I have an interesting question and I want to know what people think about it. Recently, my Dad, a former sub 3-hour marathoner, who is now injured and in bad shape, was asked if, by doping, he could get back into shape and start running again, would he do it? So I thought I'd pose a similar question here. If you could make it as a successful professional athlete, in any sport, but you had to cheat in some manner, for instance doping, would you do it?
I understand that talking about it hypothetically is nothing like the real thing. But really think about it.
I'll kick it off by saying that I don't think I would. I have very few principles, but one of them is that I do not cheat. I never steal a look at another person's test, I never cut corners, etc., etc. In addition, I'm somewhat of a loner (you surprised?) so I really am not susceptible to peer pressure. So to be honest I don't think I would. But I want to know what other people think.
additional note: this has no connection to the topic, but I'm watching Star Wars III and it really sucks |

It's difficult to vote in this.
If everyone 'cheats', then it's not 'cheating', whether you talk about doping in cycling or simulation in football. |

Basicaly no.
I think that no one starts a sport wanting to cheat from the very begining or thinking that he will ever do that. But you can meet some people that could make you do that, or you just see that someone is cheating and he is always better than you, though that in normal condition you will be over him and you could take something just to prove that you are better than him.
And Star Wars sucks.

I would consider "cheating" to be doing something illegal with the express purpose of improving your performance.
Bodily enhancements only though, as technology spreads quickly and helps everyone. |

I agree on both points
That said, I'm not asking you if you would start with the idea that you would, I'm asking you, if you needed to to make that final step to professionalism, would you? I don't think any cyclists start thinking they will dope (except maybe Ricco) but many of them end up doing just that. |

If cheating was required to win, yes, no doubt. |

I wouldn't say win, but to maintain a high level of professionalism, with winning as a goal |

It also depends what you want to win, I think that you can win some races or even stages in GTs(after brekaways or something) being clean but nothing more.

Given the climate in sports over the last few years, and the fact that there are athletes winning and getting he contracts that you or I should have earned- Yes, I would. I read a quote from a great classics rider from the early 90's, he said he knew first hand that the second and third placed riders had doped, so he won on a level plying field. The problem has so permeated society and sports that for most of the fringe athletes that were close to making it, they now have to chose between not making or "cheating". I think many people, especially in cycling would not admit to it , but in private would absolutely dope. |

I remember when I was in 8. grade, I wanted to be in the cool gang when someone offered med a cigarette. If I wanted to be in that gang, I had to smoke. I turned down the offer, so I guess I would've done that if someone offered me drugs too. |

Thats ridiculous, that after years of training to the point where you were on the brink of making it to be able to switch sports. |

I wouldn't cheat. I don't think you need to cheat in order to do well in cycling. I don't think i would take any satisfaction from results that were a result of cheating, which defeats the purpose of racing.

I'm a clear no, a very easy no because I have already seen that I can make it good in my sport, so it is possible to become good/best without cheat |

Every rider who ever admits doping is rampant always says the same "When I was young I was sure I'd never dope and I'd never need to........then I joined the professionals".
Because that's when they realized they were full of bullshit when they thought they could win clean.
The choice isn't to dope or not to dope. It's to dope or to go do something else for a living.

I think there are a lot of professional cyclist who are clean, but if they want a lot of good results then they have to dope.
I don't know that doping is equal to cheating. Every cyclist who is outspoken about doping practices - when he is banned - never get a good contract again.
I would modify the question a little bit:
If you could make it as a successful professional athlete, but you had to dope with an untraceable drug, would you do it? So you can't be caught for years. Because it was the case with EPO for 6-8 years.
I think it depends on your skills too, because I would not dope to be an average guy in the peloton, but I would dope to win the Tour.
