivers a special atmosphere. The intro was a fun read too and started off the story in a very nice manner. Looking forward to read more. Castroviejo did a great job so far as did his teammates.

@ Shonak: That is the kind of comment that boosts me! There are not many followers on pcm11 stories and from time to time I wonder whether I should continue or not. When someone gets the exact point of the story, it is so sweet to hear. So thank you. I hope I won't dsapoint you in the future.

For this last difficult stage, Jonathan is of course the big favorite. We send Gang in the break but the pack does not give him any space. Nor will he give any when Alexandre attacks at the beginning of the last climb. So Jonathan assumes his status of leader and easily breaks free from the bunch.
Behind Alexandre manages to stay with the (second) best.
