@ PCM rulezz: I'm simply not that good at cobbles, so I think third is decent for me. Haussler might be frustrated, though, considering he already came in second in both races two years ago
@ Teddy: Thanks! Good to see you here
@ sutty68: Yeah, unlucky indeed. His first part of the season is over now, second target will be the Tour, maybe he'll get some reconsiliation there.
@ pcm2009fan: Yes, me too. I had the choice to either wait and sprint for second, or go all in and try to catch Cancellara. Well, I might have chosen wrong, but I don't regret it
@ Freitas: With a better daily shape, I think, more would have been possible. Next year, maybe
we're finally there! My first race of 2013 is just around the corner! The last few days were great, I've spent them here in and around Salamanca, where the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon starts tomorrow. Along with Damiano Caruso and Mauro Finetto, who'll also start their season tomorrow, we tried to put the final touches to our fitness and now we're well prepared!
There's one small downer, though: Tiziano Dall'Antonia, who was supposed to join us, suffered from a small fracture of his collarbone during Rund um Köln and will be out until the end of this month. We really hope for him to recover in time for the Giro, but either way his shape won't be great. For now, Davide Cimolai takes his place.
The other guys around Peter Sagan should be here any minute now. They're coming from Belgium where they rode the Brabantse Pijl, so they are in good shape. As I'll show you in the preview, we send a very strong team to enter the race tomorrow, which only increases my excitement. Finally, I'll be part of the great results we're having so far!
So, my management will be putting up the preview soon, and tomorrow, you'll enjoy the usual live ticker. I hope you'll like it.
Firstly held in 1985, the Vuelta a Castilla y León has been under Spanish control. Only 6 of the 28 winners have been foreigners, most recently Levi Leipheimer in 2009. Record winner is currently Alberto Contador with 3 wins.
The race, that takes place in Spain's largest autonomous community, Castile and León, has mostly been a five-day stage race, but in the course of the recent financial crisis, it has been cut down to only three stages.
The three stages of the Vuelta a Castilla y León provide a very diverse profile. With a flat, a hilly and a mountaineous stage, this is the perfect preperation race for all occasions.
Stage one doesn't look very demanding and it probably won't be. The profile suggests a sprint finish but pure sprinters should mind the small ascent within the last kilometers.
The difficulty rises on day two. Four categorized climbs, especially the latter ones, should give the aggressive, punchy riders the opportunity for an attack and might cause some time gaps.
The peloton opposes three huge mountains on the last stage. The final and hardest one, the Puerto de Navacerrada, is 50 kms from the finish, though, which might well equate some of the differences made on the climbs.
Overall
In case that notable gaps actually occure, these are the riders to watch:
Damiano Cunego

Spoiler
Our team is sort of divided in half. The puncheurs around Sagan and Cunego are in top shape, as this is their last race before the Ardennes. The rest of us (Mauro, Davide, Caruso and me) are just at the beginning of our season and not yet in shape.
Still, we bring an enormously strong team here, without a doubt the strongest in the competition. That makes us very variable and able to react to different scenarios:
In case stage two and three actually turn out to be hard enough to make a difference, Damiano Cunego is our main man for the GC. If a larger group comes in everytime, we'll count on Peter Sagan to get the bonus seconds in the sprints.
Marco Marcato and I have been assigned free roles. That means we're both free to join breaks, he preferably on stage two, I on stage three.
As you can see, I'm still lacking of the proper shape to be among the best for this race. Nevertheless, the DS trusts me enough to give me a free role, so if I'm lucky, I might have a shot at the mountain jersey. That would be pretty much the optimum. If I'm not in a break, I'll just try to hang on to the front as long as possible and see if I can be of any help to our two leaders. .
The easiest stage of the race. Not very long and relatively flat. Probably a mass sprint.
I won't do much today, probably. It's not my profile to get in a break. If the team doesn't get a rider in the BOTD, I might participate in the chase. Otherwise, I'll just sit back, try not to waste much energy, and keep on improving my shape.
4
Following some of the first attacks, Matthew Busche tries to get into the break of the day.
158
.
13
Weird situation now: A four men group around Busche is 40 seconds in front of 15 followers, including Marco Marcato, who are leading with 1'20 over the peloton.
149
.
27
The groups united to form a large, 19 riders group that is 4 minutes in front of the peloton. Most notable riders are Marcato, Jonathan Bellis (Vodafone) and Matteo Trentin (Colnago).
135
.
45
The peloton is taking it easy, the advance grew to seven minutes. Dominik Nerz is protecting Cunego, both are looking very comfortable, having a little chat.
117
.
74
Saur and Vodafone picked up the pace in the main pack, the advance is shrinking. Vodafone's effort seems a bit strange, having two strong riders in the break.
88
.
81
Nerz is fulfilling his domestique duties today, dropping back to grab water bottles. His terrain comes tomorrow and the day after.
81
.
101
Marco Marcato easily wins the mountain sprint and takes the mountain jersey for tomorrow.
61
.
117
45 kms to go and the advance is down to 3'30. Doesn't look good for the escapees.
45
.
142
That is interesting: Sky and T-Mobile in the pack can't seem to reel them in. 20 kms to go and the advance is at 2'20. That could be really close. Trentin, Shpilevski (Katusha) and Voss (Endura) are leading the break.
20
.
154
Vodafone's giving everything now, within the last 10 kms, the advance is down to one minute.
8
.
155
But that may not be it: Matthew Busche gives everything to launch a last attack by Marco Marcato!
7
.
158
Marcato is in front now! 45 seconds to the pack, that should be enough. But Alberto Contoli (Colnago) is still following him!
4
.
158
Meanwhile, UniCredit is building their sprint train for Peter Sagan, just in case. Dominik Nerz follows the world champion.
4
.
160
Marcato looks set for the win, but in the pack, the UniCredit riders are a bit behind.
2
.
162
He timed his attack and the sprint to perfection: Marco Marcato takes a well-deserved win, his fourth this season!
0
.
162
Contoli managed to stay in front of the pack. Behind him, Sagan managed to fly past everyone and take the third place despite his bad position. Dominik Nerz lost his wheel earlier, got boxed in and didn't have the energy to get a better result than his 58th spot.

Now that was a great start! Marco did a fantastic job in the last kilometers to bring that win home. And half of this victory also belongs to Matthew Busche, for he did all the work in the group, and without his pre-attack, Marcato's advance wouldn't have been so big. Peter Sagan proved to be the best sprinter, although we messed up a bit in the sprint preperations.
This also makes Marcato our provisional leader here, atleast for tomorrow. We'll have to see how he'll get over the mountains on stage three.
My day was pretty calm, doing some domestique work. In the sprint, I tried my legs a little at first, but soon felt that I still lack quite a bit of shape. But I guess that was to be expected.
Tomorrow should be more interesting for me. See you then,
JuanMotr wrote:
Great start! hope Dominik will get in to shape before Giro. Also I'm sure you mentioned it but I can't remember. Who will lead the team at Giro?
The leader is Janez Brajkovic. But Dominik is co-leader and aims for the young riders classification, and depending on the field, a Top 10 overall.
It gets more interesting today, the puncheurs are next. The first half of the stage shouldn't be too hard but the last two ascents will provide some difficulties. It's questionable, though, whether bigger gaps will appear, due to the long descent towards the finish.
The team will do everything to put a man into the break: We'd have to make all the work, plus the stage looks tailor-made for an escapee to win and there are lots of KoM points up for grabs. With Marcato in the leader's jersey, it's Damiano Caruso, Matthew Busche and me who are going to try and get the job done. I'm optimistic that one of us will succeed.
0
The starting shot hasn't even fade away yet and Matthew Busche is already on the attack!
157
.
4
He's soon joined by Bert de Waele (Landbouwkrediet). More riders are trying to bridge the gap.
153
.
16
They weren't allowed to go clear. Everything is back together.
141
.
19
Following the next attacks, it's Dominik Nerz who tries to break free!
138
.
25
With Jarlinson Pantano (Colombia), Nerz has built an advance of one minute close to the top of the first mountain sprint.
132
.
27
In the Spanian snow, Nerz collects the full points.
130
.
40
Three more riders have made the jump to the front, and Johannes Fröhlinger (NetApp) just edges out Dominik at the second mountain sprint. They are still only about a minute in front.
117
.
69
The group around Nerz is almost caught as some other try to break free from the pack. Among them is Damiano Caruso.
88
.
75
The attack is half-hearted, though, and they fall back again. Nerz and co are still in front.
82
.
88
The group finally got some space between them and the peloton but Dominik seems to be struggling!
69
.
96
The situation changes every few minutes! With a couple of riders attacking, we have a ten men group in front – Dominik is still there – 1'30 in front. Doesn't look too good for them, though.
61
.
105
5 kms from the top of the penultimate climb, Nerz has to let go and falls back into the peloton.
52
.
110
Matteo Carrara (Farnese Vini) wins the mountain sprint. Along with three other riders, he has three minutes of advance now. Nerz still leads the mountain ranking, though.
47
.
127
Matthew Busche is leading the main group now at an incredible pace. 30 kms to go and the advance of the leaders dropped to under two minutes.
30
.
130
It's obviously not his day: Along with Damiano Caruso, Dominik Nerz drops from the about 50 men strong group.
27
.
132
Soon after, the real action starts at the other end of the group: Intxausti, Plaza and Javier Moreno start the attacks!
25
.
135
Overall leader Marco Marcato doesn't look good at all! While Cunego does the pace to reel the attackers back in, he loses ground. Will he lose his jersey after one day already?
22
.
137
Cunego's work pays off. No one is left in front with one km from the top of the last ascent.
20
.
138
Di Luca wins the last mountain sprint, now it's official: Dominik will wear the mountain jersey tomorrow!
19
.
143
Marcato made it over the top with the front group as the remaining 46 riders descend towards the finish.
14
.
147
10 kms from the finish, it's Christian Knees (Sky), who tries another attack.
10
.
154
The finish is coming closer and closer and Knees still has a small advance. But Peter Sagan in white just lies in wait for his final, strong acceleration!
3
.
156
In the last 1000 meters, it's Angel Madrazo (Lotto), who is the first to go after Knees. Sagan is following!
1
.
157
And to everyone's surprise, Sagan isn't able to match his speed. Madrazo wins in an incredibly tight finish in front of Löfkvist (Sky) and his team mate Jan Bakelandts. Sagan only finishes fourth.
0
.
157
Dominik Nerz eventually finishes far back, 50th, more than 10 minutes behind the winner.

Really not the best day for the team. We clearly wanted the stage win in the final, which we didn't get, not even a podium. Peter was pretty frustrated, and Damiano told me he had hoped to be of more use as his lead out, but had to use to much energy in keeping the field together. Had Marco been in better shape, he might have done that instead. But at least he keeps his leader's jersey.
As for me, I'm torn between the happyness over the mountain jersey and the disappointment of my performance in the second half of the race. The problem was simply that I had to waste too much energy to get into the break in the first place. And then, after sprinting for the points on the first two climbs, I was basically dead for the rest of the race and never managed to recover. I really feel that I'm not in the shape that I want to be.
Anyways, I'm still happy that I'm wearing the polkadots, and I'll try everything to keep it tomorrow. See you then,
