@ all: Thanks for the kind words. I've been very happy with my recent performances. Hopefully some more wins are coming my way.

Almost as soon as the race began, Federico Canuti attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/603.jpg
Canuti is aggressive from the outset.

The peloton was perhaps stunned to see a rider make a move so early on. Once they settled themselves, several other riders bridged to Canuti to form the day's break.

On the descent from the early high-point on the day, Sacha Modolo fell. Alberto Contoli and Paolo Locatelli fell back to retrieve him, and quite easily shepherded him back into the peloton no worse for the wear.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/604.jpg
Modolo picks himself up.

Up the road, Canuti continued to ride with purpose, driving the break group forward. At 100km to go, their advantage was 8'00.

At 40km to go, it had shrunk to 3'28.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/605.jpg
Canuti leads the break.

As the peloton closed in, a crash happened. Colnago had some riders get caught up, but both Modolo and Belletti made it through in the front group.

It was unclear what caused the incident, but it gave the break a slimmer of chance.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/606.jpg
A crash holds up the peloton.

At 10km to go, the dream was over. Not willing to give up, Canuti, somewhat desperately attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/607.jpg
Canuti goes again with the peloton close behind.

Canuti's attack did not last very long, as he was exhausted from the long day of work. However his companion, Tomasz Nose (Adria Mobil) countered the move and made a nice gap.

As the peloton swallowed the rest of the break, Nose was alone up the road.

Originally, Colnago was going to ride for Belletti. However, as the day went on, it was clear, despite his crash, Modolo was the stronger option. As sprint trains brought the peloton forward to the line, Belletti was leading Modolo out.

Nose was first under the flamme rouge, trying to hold of the group. Davide Rebellin (Miche - Guerciotti) opened up first. Normally a protagonist on the hilly terrain, the veteran rider was going strong. As Rebellin caught up to Nose, Modolo launched himself.

He swung across the road to left side, hoping to pass the slowing Nose.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/608.jpg
Modolo goes all the way on the left.

On the sunny day, Modolo had too far to go to catch Rebellin. It is not surprising Rebellin captured a win during the three-day event; seeing him win on flat ground is odd.

Modolo worked well with Belletti and was the second across the line. Still no win, but a good ride. Belletti managed himself well in the sprint, grabbing 6th.

Poor Nose came in 12th, missing a Top 10 finish.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/609.jpg
Rebellin wins.

Normally Rebellin can't outsprint Modolo, the crash must have costed him some energy. 2nd is good, so up to a win!

Nice top 10 placements in all of the three classics. Cunego is an autumn monster and Rebellin is doped Wink

@ all: Thanks. Perhaps the crash affected Modolo, but I still doubt he would've beat Rebellin there.

Trofeo Melinda

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/610.jpg

Fondo - Fondo: 197.9km

Another day, another hilly one-day race in the Italian autumn. Despite a less-storied history than many of its counterparts, the past winners of the Trofeo Melinda are nothing to sneeze at; in recent years, names like Vincenzo Nibali, Giovanni Visconti, Stefano Garzelli, and Davide Rebellin, have all rode to victory in Fondo.

Colnago were very aggressive in the early stages of the race. Perhaps more aptly put, Alberto Contoli was aggressive. The young rider made several attempts to break free from the peloton.

Everytime he was chased down.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/611.jpg
Contoli can't get away.

Quite a strong group got away as the peloton hit the circuit climb for the first time. In the move was Vladimir Efimkin (Team Type 1), Jurgen Van Goolen (Veranda's Willems - Accent), Andrey Kashechkin (Lampre - ISD), Fortunato Baliani (D'Angelo & Antenucci - Nippo), and Paxti Villa (De Rosa - Ceramica Flaminia).

As the descended the for the second time, out of four total, their lead sat at 3'36.

Efimkin leads a dangerous group down the climb.

As the peloton chased down the move, the Colnago riders had a tough time with the pace. With Domenico Pozzovivo taking a small breather before the Settimana Ciclistica Lombarda, Marco Frapporti was leading the team today.

Unfortunately, he lost contact with the leading group long before the race was to be decided.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/613.jpg
Colnago's last chance watches the peloton ride away.

With the breakaway still away after the last descent, Miche - Guerciotti drove the peloton on, working for Rebellin and Constantino Zaballo.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/614.jpg
A fast descent.

At 6km to go, Sylwester Szmyd (Liquigas - Cannondale) and Rebellin attacked, trying to reach the breakaway riders.

Szymd and Rebellin go.

Lampre and Katusha were ready and brought the peloton forward.

At the flamme rouge, one rising kilometer stood in front of the leading group. It consisted of 12 riders; the 5 from the break, followed by Szmyd, Zaballa, Rebellin, Mitja Mahoric (Adria Mobil), Dries Devenyns (Quick·Step Cycling Team), Przemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre - ISD), and Danilo Di Luca (Katusha Team).

The last kilometer.

Up the final drag, no one could deal with the power of Szmyd. Normally a super-domestique in service of Nibali or Ivan Basso, the Pole seized the rare opportunity to ride for himself.

Di Luca grabbed 2nd with a late burst, while Miche got third in the form of Zaballa. Somewhat surprisingly, it was the Spaniard, and not Rebellin who had the most left on the final climb.

Frapporti was Colnago's first finisher in 34th, nearly 8 minutes down.

And this race is the reason why you can't do it alone with Pozzovivo (and Modolo of course). Good that you've got some good signings for next season.

Giro del Veneto

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/618.jpg

Padova - Padova: 232.2km

On the hilly roads in Veneto, the riders will tackle a difficult course, one that looks remarkably similar to the route in the GP Ouest - France...

Nevertheless, Marco Frapporti and the Colnago squad look to bounce back after a disappointing Trofeo Melinda.

Early in the day, three riders broke free from the peloton. They were Vladimir Efimkin (Team Type 1), Guillaume Levarlet (Saur - Sojasun), and Henry Frusto (D'Aneglo & Antenucci - Nippo).

This is the second race in a row Efimkin has ridden very aggressively.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/619.jpg
The trio on their merry adventure.

Frusto fell halfway through the race. Although he recovered, he was only a few seconds ahead of the peloton and decided to sit up instead of fighting on.

Almost as soon as Frusto was brought back in, Evgeni Petrov (Pro Team Astana) and Diego Milán (Caja Rural) attacked.

They were able to bridge the gap up to Levarlet and Efimkin. When they made the connection, the group of four was 3'30 ahead.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/620.jpg
Petrov, with Milán not far behind, get to the front of the race.

The four riders worked well together, and maintained a lead of 4'33 with 30km left on the day. The peloton had been whittled down due to the fast pace. Frapporti was riding well, and still had teammate Federico Canuti hanging on with him.

As the pressure was applied to the breakaway and the chasing peloton, Damiano Cunego (Lampre - ISD), ever the protagonist, attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/621.jpg
Cunego goes with around 20km left.

Cunego unleashed a blistering attack, and no one in the peloton dared to attempt following.

However, Cunego's move was a bit too early. There were enough helpers still in the field to cobble together a response. On the final descent before the final drag up to the line, the field was back together.

Canuti had just been dropped, so Frapporti got right behind Cunego's wheel, ready to respond to any move.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/622.jpg
Frapporti in Cunego's wheel at the front.

While Frapporti may have been in position, he, and the rest of the riders once again had no answer for the rampant Cunego. Riding in his home province, Cunego, for the second time today, accelerated at a pace no one could touch.

He easily took the win, 40 seconds ahead of the field!

Ivan Basso (Liquigas - Cannondale), who was very quiet today, out-sprinted the rest of the field for 2nd, while Frapporti, thanks to good positioning, grabbed third.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/623.jpg
Cunego left everyone in the dust.
