@sutty68 - Just as things were going so well!
@Ian Butler - Or will he?!
@welker3257 - This story is doping free. And is that still the line being used..perhaps Contador is back on the juice given he took over a minute out of him yesterday!!
@brewer90 - I think someone has cottoned on!
TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 16 - DEVASTATION...
I logged out of the computer, hands still trembling…mind still racing. I had a few hours until my delayed flight was due, a flight which I no longer particularly wanted to catch. I headed over to Wasatch Brew Pub and sat at the bar. The place was fairly packed out, businessmen awaiting flights and passing the time with an ice cold one. I checked over the menu, no Russian Standard was served. I’d have to make do with a local draft beverage….The Devastator was an aptly named drink and with its’ stronger alcohol content it was just what I needed.
I had gone without any form of alcohol for 12 weeks, yet now back in the world without any restrictions I found myself on the verge of drinking it. It wasn’t like it was vodka anyway…this was just a beer…nothing dangerous about it. Besides I needed it…who wouldn’t after that email? The barman laid it down in front of me, a deep mahogany texture to it and a light head on top…I lifted the glass to my mouth…the cream like wetness of the beer touched my lip. I tipped the glass to take a full swig of it… |

@byertone - Thank you very much for the kind words! I hope you continue for the remainder of the story...
However to yourself and all others this story will be on hold for the forseeable future due to the fact I have stupidly managed to smash my screen!! I was just going to replace it...however I have been looking for a reason to update my computer for one with much better gaming capablities so I have decided to wait and order a new one! Hopefully will get this done soon and we can get back underway.
I will take this moment to thank everyone for their continued interest in this story. It helps inspire me to continue going and keep you all intrigued. |

@sutty68 - It was indeed, but I have now purchased a new computer and can get back to the story.
@Ianbutler - Was this quick enough...new computer here, updates back underway! And I was furious with the lack of ability to play a career yet
TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 17 - CHANCE MEETING
Suddenly I heard a voice next to me….”Excuse me”…I turned left to see who it was. I didn’t recognise the gentleman but he couldn’t have been any older than mid-late 40’s. ‘Yes can I help you?’…’’well actually I was hoping I may be able to help you’’. His remark surprised me somewhat given I had never seen him before. ’Oh ok, and how do you plan to do that’.
‘’My names Mike Patt, I run a cycling club here in Utah and had seen you out and around on your bike a few times’’
Me: ‘’Nice to meet you Mike…though you still haven’t explained how you plan on helping me’’
Mike: ‘’Well given I haven’t seen you around the area before I was under the impression you were new in town, if it’s something that interests you our club is always looking for new members. It’s a good way to settle into the community and meet some new people’’
Me: ‘’Thanks Mike, but I’m not actually from the area and my stay isn’t a permanent one. In fact I’m leaving Utah today’
Mike: ‘’Ah ok, well that’s a shame, you seemed at ease on that bike of yours, actually you can ride better than some of our guys..if your ever back in the area you should pop in. I must go anyway.
Me: ‘’Ha I don’t know if that says more about me or your members…but thanks I guess. Nice to meet your acquaintance’’
Mike: ‘likewise, take care Owen’’
As he left the bar, I turned back round to my pint, still full, I sat and stared at it pondering for but a moment. I pushed it to one side, got off my stool and left…

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 18 - THE PHONE CALL!
I headed towards my gate, finally my flight had been called. As I walked through the airport my mind was racing. After 12 weeks away from the UK I was heading home. I had steered clear of papers and the internet too afraid that I was still the focus of attention in the sport pages. Whilst deep down I knew that the media had probably moved onto someone else by now I was also aware that part of the reason was I was elsewhere. Going home put my back in the firing line, not just with them but life in general. I was going to have to start over again…but how & where? It wasn’t like I could just fly in under the radar. I reached my gate number and stood in line, patiently waiting for my seat number to be called…my phone began to vibrate, a call…probably my parents checking in on me, I awkwardly struggled to fetch it out of my pocket before they were diverted to voicemail…’Hello’…
I took the phone away from my ear, I could feel myself go flush white. ‘Excuse me Sir, are you boarding the flight’…it was one of the airline attendants. I hesitated a brief moment, trying to gather my thoughts. ‘Ermm no, sorry, something has come up’.

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 19 - A FRESH START
I gathered my bags and turned and walked away from my flight, away from home. That option was no longer available to me, not realistically anyway. Not now…not after that, knowing what I know. If I was going to start over again it would have to be here, in the States. It was my only choice. I kept going over the avenues open to me in my head…but every time I came to the same conclusion. This was the best shot I had…the only one! It wasn’t like I had anything back home anyway…my car had been re-possessed, flat sold, possessions flogged. The only thing back home was family and they would understand…they would have to.
Shortly after re-arranging my luggage to be brought back to Utah I called the parents. I was on the phone for almost two hours, trying to explain my decision as best I could. They didn’t need to know the full story, it was best not to tell them, but they needed something. I told them I felt that starting a fresh, away from everything was my best chance of staying off the alcohol. I needed a new challenge where people didn’t know me & couldn’t judge me on my past mistakes. They tried to understand as best they could, I could tell they weren’t sure it was the right thing. My mum insisting I needed the support of family around me, but I was insistent. This was my final decision and I was sticking to it. |

@sutty68 - I hope so too, and in reference to your previous comment...you may have to wait a while to find out. There is an underlying side story which runs parallel to the career!
@cycleman123 - There will be a few more of those in the future so hope you like being on the edge of your seat! |

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 20 - SALT LAKE GIVE ME A BREAK!
By now it was nearing the end of October in Salt Lake, the weather was cold but nothing too brutal. The temperatures were beginning to fall sharply as the fall started to come to its conclusion and winter moved in. Whilst I at least had a bit of money to my name it was far from enough to support me for any period of time. That first month I bounced around between 3 hostels, all the time looking for work. Every passing day without success my motivation would dwindle. I knew starting over wasn’t going to be easy yet I was all too aware that without something to keep me heading in the right direction I was going to struggle.
Finally a break, a small diner I frequented regularly was looking for waiting staff. I had small chats with the owner before over a breakfast in the morning, or tea on my afternoon breaks from job hunting. The place was just small, offset from a busy road meaning plenty of customers. I headed in, optimistic that I could finally get work. How I should learn not to be optimistic, before the ad even had time to settle in the window it was being taken down…the owners grandson wanted some work and naturally he was to take precedence! As I exited the diner, my mood non to pleasant I was barged aside by an entering customer…Usually I would just continue but not this time…’Hey, watch yourself you prat’…the guy turned back towards me.

TOUR DE SPIRAL FINAL STAGE - NEW DAWN NEW DAY NEW LIFE!
‘Owen…right?!’…’Erm Yeh’…I was confused. ‘It’s Mike, Mike Patt…we met at the airport a few weeks ago’. ‘Oh hey, Mike. Sorry, didn’t mean to be rude, one of those days’. ‘No, No sorry…I was in a bit of a hurry and didn’t see you’. He asked me how I had been and why I was still around. Whatever he was hurrying for upon entering soon disappeared as we sat over a coffee and caught up. I was surprised that he even remembered me to be honest, let alone that he would take the time to catch up with me.
‘So you’re sticking around the area for some time then?’ ‘Well as long as my bank balance allows me, I’ve been trying to find work but no luck so far’. It was a subtle hint. ‘We could always use a helping hand up at the cycling club…it’s nothing special but if you’re looking for work it’ll do the trick’. I accepted in a heartbeat without any thought as to how much it paid or how many hours it was. ‘Thanks Mike, you’ve really helped me out’. He stood, shook my hand and smiled…’My pleasure and in return you can get back on that bike of yours and represent us’.
@sutty68 - Didn't mean to alarm you But everything has worked out for him by the end of the tour.
To everyone who has followed this story so far thank you very much. Your kind words and continued interest help me focus on continuing. Although it does seem that it's only Sutty & Cycleman left
The next tour will get underway in the next couple of days, whereby a fair bit more cycling will become present within the story! Thank you all again. |
