Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
April 7th, 2013
Bilbao – Bilbao (ITT): 25.7 kms - Hilly
The final stage is an individual time trial, but like this race has been, there are two climbs for the riders to deal with on the stage which should shift the favorites to those better at climbing.
The early best times are nothing compared to the time set by World Champion Tony Martin (OPQS) who started about halfway through the field. And for the remainder of the race no one would ever really threaten his time as he takes the stage win.
The race though would come down to the final three riders, with Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) pushing a great pace, fighting hard enough to take 5th on the stage 26 seconds behind Martin.
2nd place overall at the start of the day is Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) only two seconds behind Ryder Hesjedal, and Valverde would post a much better than expected time finishing 10th, 51 seconds down on Martin, but it would still cost him as Vincenzo Nibali moves four seconds ahead.
The race leader at the start didn't have room to spare with only a two second lead, and in the first time split he would improve another two seconds over Alejandro Valverde. The pace wouldn't change as the 2nd split showed another two seconds improvement, and the final time showed again another two seconds, giving him a time just good enough four seconds the leader over Nibali.

Paris – Roubaix
April 8th, 2013
Compiegne – Roubaix: 258.8 kms - Flat/Cobbles
Paris - Roubaix is our third monument of the season and challenges the riders with cobblestones and more cobblestones with a nice added bit of cobblestones. The length at 259 kilometers will also challenge the riders, and for today the weather may be the hardest part as the entire course is getting storms with a heavy downpour and strong winds.
A small breakaway gets off early, though they will certainly suffer badly in the weather. The riders are Ion Izagirre (Euskaltel), Maciej Bodnar (Cannondale), Daniel Oss, Tristan Valentin (Cofidis), Yannick Talabardon (Sojasun).
The race reaches its final selection as riders are suffering badly, many rider who have already dropped behind the first few groups are calling it quits instead of fighting both the cobbles and the weather which has gotten even worse. On the front though a select group of four, Boonen (OPQS), Cancellara (RSLT), Flecha (Vacansoleil) and Breschel (Saxo) are pulling away.
The race became clear on the Carefour de l'Arbre as Tom Boonen simple rides away from Fabian Cancellara. Boonen must have really found the legs as he has been driving the front now for most of the race just letting riders fall off behind him. Now the last has fallen and only the Velodrome awaits him.
The legendary finish at the Roubaix Velodrome is a lap of glory for Tom Boonen as he enters alone and finishes just as his closest competion Fabian Cancellara is entering. The Velodrome would see some excitement though as a group of 10 fights for third. Sylvain Chavanel (OPQS) wins and will join his teammate on the podium. Only 36 riders finish the race.

De Brabantse Pijl
April 11th, 2013
Leuven – Overijse: 204.3 kms - Flat?/Cobbles
Another race on the cobbles De Brabantse Pijl is an 1.HC race that returns the riders to Belgium and brings the hills back into play after the riders dealt with the flatter cobbles. The hills aren't long, but the gradients are fierce.
A small three man breakaway heads out into another stormy day of weather the riders certainly will not enjoy the wet uphill cobbled climbs. Leading the group is Marc Goos (Blanco), followed by Manuel Quinziato, Roger Kluge (NetApp).
The final selection forms on the third lap of the race as they go up the cobbled climbs with Edvbald Boasson Hagen (Sky), Vincent Jérôme (Europcar), Fabian Cancellara (RSLT), and BMC's Philippe Gilbert. The four would stay close all the way to the end.
Fabian Cancellara would take the stage, as the man who had the most left after the grueling cobbles and climbs Edvald Boasson Hagen stays right on his wheel but cannot go by him, with Gilbert and Jérôme falling a little bit behind.

Ardennes Classics
April 15,18,22 - 2013
PreRace Guide
Finally the cobbles season is behind BMC, which as a whole the team did better than expected, the concern going forward is wondering if the cobbles took too much out of the riders needed for the hills, primarily Philippe Gilbert who will continue to lead the team.
Three races:
Amstel Gold Race
La Flèche Wallone
Liège - Bastogne - Liège
BMC Startlist
Leader: Philippe Gilbert Co-Leader: Cadel Evans Free: Greg Van Avermaet Team-mate: Thor Hushovd Team-mate: Stephen Cummings (LFW,LBL) Team-mate: Mathias Frank (AGR,LBL) Team-mate: Steve Morabito (LFW) Team-mate: Dominick Nerz (AGR,LBL) Team-mate: Daniel Oss (LFW,LBL) Team-mate: Marco Pinotti (AGR) Team-mate: Manuel Quinziato (LFW)
Team Goals
There is only one goal in the Ardennes for BMC, and it is very, very simple; Win. Philippe Gilbert is the best in the world on this hills and these are no doubt his favorite races of the season. We will be sending as strong of team possible to assist him, including Cadel Evans.
While winning is the priority, some of the riders, especially Cadel Evans will be giving everything they can in support, but also building form for the Giro d'Italia which is now less than a month away. We also have reports that Alessandro Ballan is recovering well and we expect him to be back on the bike shortly and ready to race in June.

Amstel Gold Race
April 15th, 2013
Maastricht – Valkenburg: 252 kms - Hilly
The Amstel Gold Race is the first of the Ardennes classics, and the Netherlands biggest race. The punchers enjoy the arrival of these races, and the famed Cauberg awaits the strongest at the finish.
An early breakaway of several riders, feature former world champion Thor Hushovd gets off to a good start, and gains a lead of around 10 minutes over the peloton before a Cannondale, Sky, and Orica led field start to bring them back.
With the peloton in hard chase, Thor gives it one last attempt before finally giving in as the last of the breakaway. Teammates Gilbert, Evans and Van Avermaet though are waiting for their turn to let loose.
Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky) makes a move, and the field doesn't react, confident that the group will be able to bring him back in. BMC still has fellow Norwegian Hushovd up the road as the peloton is struggling to bring him back.
Attack by Francesco Reda (Androni), again no one follows, so the peloton must be confident he can't make it too far out on his own, but his attack just as the last of the breakaway is caught might have a chance with only 20km left to go.
An attack by Maxim Iglinski (Astana), it's marked by Philippe Gilbert, Jelle Vanendert (Lotto), Fabian Cancellara (RSLT), and John Gadret (AG2R). Perhaps this is the move that will work, they still have 10km left to go though. Orica and Cannondale quickly moves to the front.
World Champion Philippe Gilbert has ridden clear of the attacking group and ahead of the peloton! Will anyone be able to catch him now with only 6km and only the Cauberg left before the finish?
Yes they do! And when it is time for a sprint, Peter Sagan knows how to finish blowing by Simon Gerrans (Orica) for the win. Edvald Boasson Hagen leads a sprint for 3rd over Fabian Cancellara (RSLT), Philippe Gilbert, Thomas Voeckler (Europcar), Roman Kreuziger (Saxo) and Jelle Vanendert (Lotto).

La Flèche Wallonne
April 18th, 2013
Charleroi – Huy: 197.4 kms - Hilly
Le Flèche Wallonne is our second of the three Ardennes races, and we race in the Belgian hills featuring one of the toughest climbs in the sport with Mur de Huy. The race organizers feature three times up this climb and have placed the finish line at the top making the steep slope very decisive.
A nine man breakaway manages to get clear, the BMC rider Daniel Oss is a solid rider in the hills with a nice sprint, though likely not useful here. The weather is again bad as it has been for most of the past month on the northern coast of Europe. The wet pavement won't make the climbs any easier.
The first trip up the Mur de Huy Cadel Evans attacks! There are still 94 kilometers left to race, but the Aussie is putting the pressure on early, perhaps a plan to meet up with Oss in the breakaway if he can pull away from the peloton? This will certainly let favorite Gilbert sit comfortably in the pack now led by Astana who are working for Vincenzo Nibali.
Not wanting to be left out, some more attacks are made by some race favorites! Evans is on his way up the the break well clear of the field, this chase features Dan Martin (Garmin), Francis De Greef (Lotto), Franco Pellizoti (Androni), and Richie Porte (Sky), things are starting to get scary for the peloton.
Both chases meet up and join the now swelling breakaway with 14 members, BMC is the only team with two, and as expected Oss is going to have to take some big pulls at the front while Cadel sits comfortably at the back after his attack to recover. The other big favorites do the same just sitting on.
Once apparently wasn't enough as Evans drives up the Mur de Huy splintering the breakaway and dropping the entire original breakaway keeping only the four riders that were chasing him before in tow. The peloton has only slowly been gaining ground and will have a serious task to catch this elite group.
Attack from Simon Gerrans (Orica), Roman Kreuziger (Saxo), and Maxime Monfort (RSLT), the lead group of five is still out front. Some of the favorites are clearly starting to get nervous as the race gets close to the finish and having race favorites up the road isn't helping to calm those nerves. Astana still maintains control of the peloton so Nibbles must be feeling good.
After the lead group is caught on the Côte d'Amay Evans decides to put the hammer down again on the Côte de Villers-le-Bouillet hoping to be the first to reach the base of the Mur de Huy and give himself a chance to be first at the top for the win. I'm not sure if he is in great form yet, but the Giro better watch out if he is going to ride like this in Italy.
With Evans caught just starting the Mur de Huy, Vicenzo Nibali puts in the final attack Philippe Gilbert responds and is the only rider who can stay with the Italian, the steep stuff is still just up the road and they are so close to the finish now. The race has come down to just these two riders.
As they race under the flamme rouge Gilbert has pulled alongside Nibali and the two are side by side up to the finish! Albasini (Orica) is trying to make it a three man race but will not be able to catch either of them as the Dual to the top continues.
Philippe Gilbert tires first and Vincenzo Nibali is able to take the win. The difficult climb provided one of the best races of the season so far and the riders made it an incredible race. Gilbert will certainly head into L-B-L upset he didn't get the win and ready for some revenge. Nibali will likely also be ready for Liège and looks to be in great form for the Giro.
