Prologue
Amily : 9.7km
Today starts the race with a prologue in Amily. Although the results today are unlikely to be detrimental to the final G.C., the first leader's jersey is up for grabs.

Alejandro Valverde was the first rider out... the usually punchy Spanish rider hasn't quite seemed himself so far this year after a reputed raid on his house during the off-season... In the background, last year's runner-up Rinaldo Nocentini awaits his start-count.
David Zabriskie was also out early in his national champion's attire and set the bar high with a great ride... would it hold?
Frenchmen Sylvain Chavanel and Jerome Coppel both put out respectable times before it was the turn of Saxo Bank's Alberto Contador. However he had an unspectacular time-trial, finishing 9th at +16 seconds.
David Zabriskie's early time held strong to win him the prologue and the race's first leader's jersey. Well done to him!

Stage 2
St-Brisson-sur-Loire - La Chapelle St-Ursin : 195.9km
Next up are two days for the sprinters. Infact they will be the only two chances for the sprinters before the route starts to get lumpy. After tomorrow the likes of Farrar, Rojas & Feillu might aswell pack their bags and head home so they will certainly be hoping to make their few opportunities count.

Race Report
Sapa of Lampre, Mortentsen of Vacansoleil and Roulston of Sky-Cervelo were out on escapee duty today. Sapa lead the other two over both the categorised climbs to take the polka-dot jersey. Roulston eventually made his way back up to Sapa but the break was never going to work today.
With 56km to go there were late attacks from Muravyev, Nuyens, Tjallingii & Terpstra which looked potentially threatening at one point but Caisse d'Epargne pulled them back for Rojas' sake.
Disaster struck for Liquigas at 5km to go as their leader Ivan Basso went down. Fortunately he got back on his bike but then co-leaders Nibali and Pellizotti dropped back to help him and they all ended up losing 2'43 on the peleton. A very disappointing day for the Liquigas boys.
Up front the sprinters were lining up. On the left Kirchen leads Goss whilst on the right Rojas has taken up Steegmans' wheel.
Koldo Fernandez jumps early off Goss' wheel on the left but Tyler Farrar has managed to wing his way into Rojas' slipsteam...
Farrar jumps out from behind Rojas and storms to the line to make it two out of two for Garmin-Slipstream at Paris - Nice! Goss takes second ahead of Fernandez and Rojas.

The last chance for the sprinters... After having quite a bit of fun doing my first main race report from California I think I'll tone down my technique a little & try to be a bit more succinct in my reports now.

A big break of 17 riders got away including 3 BMC riders but they never looked threatening. Rojas was well poised for the sprint with Haedo on his wheel whilst Koldo Fernandez had been positioned well by his team mate.
Rojas and Haedo sprinted away from the others and Haedo looked to come around Rojas' wheel...
They were neck-and-neck as they approached the finish line...
...But Rojas took the win and the green jersey. In other news, AG2R leader John Gadret pulled up at the side of the road with a broken shin bone despite not seeming to be involved in any crashes.

3rd placed Linus Gerdemann took an early tumble but made it back into the pack. Don't worry, our team car managed to avoid him as he lay on the road.
With 70km still to ride, Nibali, Tjallingii and Nocentini made early attacks. Moreno of Caisse d'Epargne followed them.
Tjallingii went on ahead and went past the day's break but ran out of gas and was caught with 16km left.
Zandio and Vanendert were first to attack on the last climb and were followed by Camano and Scarponi.
The yellow jersey of Zabriskie followed suite but Vanendert of Silence-Lotto and Carrara of Vacansoleil crossed the top first.
On the short descent / run-in, Zabriskie found himself with Tschopp, 13 seconds back on a group of Pereiro, Popovych, Carrara and Vanendert. The peleton trailed the yellow jersey by 35 seconds.
Carrara took the sprint for Vacansoleil but Zabriskie crossed the line behind in 5th place and just did enough to be accredited the same time as the leaders. He defends his jersey ahead of Popovych and Pereiro.

Stage 5
Annonnay - Vallon Pont d'Arc : 204.6km
It is hard to tell what will happen today... in theory the finish suits the sprinters but they have to get over the early climbs. It could also be a day for the break.
The polka-dot jersey of Sapa was out in the break along with Franco Pellizoti of Liquigas. Pellizoti ended up nicking the jersey from Sapa by the end of the day.
The first attacks began with 35km to go when Popovych, Tschopp and Carrara all attacked...
And then the so-far quiet Contador decided to show his face with an attack. He ended up spurring on a massive flurry of attacks that lasted for over 10kms, with most of the race favourites involved.
Eventually once the attacks settled down, Chavanel was up front with the remaining escapees, one minute ahead of the Groupe Maillot Jaune which also contained Contador, Luis Leon Sanchez, Tschopp and Coppel.
But meanwhile Rabobank's Stef Clement had opened up a gap of 1 minute on his breakaway companions and was heading into the last few kilometres in search of the win.
And he managed to hold on for the stage victory for Rabobank.
Muravyev beat Chavanel across the line to take second place but Chavanel will wear yellow tommorow.

Stage 6
St-Paul Trois Chateaux - La Montagne de Lure : 182.9km
Today is the most crucial stage for those seeking to do well in the general classification. Chavanel is well positioned but Zabriskie can also climb well. However the best climbers such as Contador, Vanendert and Rolland are all down by over a minute on Chavanel so they must make today count. Liquigas' Ivan Basso is well down on the standings but the terrain suits him and he could look for a stage win today.
Franco Pellizotti was out attacking again today and defended his polka dot jersey by taking all of the mountain sprints.
Vanendert was the first to attack with 26km to go, but he wasn't given much leeway by the peleton.
With 12km left, Pereiro, Rolland, Nocentini and Coppel all attacked and soon flew past Vanendert aswell as Pellizotti and his breakaway compatriots.
At 6km to go Contador makes his move. Zabriskie, Popovych, Sanchez and Gerdemann are the first to respond.
And 1km later it is the Maillot Jaune of Chavanel who jumps out of the pack in hot pursuit.
But meanwhile, Rolland, Coppel, Pereiro and Carrara have formed a leading quartet and have over a minute back to Contador.
Chavanel battles on and has Contador in his sights as the sprint kicks off up front.
Rolland takes a great win for BBOX and he may have also taken the leader's jersey in the process...?
Contador comes in exactly one minute behind Rolland. Chavanel sprints past Vanendert for 6th place but is forced to sacrifice his leader's jersey to Rolland by just 3 seconds.

Paris - Nice
Stage 7
Manosque - Fayence 191.4km
Today's route is hilly with an uphill finish... we can expect to see the G.C. contenders out to challenge Rolland today.
We saw some strong riders amongst the escapees today - G.C. disappointments Rigoberto Uran and Christian Vandevelde were out front with Kolobnev.
There were multiple early but ultimately futile attacks involving the likes of Tschopp and Nibali before Vanendert made a move on the day's main climb, followed by Luis Leon Sanchez and Franco Pellizotti. But that move also failed to work out.
On the descent Contador and Rolland along with Pereiro decided to have a pop and surprisingly opened up something of a gap.
With 7km to go, Rolland, Contador, Pereiro, Efimkin joined escapees Uran and Kolobnev. They had 20 seconds back to a group containing Chavanel, Popovych and Szmyd.
However they soon all came together and it wasn't long before Chavanel was out on the attack.
Contador began to struggle on the run in and was relying on the pacemaking of Kolobnev.
Meanwhile Popovych had made his way up to Chavanel and was leading the duo into the sprint ahead of the Groupe Maillot Jaune.
But as Chavanel came around Popovych, Rolland was coming up fast behind the two.
Chavanel held on for the win. Popovych, Rolland and Pereiro all came in at the same time as him but time bonifications move Chavanel ahead of Rolland by just a single second with one stage left.
Meanwhile Contador aswell as 3rd & 4th placed Carrara and Coppel were the day's losers, all losing time.

Paris - Nice
Stage 8
Nice - Nice 131.5km
The final stage of Paris - Nice mightn't be the hilliest of the lot but it could be the most exciting. With race leader Sylvain Chavanel holding just a slender 1 second lead over Pierre Roland, everything is up for grabs today.
Nuyens attacked with Scarponi mid-way through the stage in search of a stage win. Pauriol soon joined them as they made their way up to the break.
20km to go and Chavanel attacked yet again on the final climb.
Rolland and Popovych followed him as he made his way up to the remaining escapees.
Pereiro was the next to go...
...and managed to make his way up to Chavanel as they crossed the top.
Meanwhile Rolland was struggling 40 seconds back with the likes of Popovych, Carrara and Gerdemann.
Pereiro had a poor descent and was caught by Gerdemann on the way down, but Chavanel was getting away from them.
Chavanel was looking set for the overall victory as he rode into Nice alone.
And he takes back-to-back stage wins to clinch Paris - Nice after some great riding.
Pereiro lead Gerdemann over the line whilst Voigt, Popovych and De Weert were given the same time as them behind. But that is enough to see Pereiro into 2nd place overall as Carrara led a depleted peleton including a dissapointed Rolland home 1'43 behind.

A French victory at Paris - Nice and you have to say Chavanel deserved it after his performances in the last two stages. He would have definitely taken a super-combativity award if one was awarded too. Pereiro and Rolland rounded out the podium but Contador may be a little dissapointed with 6th place.
Points Classification
1 Sylvain Chavanel QUICK STEP 112
2 Oscar Pereiro CAISSE D'EPARGNE 90
3 Yaroslav Popovych ASTANA 84
4 Matteo Carrara VACANSOLEIL PRO CYCLING TEAM 69
5 Pierre Rolland BBOX - BOUYGUES TELECOM 66
Another award for Chavanel in recognition of his consistent high placings aswell as his 2 stage wins. The sprinters didn't stand a chance for green on such a lumpy route.
Mountains Classification
1 Franco Pellizotti LIQUIGAS 50
2 Nico Sijmens COFIDIS - LE CREDIT EN LIGNE 38
3 Rigoberto Uran SKY-CERVELO PRO CYCLING 28
4 Christian Vandevelde GARMIN - SLIPSTREAM 26
5 Markus Zberg BMC RACING TEAM 23
Pellizotti took home the polka-dot jersey after his great ride out on the mountain stage where he took all the mountain sprints.
Youth Classification
1 Pierre Rolland BBOX - BOUYGUES TELECOM 32h07'32
2 Jérôme Coppel BESSON CHAUSSURES - SOJASUN + 1'56
3 Jelle Vanendert SILENCE-LOTTO + 2'48
Rolland won the white jersey after winning the mountain stage and taking yellow for a day. Coppel and Vanendert also rode well.
Team Classification
1 QUICK STEP 96h33'19
2 LIQUIGAS + 2'46

Tirreno - Adriatico
Of course Tirreno - Adriatico was also taking place in Italy whilst Chavanel was winning in France. It was Belgian cobbled classicist Stjin Devolder who took the win here. As well as Cancellara in 2nd place, many other cobbled classicists seemed in good shape here such as Thomas, Ballan and Hushovd.
General Classification
Gilbert took the mountains classifcation whilst Pozzato took the sprints classification ahead of Mark Cavendish. Thomas took the young riders jersey home. |

2008 Winner
Fabian Cancellara
The first cycling monument is here and it's the chance for the sprinters to shine. But the puncheurs will also be looking to steal the show on the late climbs, so any sprinter that is looking for victory needs to be able to climb well enough.
Favourites
World Champion Thor Hushovd would love to win Milan - San Remo in the rainbow jersey. Although he is not the fastest of the sprinters any more he can climb better than most of them which makes him race favourite.
Last year's winner is in fine shape having just finished second at Tirreno - Adriatico. "Spartacus" is the finest time-trialer in the peleton and will seek to use this ability to pull him away from the field to win again.
Pozzato is neither the best man in the hills nor the fastest in the sprints but his combined abilities could give him the upper edge on the competition on the day.
There is no doubt that the "Manx Missile" is the fastest man in the peleton when it comes to a bunch sprint, but on paper he is prone to either being dropped or losing his finishing power on the climbs. Nonetheless it is hard to discount him as a favourite.
Other Favourites
Edvald Boassen Hagen (Sky-Cervelo)
Phillipe Gilbert (Silence-Lotto)
Matti Breschel (Rabobank)
Juan Jose Rojas (Caisse d'Epargne)

The 5 hopeful escapees consisted of Kazakhstan champion Bazayev, Capecchi, Cataldo, Barla and Shpilevsky who got a maximum gap of 9 minutes before Columbia turned up the gas in the peleton.
With 41km to go Nuyens attacks and is joined by Tjallingii and Popovych.
The peleton manage to get over the climbs relatively unscathed. Haedo is the only sprinter dropped and none of the puncheurs attack. Tjallingii and Nuyens still hold a slim lead but are brought back on the final descent.
As a result of the fast descent a mass crash occurs wiping out Farrar, Feillu and Greipel amongst others.
The sprint train begins to form but there is a late attack from Rast which Ballan, Voigt and Chavanel all follow.
Ballan finds himself leading the sprint out ahead of Fletcha. Thomas does a great job to move Boassen Hagen to the front although he has Rojas on his wheel. Meanwhile, Cavendish, Hushovd and most the other sprinters have been caught out by the acceleration at the front.
Boassen Hagen looks poised to come around Thomas' wheel but Ballan has stormed away at the front with a great turn of pace.
Boassen Hagen is bearing down on Ballan but he is running out of road...
Ballan holds on to take the victory on home soil, followed over the line by Boassen Hagen and Rojas. Freire pips his team-mate Breschel to the line for 4th.

A relatively quiet Milan - San Remo where none of puncheurs bothered to have a shot on the climbs. The pre-race favourites failed to live up to expectations but Ballan's win will at least be popular with the Italian fans.

Hey, thanks dienblad.
I'm technically "Team Eurosport", but I'm just feeding the riders during the race and reporting the action up front so that's why you don't see my team |

News
Reports have been leaked that Cervelo were looking to withdraw their sponsorship from their Top Tour team, Sky-Cervelo. A Cervelo official announced this morning that "Cervelo had a 1 year contract to the team and have no intentions of terminating the said contract."
Meanwhile early season transfer rumours are beginning to take shape. Fuji - Servetto have declared an interest in Lampre's Damiano Cunego, whilst Silence-Lotto's team manager was announcing his praise for Spanish champion Juan Jose Rojas in the papers. Rabobank have also confirmed that they would love to have Milram - Trek's Andy Schleck on their team once his contract runs out at the end of the year, whilst Saxo Bank have announced that team leader Alberto Contador is "not up for sale and contract negotiations are in an advanced state."
Injuries
Bauke Mollema is currently out with a broken wrist whilst Vacansoleil's Bobbie Traksel and BBOX's Thomas Voeckler are both suffering from patellar tendon tears. It remains to be seen how Voeckler will reshuffle his season once he returns in May. John Gadret is still out with a broken shin bone.
However the big injuries woes are those of classicists Bjorn Leukemans (Vacansoleil) and Milan - San Remo winner Alessandro Ballan (BMC) who will both miss out on their favoured cobbled classics. |

Cobbled Classics
As previously mentioned, Allessandro Ballan and Bjorn Leukemans will miss the classics through injury. BMC will look towards the trio of Burghardt, Hincapie and Quinzato in place of Ballan whilst Devolder will take over for Vacansoleil.
Main Contenders
After a dissapointing Milan - San Remo, Cancellara will be looking to bounce back in the other classics, and is the favourite for any cobbled race he turns up to.
Vansummeren is another strongman in the cobbles and he has a very strong Garmin - Slipstream support in the form of Hushovd, Haussler and Maaskant.
Rabobank will be putting their forces behind Tjallingii and the dutchman will certainly be aiming for the top step of the podium during Spring.
Top Tour leader Sylvain Chavanel will be looking to add to his Paris - Nice victory, and boasts the support of the former world champion Tom Boonen.

Very nice round up. I liked it.
A pity for Ballan that he's injured, he seemed to be in good shape. And wow, Tjallingii is good in cobbles

Haha yes you might find that the cobbled stats are a bit unrealistic. I don't really know so much about the best classicists in reality but I wanted to give the database a more personal feel so I went ahead and altered a few guys based on the classic results this year.
I believe Tjallingii, Bak and Rast were all in a successful breakaway at Paris Roubaix this year so because of their results they have massively inflated stats but I think that's kind of interesting anyway lol.

GP Van Vlaanderen
Brugge - Meerbeke : 258.2km
The multiple short, steep climbs in this race suit both Chavanel and Gilbert. Fabian Cancellara was nowhere to be seen on the startline... he must be looking to go all out at Paris - Roubaix.

Vacansoleil lead the peleton onto the first cobbled section. In addition to the rain, the wind was also very strong to make matters worse for the riders.
Quick Step soon looked to take advantage of the crosswinds and jumped to the front of the peleton. Tjallingii, Thomas, O'Grady, Bak, Burghardt and Maaskant were all caught out but they all safely made their way back up to the front as the wind died down.
But Quick Step were out causing havoc again with 75km to go, dragging Chavanel and Steegmans up with several domestiques and gained a minutes advantage over the pack.
On the same descent Quick Step got away on, Thomas came down hard. He wasn't injured but his chances of a victory today were over. Burghardt punctured not long after and ended up riding to the line back with Thomas.
Keen to go alone, Chavanel attacked his own team mates with 60km to go. 10km later he had built up a gap of 2'30 on the other favourites.
Vansummeren attacked on a descent to try and claw back Chavanel alone.
Gilbert attacked over the top of the next climb in pursuit of Chavanel and Vansummeren. Bak, Langeveld and Devolder responded.
But Chavanel was racing away and still held a lead of 2'30 on Vansummeren with 30km to go. It looked as though he was heading towards another solo victory.
Chavanel cruised across the line in his Top Tour leader's jersey after a spectacular 60km solo ride and added another victory to his season tally.
Vansummeren was the next to cross the line, 3'15 down on Chavanel. Langeveld won the sprint for the final podium place ahead of Devolder, Gilbert and Tjallingii.

I've worked out that the export results button doesn't work for any one day races. I can retrieve the results but it's a bit of a pain. Just in the off-chance that anyone knows a fix for this?

The race was relatively quiet until the final climb where the pack eventually separated. A group of 21 riders were out in front including the likes of Boonen, Thomas and Eisel.
But with 13km to go Cancellara opened up the attacks with Thomas, Vansummeren, Bak, Devolder and Tjallingii.
As the dust settled, Bak, Tjallingii and Vansummeren had opened up a 30 second gap at the front of the race.
They were joined on the run in by Maaskant and Burghardt, but the rest of the chasing group weren't far behind.
The sprint opened up and it was Bak who jumped out from behind Vansummeren and Tjallingii...
...And he opened up quite a big gap on the others and attempted to steamroller his way to the line...
He held on to take a surprise victory for Columbia. Vansummeren has to settle for second again whilst Cancellara sprinted over the line for third.
