Compiegne - Roubaix : 269.3km

Today is the biggest day of the year for the likes of Cancellara and Vansummeren and the eyes will very much be on them today in their efforts to take victory in the Roubaix velodrome.

Ballan and Leukemans will miss out through injury. Vansummeren is without the support of Hushovd and Haussler who obviously have different goals this year. Gilbert has also decided against racing.

2008 Winner
Tom Boonen

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/vansummeren-1.jpg
Nuyens, Devolder,Eisel and Bak were all victims of early crashes whilst Pozzato suffered a puncture. They all made it back to the pack before Vansummeren suffered a scare with a crash 77km from the finish but his Garmin team brought him back up.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/burghardt-1.jpg
Burghardt was the first to attack 65km from the finish but was brought back 10km later.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/cancellaraattack.jpg
With 50km to go Cancellara made his move and Tjallingii was quick to follow. But they also failed to establish a solid lead.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/thomas-1.jpg
And then at 40km Geraint Thomas made his move with O'Grady, Rast and Boonen. However they are brought back by the chasing group of now around 15 riders.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/vansummerenattack-1.jpg
With 25km to go Vansummeren made his move and looked a little more decisive. Cancellara, Tjallingii and Chavanel all marked him.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/cancellaratjallingii.jpg
Whilst Vansummeren and Chavanel faded, Cancellara and Tjallingii went on ahead. They had built up a lead of 1 minute to Vansummeren with just 17km to go.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/flecha.jpg
But yet again the chasers responded. Flecha was first to bridge the gap across and the other favourites weren't far behind.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/attackagain.jpg
But as the chasers bore down on them Cancellara kicked once more. Tjallingii did his best to follow.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/runin-1.jpg
But on the run-in Cancellara had opened up a slender lead on Tjallingii...

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/velodrome.jpg
...which he retained as the two of them entered the velodrome.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/trackrace.jpg
Tjallingii did his best to follow Cancellara but he just couldn't quite make his way onto the Swiss powerhouse's wheel.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/cancellaravictory.jpg
Cancellara held on to jubilantly take his second Paris - Roubaix victory.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/tjallingii-1.jpg
Tjallingii will have to make do for second.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/vansummeren3rd.jpg
Vansummeren rounded out the podium ahead of O'Grady, Thomas and Flecha. Two 2nd places and a 3rd place are great results to take away from the cobbled classics for the Belgian but he will no doubt be disappointed to have missed out on the top step of the podium.

Ahh disaster! After the export failed and crashed the game I reloaded it only to find that the game had simmed Paris - Roubaix with totally different results!

I'm in the process of cleaning up the Top Tour rankings but does anyone knows how to edit the race palmares (with Hannes converter)?

EDIT: Things seem to get messy with palmares and it isn't crucial anyway. I've re-written the Top Tour as it should have been based on the original results. For future classics I'll either type out the results or screenshot the results to avoid this happening again.

Just a short race report for the Gold Race - I'm feeling a bit tired after the cobbled classics and fixing up a few things with the database. I'm also keen to get onto the Grand Tours.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/evans.jpg
Evans jumped the gun early and rode across to the breakaway but he didn't have the legs to follow his attack through. A dissapointing day for him, finishing 78th in the end.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/gerrans.jpg
Gerrans attacked the front group on the penultimate climb but Gilbert wasn't far behind.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/runin-2.jpg
Gilbert caught up with him on the flat and the two approached the finish line together.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-5.jpg
But Gerrans didn't stand a chance against the powerful Belgian who will be looking to carry his form onto the remaining Ardennes classics.

Charleroi - Huy : 201.7km

It's the second of the Ardennes classics and Gilbert will no doubt be looking to win again and perhaps set up a chance at the triple.

The startlist is very similar to the Amstel Gold Race with Evans, Rodriguez, Contador, Valverde and Gerrans all present.

Strong pacemaking from Katusha and Silence-Lotto saw a group of 42 riders head into the last 10km together at the front. Kroon was the first to have a go but didn't get anywhere.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/5km-1.jpg
And neither could anyone else although the peleton was halved on the run in to the finish. It was going to be decided on the final climb. Gilbert wasn't looking strong, sitting at the back of the pack.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finalkm.jpg
Going into the final kilometre Gadret, Gerrans, Pellizotti and Kroon were at the front of the group.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/gerrans-1.jpg
Gerrans was looking the strongest as they went round the final bends to the summit.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-6.jpg
...And he held on to take a surprise win for Sky to add to his second place in the Gold Race. He'll certainly be a contender for Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Pellizotti and Nocentini denied Gilbert a podium place.

Liege - Bastogne - Liege

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-34.jpg
Liege - Liege : 262.1km

2008 Winner
Alejandro Valverde

There are tons of strong riders at the start line. True climbers such as Armstrong, the Schleck brothers and Contador join the likes of Gilbert, Vinokourov and Samuel Sanchez. But the likes Gerrans and Pellizotti have shown good form recently and so it should be interesting to see the final outcome of today.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/break-9.jpg
Silence-Lotto were keen to control the peleton for Gilbert and it took well over 100km of racing for a successful break to form. Clement and Ardila joined Irish champion Martin and 7th placed at Fleche Wallone, John Gadret.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/kolobnevevans.jpg
Soon after Kolobnev made an early move and Evans joined him.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/VDB.jpg
As they built up a two minute advantage, Van den Broeck attacked and was later joined by Jeanesson but they are eventually brought back, and with 38km to go the pack is back together again.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/gilbert2.jpg
At the 25km mark Gilbert makes his move.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/gilbertdescent.jpg
Vinokourov, Rodriguez and Kroon are the first to respond but Gilbert opens up a gap on the descent.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/chase-1.jpg
Frank Schleck leads the chase behind but with 15km to go Gilbert has a lead of over a minute.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/gilbert3.jpg
On the penultimate climb Gilbert still has 1'15 back to a group of Frank Schleck, Tony Martin, Gerrans and Rodriguez.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/gerrans-2.jpg
The finish line was just about in sight for Gilbert but then Fleche Wallone winner Gerrans attacked and began to cut back Gilbert's advantage.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/flammerouge.jpg
But Gilbert recovered on the descent and it looked like he was going to hang on as he passed under the flamme rouge.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-7.jpg
And indeed the Belgian champion held on to take his second victory in the Ardennes classics.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/gerrans2nd.jpg
Gerrans crossed the line second to cap off a surprisingly good Spring classics season for him with 2nd places at Amstel and Liege - Bastogne - Liege and a victory at Fleche Wallone for the Australian.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/3rd.jpg
Andy Schleck sprinted accross the line to take 3rd ahead of Kroon, Rodriguez and Martin whilst his brother took 7th.

Cya Top Tour Rankings
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/toptour.jpg

Chavanel retains his lead over Cancellara with his win at Van Vlaaderen but Gilbert is bearing down on them after his successful Ardennes campaign. Other classicists move up in the rankings such as Vansummeren and Tjallingii.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/toptourteam.jpg

Cancellara has propelled Milram to the top of the team rankings whilst Gerrans' performances have helped to moved Sky-Cervelo into second ahead of Rabobank. At the bottom Fuji - Servetto are really struggling and will need to rely on Menchov and Sastre in the Grand Tours if they wish to avoid relegation...

Continental Tour Rankings
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/continental.jpg
The Chavanel brothers are both doing well in their respective divsions with Sebastian trailing only young team-mate Pierre Rolland in terms of points in the Continental Tour.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/continentalteam.jpg

And so it's no surprise to see BBOX at the top of the team standings. Besson and Landbouwkrdiet have both started the season well and trail BBOX in second and third. Meanwhile both Francaise des Jeux and Cofidis are under-performing and are nowhere to be seen in the top 10.

Injuries
Ballan and Leukemans are still unable to race after their injuries, whilst another cobbled classicist, Tom Boonen has fractured his hip and will be out until the end of June. Daniel Navarro Garcia, one of Contador's strongest domestiques, will be out until the end of May but will hope to regain his fitness to help Contador at Le Tour.

Other News
The teams for the Supergiro di Italia have been announced with Barloworld, Acqua Sapone and Serramenti PVC snapping up the available wild cards and they will compete against the 18 Top Tour teams in the first Grand Tour of the year.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/sicard.jpg

Meanwhile multiple teams have been announcing their interests in some of cycling's most promising talents. Indeed some have already offered professional contracts to some young riders. Columbia have signed promising time-trialist Tejay van Garderen, Saxo Bank have snapped up Australian stage racer Richie Porte, whilst Frenchman Romain Sicard will become Euskaltel's first ever non-Spanish rider after the youngster was invited to join the Basque set-up.

As we head into March the Grand Tour season awaits, but first we take a trip to Switzerland for the GP de Romandie.

I decided not to have my story affiliated with "Team Eurosport" any more because I think it was making things a little confusing considering I only really used them to present the introduction and then they have since been nowhere to be seen.

So I've mutually come to an agreement with Eurosport to terminate the team contract, and I've taken the chance to update the intro. Don't worry, all the riders will continue riding under the guise of a more neutral control team. The Livestrong organistion has kindly agreed a low-budget contract for official sponsorship of the team to pay the riders and staff.

Meanwhile I'm quite happy with how the story is coming along although I realise the "no team-PCM09" combination maybe doesn't appeal to all. At least I can say that this is just about the furthest I've got into a career before haha.

2008 Winner
Andreas Kloden

Andy Schleck and Cadel Evans headline the startlist and with the grand tours looming you would expect them to be in good shape and contending for the overall win. Liquigas have brought Nibali and Astana's leader is Brajkovic, whilst all three of the young riders signed last month (van Garderen, Sicard and Porte) make their first major outings for their teams.

This year's route begins with a prologue in Laussane and then the route gets lumpy, including a 15km team time trial on stage 4 followed by a officially mountainous stage the next day.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/evans-1.jpg
But Evans was the fastest man on the day with a time of 9'43 and takes the leader's jersey.

Stage 2
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-36.jpg
Montreux - Fribourg : 176.6km

The game says that today's stage is flat although the profile seems to suggest otherwise, with a pretty tough climb at 104km and then a chance for attacks at 15km to go. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Linus Gerdemann found himself dropped off the back of the peloton on the first climb of the day. His 5th place yesterday suggested that it was a bad case of misjudgement from the German and not a fitness issue. He made his way back up anyway.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/ignatiev.jpg
Escapees Ignatiev, Mol and Reda crossed the top of the main climb together. Most of the sprinters just about clung onto the peleton over the climb.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/sprint-9.jpg
The break was caught and as the sprint began Rollin, Kirchen and Colom were at the front of the group. Goss and Petacchi were on the wheel of Sutton.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/kirchen-1.jpg
But the sprinters soon faded after a tiring day and Kirchen bursted through with Colom on his wheel.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/colom-1.jpg
Colom came round him to take the win.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/sicard-2.jpg
Cuesta, van Garderen and Sicard were all victims of late crashes and lost time.

Stage 3
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-38.png
La Chaux-de-Fonds - La Chaux-de-Fonds : 162.4km

We could potentially see the first attacks from the favourites today with the multiple late climbs.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/break-10.jpg
Having both lost time yesterday, Moncoutie and Porte joined the days break but they were all eventually reeled back in by the peloton.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/larsson-1.jpg
7th placed Gustav Larsson attacked with 50km to go and spurred on a few other attacks but no-one could open up a gap.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/rujano-1.png
Larsson again kicked off more futile attacks on the penultimate climb. Ukraine champion Pidgornyy was the only rider to open up a gap, and Rujano then responded on the descent. Nothing came of it.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/rujano2.jpg
Rujano tried to get away on the descent again with Cobo on the final climb.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/nibali-2.jpg
Nibali set of after him and passed him on the way down.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/brajkovic-2.png
Brajkovic, Pellizotti and Larsson all set of in pursuit of Nibali who was riding solo with 4km left after some daredevil descending.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/liquigas-1.jpg
Nibali opened up the sprint... with his team mate Pelizotti not far behind.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/sprint-10.jpg
Nibali still led as they went around the final bend...

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-8.png
And held on to the line to make a Liquigas 1-2! Although they weren't accredited with a time gap to the depleted peloton, Nibali takes the leader's jersey by virtue of bonifications.

Yverdon-les-Bains - Yverdon-les-Bains : 14.8km

It's time for the short team time trial before we head into the mountains tommorow... on paper, the best time-trialing squad is Caisse d'Epargne with Gutierrez, Bruseghin, Kiryienka and Pereiro.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/caisse-1.png
But next up are the favourites, Caisse, who go three seconds better at 17'46 with a great ride.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/milram-1.png
Milram - Trek : +10 (3rd)

The GC takes a reshuffle as Gutierrez reclaims the leader's jersey, but Evans, Schleck, Nibali and Brajkovic all find themselves in the top 10 with 2 stages to go.

Stage 5
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-40.jpg
Estavayer-le-Lac - Sainte-Croix : 157.9km

Gutierrez goes into the queen stage wearing the yellow jersey but is surely unlikely to keep it as Evans is only 3 seconds behind him. Andy Schleck will be out looking for time on Evans today as he is 16 seconds back on the Australian after the time trials.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/kirchen-2.jpg
Kirchen attacked at the top of the penultimate climb and Larsson responded. Both were hauled back.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/break-11.jpg
A break containing Moncoutie, Chris Anker Sorensen and polka dot jersey Bertogliati reached the foot of the final climb with a lead of 3'40.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/brajkovic-3.jpg
Brajkovic started off the attacks.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/vandevelde.jpg
Vandevelde was next to go.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/evans-2.jpg
Evans then made his move. Schleck and Nibali countered.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/schleck-1.jpg
Schleck attacked again with 1km to the summit.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/sorensen.jpg
Sorensen crossed the top alone with 1'33 back to Schleck.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/schleck2.jpg
Evans was brought back by the pack but Schleck had around 1' with 10km to go. Nibali was 20 seconds back on him.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/nibali-3.jpg
Nibali was able to catch Schleck on the descent.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-9.jpg
Sorensen just managed to hold on and took the stage win ahead of Schleck and Nibali.

A depleted pack came across the line over a minute down on Schleck and Nibali which gives Schleck the leader's jersey 3 seconds ahead of the Italian.

Stage 6
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-41.jpg
Aubonne - Geneve : 150.9km

Just 3 seconds separate Schleck and Nibali as we head into the final stage. The run-in is flat, but Nibali has to have a go if he wants the overall victory.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/break-12.jpg
A big group of 17 riders formed at the front which included the likes of Sicard, Mollema and Porte.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/brajkovic-4.jpg
Nibali must have been content with second as he didn't try anything on the main climb. Brajkovic attacked with 20km to go but seemed unlikely to get anywhere.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/gutierrez-1.jpg
5km later there were more attacks, with 3rd placed Gutierrez and 9th placed Zubeldia getting involved in the action.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/evans-3.jpg
Evans and Bruseghin also got involved with 10km to go. Bruseghin was the most successful out of all the attackers, riding his way up to the remaining escapees. Innfact, amidst all the attacks Bruseghin had ridden into the provisional lead out of nowhere! Milram frantically lead the late chase.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-10.jpg
Shpilevsky comfortably settled the sprint out of the escapees with Bruseghin coming with them in 5th. Milram had upped the tempo behind but it was going to be a close call...

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/schleck-2.jpg
Schleck arrived home... and despite finishing a full kilometre behind Bruseghin, the sheer number of late attackers and escapees inbetween had ended up classifying them all as one big group. Schleck takes the win but surely has to be very thankful for that 17 man break which probably ended up deciding the overall winner.

It's time for the first grand tour of my story which I'm really happy about Smile

2008 Winner
Alberto Contador

We have an interesting route which includes a team time trial on stage 1, two mountain top finishes in the first week and a long hilly 63.4km time trial on stage 12. The race concludes in Rome with another, 17.3km long, time trial.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/EXTRA%20PCM%20STUFF/pink.png Overall Contenders

Ivan Basso (Liquigas)
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/basso.jpg
Basso stands out as the favourite on paper for the win whilst most of the main stage racers seem to be opting for the Tour or the Vuelta. Basso definitely has what it takes to win here.

Damiano Cunego (Lampre - N.G.C)
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/cunego.jpg
The arrival of Cunego at the start line could make things interesting. We could end up seeing a two-way battle between Liquigas and Lampre for their home race.

Danilo Di Luca (LPR Brakes Farnese Vini)
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/diluca.jpg
Di Luca perhaps isn't quite of the quality of Basso or Cunego but if he plays his cards right he could be in with a shout for the victory and will be aiming for at least the 3rd podium place.

Vicenzo Nibali (Liquigas)
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/nibali-4.jpg
Basso's team-mate Nibali is perhaps the most complete stage racer out of the starting field. He will be riding in support of Basso but nonetheless should have his own opportunities to race for the podium.

Other Contenders
Luis Leon Sanchez (Rabobank)
Rigoberto Uran (Sky-Cervelo)
Nicolas Roche (AG2R La Mondiale)
Michele Scarponi (Lampre - N.G.C)
Christian Vandevelde (Garmin - Slipstream)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/EXTRA%20PCM%20STUFF/red.png Main Sprinters
Filippo Pozzato (Team Katusha)
Alberto Loddo (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni)
Borut Bozic (Vacansoleil)
Nikolai Trussov (Team Katusha)

Pozzato will be aiming to take the points jersey home against this field. He has the best abilities and the best support in the form of young Trussov but it might not be enough to fend off the climbers and puncheurs.

Stage 1
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-43.jpg
Lido di Venezia : 20.4km

We begin the Giro with a team time trial. Katusha are favoured to win.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/0alm.jpg
AG2R La Mondiale : +38 (9th)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/1liq.jpg
Liquigas were out early but Basso and Nibali will be dissapointed with the time. +19 (6th)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/3qst.jpg
A good time trial from Quick Step.
+16 (4th)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/4ast.jpg
Astana may not have a GC contender but they were still out showing their class with a good time.
+2 (3rd)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/5rab.jpg
Rabobank : +16 (5th)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/6lam.jpg
Lampre set a good time at 25'12. Cunego will be pleased with that.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/8mrm.jpg
Milram - Trek : +27 (7th)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/htc.jpg
Columbia - High Road : +47 (10th)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/10kat.jpg
Favourites Katusha didn't look great at the checkpoint, but pulled it back together in the second half.
+1 (2nd)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/11sky.jpg
Sky-Cervelo : +31 (8th)

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/12lpr.jpg
LPR : + 1'26 (17th)
That's a lot of time for Di Luca to lose after just one stage.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/13grm.jpg
Garmin then came round and smashed the best time at the first checkpoint by 10 seconds... and then totally collapsed in the later parts of the course to finish 14th, handing the win to Lampre, and the leader's jersey to Scarponi.

Stage 2
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-44.jpg
Jesolo - Trieste : 154.5km

The first chance for the sprinters. Pozzato will be looking for the win.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/break-13.jpg
All three Masciarelli brothers are in this year's race for Acqua Sapone. Simone and Andrea joined the day's break.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/pozzatocrash.jpg
Pozzato was involved in a crash with 75km to go along with Le Mevel. It took them almost 30km to get back to the peloton. Barton was so angry to crash he even gave his bike a good kick up the wheel.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/sprint1-1.jpg
Indeed Pozzato must have been tired from that effort as he was nowhere to be seen at the final sprint. Capecchi led Fischer who had Roelandts on his wheel.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/sprint2-2.jpg
Roelandts tried to jump early but Fischer responded powerfully and took the win.

Thanks to his 4th place Gasparotto takes the pink jersey from his team mate without bonifications. One man who did take bonifications was Fischer who now is on the same overall time as Gasparotto.

Stage 3
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-47.jpg
Grado - Valdobbiadene : 197km

Today's stage is flat but with an uphill finish. That's unlikely to faze Pozzato though - infact it probably gives him an extra advantage today.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/pichot.jpg
Pichot rode alone at the front for much of the day but stood no chance against the might of the peloton.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/chavanel-5.jpg
Sylvain Chavanel decided to launch a surprise attack with 57km to go.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/chavanel2-1.jpg
And found himself with over 2 minutes on the peloton, with just 10km left to ride.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-11.jpg
The peleton increased the pace but Chavanel held on to deny the sprinters with yet another solo victory (after his exploits at Van Vlaanderen and Paris-Nice). The pink jersey of Gasparotto lead the sprint behind across the line. Pozzato was nowhere to be seen again, he crashed again late on.

In recognition of his efforts Chavanel takes the magalia rosa. He certainly seems to be having quite a season both in terms of stage races and the classics.

Stage 4
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-48.jpg
Padova - San Martino di Castrozza : 167.4km

We already hit the mountains on the fourth stage. Today we should get an idea of who is in good form this year, and who isn't.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/uran.jpg
With 24km Uran and Le Mevel sprinted away from the pack.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/rujano-2.jpg
Rujano was next at 14km but he got nowhere.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/basso-1.jpg
Surprisingly Basso was leading the pack onwards. Perhaps he was the one riding in support of Nibali?

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/vandevelde-1.jpg
Vandevelde made his move at 11km and Uran tried to cling onto his wheel.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/vanendert-2.jpg
Vanendert soon followed.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/diluca-1.jpg
Nobody was able to really get anywhere with Basso setting the tempo behind but then Di Luca sprung out the pack and raced on ahead of everyone else.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/cunego-1.jpg
Cunego countered.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/nibali-5.jpg
And that set Nibali and then Scarponi off. Basso remained with the pack.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/cunego2.jpg
Bang! Just as everyone was coming back together with 3km to go, the Little Prince was off again. This looked dangerous.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-12.jpg
Cunego powered away and held on masterfully to take the win and the Magalia Rosa.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/basso3.jpg
Nibali led Paulinho, Sanchez, Vandevelde and Di Luca over the line just behind Cunego and 39 seconds ahead of Basso. He clearly isn't in great shape.

Stage 5
i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/profile-49.jpg
San Martino di Castrozza - Alpe di Siusi : 129.4km

A short but interesting stage. We begin with a short climb up Paso Rolle, before 90km of descending / flat. We finish with a long, difficult climb up the Alpe di Siusi.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/break-15.jpg
The day's break: Hoj, Lagutin, Stadler, Claude, Hansen and Hermans. They reach the foot of the climb with a 5 minute advantage but failed to make it count.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/diluca-2.jpg
Di Luca went for the early attack at 27km and opened up a one minute gap.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/karpets.jpg
It was good to see Karpets on the offensive as he set off after Di Luca.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/nibali-6.jpg
Nibali attacked at 20km on the flat and made his way up to the duo.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/nibali2.jpg
Nibali soon began to pull away from Di Luca and Karpets.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/vandevelde-2.jpg
Back in the pack, Vandevelde was on the attack.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/attacks-1.jpg
With 9km to go Paulinho, Uran, Basso, Cunego, Sanchez were all attacking.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/cunego-2.jpg
With 6km to go Nibali had over a minute on Vandevelde. Cunego wasn't far behind after passing a fading Di Luca.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/groupemagiliarosa.jpg
Cunego made his way up to Vandevelde soon after but Nibali was storming ahead in the background.

i1191.photobucket.com/albums/z463/stevenccc/finish-13.jpg
Nibali had plenty time to celebrate his victory, finishing 43 seconds ahead of Cunego who dropped Vandevelde towards the finish. Uran came in 4th, Di Luca took 5th whilst Nibali takes the magalia rosa.

Basso finished well down again and looks out of the running already. Vandevelde is doing well in 3rd place.
