Seeking Redemption: Tour De Spiral Final Stage - New Dawn, New Day, New Life!

@Ian Butler - Not sure it was his choice given he had no alternative

@sutty68 - Lets keep our fingers crossed it does turn out to be that way.

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 10 - Everythings So Rocky

With fallout from the scandal still relatively fresh in the mind my parents had decided that it was best to get away from the country for a bit. They had enquired about a number of rehab centres in the States and eventually settled on one in Utah. Secluded and away from prying eyes it was concluded this would provide the best chance of recovery and keep me away from any potential relapses. Secluded was perhaps an understatement. The flight took nearly ten hours and before jet lag even had a chance to kick in I was hustled into a black Chevrolet 4x4 and driven out towards the rehab center.

The setting was without doubt spectacular, set amongst the northern Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains you couldn’t have asked for better views. After checking in with reception I was shown to my room and then left to get acquainted with what would, for the next 12 weeks be my home.

Not bad for a rehab centre!

@Cycleman123 - Not bad at all, who knows it may just inspire him for the future!

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 11 - 12 STEPS TO A NEW BEGINNING

If I had any belief this was going to be like a mini holiday they were quickly put to bed on my first morning. Woken at 7am I was briefed by my councillor on what lay ahead. A 12 step programme, which involved lots of various sessions, from yoga to psychiatric evaluations…from life control to physical exercise. The idea was to take back control of my life and give me a sense of direction and purpose again. It sounded like a whole lot of cods wallop to me, let’s be frank how was I going to get my life back on track…I was a sportsman…competition and success was ingrained in me. I didn’t want some normal 9-5 life, that wasn’t me. However given my location and circumstances I had very little choice but to go along with it.

@AP - Thank you for the kind words! Hope you continue to follow!

@sutty68 - One which I haven't used either. Must be the story writing, bringing out my age!

@Cycleman123 - I know your liking the story but double posts aren't required Wink

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 12 - FINDING AN INNER PEACE

It took me two weeks to really push myself into the programme, filled with scepticism and wallowing in self-pity I tried my best to fly under the radar and just get out there. It was never going to work so I decided to do the next best thing, throw myself into it. Whilst I still found the majority of the ‘exercises’ useless I did find one which gave me a new lease of life. Part of the programme involved physical exercise ranging from running to weights, but my favourite was cycling. With the idyllic settings I would but for a brief few hours find an inner peace. At first I just rode to get away from the enclosed surroundings of the rehab center itself, but after a while I began to enjoy the physical aspect of it. My body was in shocking condition for a professional athlete but this at least tested me and made me realise just what I had been doing to myself.

@Sutty68 - I think his competitive spirit has been rekindled! There's hope yet.

@Cycleman123 - What do you mean finally!? Are you saying you've had to wait to long for the introduction of two wheels? Wink

@Ian Butler - It does indeed Smile

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 13 - GETTING THROUGH ON TWO WHEELS

Difficulties arose from time to time, my mind still wandering off to reminisce upon my fall from grace. Each time I felt like I was getting on and forgetting it would just pop up and then proceed to niggle away at me. The psychologists would attempt to get me to open but I didn’t want to discuss it. Why would I?! It was the worst moment of my life and the episode which landed me here. I came to the conclusion that I could just ride it out of my mind…every time it entered and I began to recount over everything I would just hop on the bike and begin to pedal. I would continue, not really focussing on where I was going but instead just ploughing forward until the memory had been buried away once again. Cycling was saving me…not psychiatrists or yoga…just this simple task of making two wheels go round for as long and as fast as possible. The location certainly helped!

By the end of the 12 week programme I had passed, although it was noted that I did the bare minimum with regards to therapy sessions and refused to discuss many areas of ‘negativity’. Yet I had been alcohol free for my duration and had at least shown commitment to the programme. I checked out and was signed off, optimism abound I set off to the airport ready to try and put my life back in order.

Cycleman123
Where are you in the GC right now, who's winning? Pfft

Ian Butler
What an odd question, Cycleman...

--

He's doing good now, let's keep him on that bike!

owen10ozzy
@Cycleman123 - Haha! He is currently 4th behind 'no career'...'no direction'...and 'despair' but ahead of 'negativity' & 'alcohol' Wink

@Ian Butler - That is the aim although we never know whats on the road ahead!

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 14 - CHECKING IN...CHECKING MAIL

Having been chauffeured back to the airport I felt optimistic about moving on with my life. Sure it still hurt that I had been stopped from doing the thing that I most loved, but I had renewed hope….the end of my football career didn’t mean the end of my life. Upon check in I was informed that my flight had been delayed, just what one needs when seeking optimism! I took the extra time I had to check my emails. Apart from the odd phone call all electronics were banned from the rehab center. It was a way to distance people from the goings on which had triggered problems in the first place. I couldn’t find fault with the idea to be honest, especially given the amount of media limelight I had endured before going into rehabilitation. I soon learnt that I had been inundated with emails, all from various people. Journalists still looking for some more juicy stories, abusive messages from fans and former team mates, nothing which I hadn’t already been sent before. Then one caught my eye, it was from FIFA and Interpol…..

As I clicked on the email my heart began to race. I hadn’t had any contact with the governing bodies since the FA’s ruling. I was expecting news and whilst I half expected it to be bad I still itched to see what they said. *click*….

@welker3257 - Just banned from football thankfully! If he was banned from all sports I don't think he'd have made it!!

TOUR DE SPIRAL STAGE 15 - THE POWERS THAT BE

www.988bet.biz/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/fifa_logo.jpg

‘’Dear Mr Meek,

Following an on-going investigation into the case relating to match fixing we at FIFA have decided to not only uphold the 4 year ban received from your national governing body but also extend the ban to 6 years internationally. As a result of this you will be unable to play professional football for any team/league which is part of the 206 national associations whom hold membership with FIFA.
Under the laws of the game we have found you guilty of match fixing whereby:

“You have manipulated the outcome or single aspect of a competition and or match for the financial gain of yourself and others”

Whilst we appreciate that there were extenuating circumstances surrounding your case, your actions brought the game into disrepute.

You will have 14 days to submit any formal protest you may have with the conclusion we have reached and the verdict we have given.

Yours Sincerely

President

Sepp Blatter

Fédération Internationale de Football Association

I felt my world crumble once more, not only had my ban been lengthened I was now unable to seek any avenue into the game since it was now a global ban. I knew it would be bad news but this I couldn’t quite comprehend. If a door was slightly ajar on my career beforehand it had been firmly slammed shut now. I could feel the rage and anger build up inside me, my sense of hope vanished in an instant. Who was I kidding….12 step plans weren’t going to change my life…I needed a friend, someone I could count on….

But what if he gets a bad friend, like Chris Froome, who introduces him to doping?
