 Copenhagen-Malmo TTT
For a third straight edition, it’s raining here in Scandinavia and, spoiler alert, it lasted all day. The sky opened up, leaving the media crew to send just a solo photographer and a drone out to capture the action on the Øresund Bridge in the miserable conditions. On the bright side, at least there wasn’t any wind. We’ll take our victories where we can get them.
With limited photo coverage from around the course, we’re going to try something a little different and recap the action by going from worst to first place.
Starting with...
24th - Aker - Ab InBev (Projected in Preview: 24th) Check #1: + 1'49 (24th) Check #2: + 3'18 (24th) Finish: + 4'30 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Vincent Van Hemelen | 26 | 3.30 | 69 | | Anders Foldager | 25 | 3.13 | 65 | | William Junior Lecerf | 24 | 2.00 | 64 | | Gabriel Francisco Rojas | 26 | 3.50 | 61 | | Hamza Amari | 24 | 1.68 | 59 | | Ricardo Delgado Gonzales | 25 | 3.35 | 58 | | Cesar Macias | 23 | 3.27 | 58 | | Edvin Lovidius | 24 | 1.67 | 54 | | Average | 24.6 | | 61 |
Summary: Yeah, kind of what you expect when you bring an unmaxed squad and no TTers. To only be four and half minutes off the winning time should be seen as an achievement, really. Hopefully no Norwegian fans of this squad made the day trip over here to see whatever this was.
23rd - Assa Abloy (Projected in Preview: 23rd) Check #1: + 1'36 (23rd) Check #2: + 3'03 (23rd) Finish: + 4'26 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Luis Esteban Murillo | 25 | 4.23 | 70 | | Tim Torn Teutenberg | 24 | 4.12 | 66 | | Aurelien De Comarmond | 24 | 4.00 | 64 | | Linus Kvist | 27 | 4.100 | 64 | | James Morris Berroa | 24 | 3.99 | 61 | | Romeo Quicibal | 32 | 4.100 | 57 | | Average | 26.0 | | 64 |
Summary: Sick joke by the organizers to make Assa Abloy the last team off the start ramp. The six-man team was already down to four when they reached the second checkpoint. They somehow managed to stick together and beat Aker by four seconds. The local spectators waited for seemingly forever for detached Quicibal to arrive after his team finish so they could finally re-open the Øresund Bridge to the public.
22nd - cycleYorkshire (Projected in Preview: 22nd) Check #1: + 1'22 (22nd) Check #2: + 2'27 (22nd) Finish: + 3'12 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Hatem Ben Ameur | 24 | 4.42 | 74 | | Anders Skaarseth | 31 | 4.100 | 70 | | Alexandre Kess | 23 | 3.27 | 68 | | Kasper Andersen | 24 | 4.99 | 65 | | Maurice Ballerstedt | 25 | 3.36 | 65 | | Callum Thornley | 23 | 3.32 | 65 | | Finlay Pickering | 23 | 3.50 | 63 | | Antoine Huby | 25 | 4.09 | 62 | | Average | 24.8 | | 67 |
Summary: Over a minute faster than Assa Abloy and enough to earn some ranking points from the race from their youngsters, with a single point awarded to each of the Top 5 finishers. cycleYorkshire also managed to beat the traffic back to the United Kingdom by starting second today and getting the team bus packed up a little earlier than most teams.
21st - Polar (Projected in Preview: 21st) Check #1: + 1'20 (21st) Check #2: + 2'25 (21st) Finish: + 2'58 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Mads Wurtz | 32 | 4.100 | 83 | | Harry Sweeny | 28 | 4.100 | 71 | | Muhammad Yudha | 27 | 4.100 | 66 | | Jan Brockhoff | 32 | 4.100 | 65 | | Artem Nych | 31 | 4.100 | 65 | | Ryan Christensen | 30 | 4.100 | 64 | | Stefano Oldani | 28 | 4.100 | 64 | | Jesus David Pena | 26 | 3.25 | 62 | | Average | 29.3 | | 68 |
Summary: Wurtz did the heavy lifting as expected, but unfortunately had way too much dead weight hanging onto him. A valiant effort nonetheless, although his frustration with his teammates became increasingly obvious as the finish line approached and the time gap continued to grow. The one-man TTT experiment was rather unsuccessful.
20th - Grieg-Maersk (Projected in Preview: 20th) Check #1: + 1'02 (20th) Check #2: + 1'51 (20th) Finish: + 2'36 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Tobias Foss | 29 | 4.100 | 77 | | Morten Hulgaard | 28 | 4.100 | 76 | | Laurence Pithie | 24 | 4.31 | 72 | | Julius Johansen | 27 | 3.91 | 68 | | Daniel Arnes | 26 | 3.30 | 67 | | Amund Grondahl Jansen | 32 | 4.100 | 65 | | Magnus Bak Klaris | 30 | 4.100 | 65 | | Alexander Kamp | 33 | 4.100 | 59 | | Average | 28.6 | | 69 |
Summary: PCT wildcard Grieg-Maersk started right in front of Polar and went 22 seconds faster. Solid effort and right where the pundits thought they would finish, they have been spot on so far.
19th - Bolt - Eesti (Projected in Preview: 17th) Check #1: + 1'01 (19th) Check #2: + 1'50 (19th) Finish: + 2'16 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Sachin Dulanjana | 31 | 4.100 | 74 | | Eriks Toms Gavars | 29 | 4.100 | 73 | | Mats Wenzel | 24 | 4.24 | 73 | | Sarris Evangelos | 25 | 4.61 | 69 | | Sasu Helme | 30 | 4.100 | 69 | | Ewen Costiou | 24 | 4.28 | 68 | | Karlis Klismets | 23 | 3.00 | 68 | | Kantaphon Kunkumpai | 24 | 4.35 | 66 | | Average | 26.3 | | 70 |
Summary: The first team to slip further down the leaderboard than their predicted finish. The trio of Dulanjana, Gavars, and Wenzel didn't have the legs today to make much of difference.
18th - Fastned (Projected in Preview: 18th) Check #1: + 57 (18th) Check #2: + 1'41 (18th) Finish: + 2'15 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Michel Hessmann | 25 | 4.100 | 78 | | Thibault Guernalec | 29 | 4.100 | 74 | | Harm Vanhoucke | 29 | 4.100 | 72 | | Ide Schelling | 28 | 4.100 | 70 | | Sjoerd Bax | 30 | 4.100 | 68 | | Liam Slock | 26 | 3.30 | 66 | | Piotr Havik | 32 | 4.100 | 65 | | Liam Crowley | 24 | 3.07 | 63 | | Average | 27.9 | | 70 |
Summary: One second quicker (faster...) than Bolt for Fastned, thanks to some big pulls from Hessmann. Also the first team to be under a minute of the winner's time at the first checkpoint.
17th - MOL Cycling (Projected in Preview: 19th) Check #1: + 50 (17th) Check #2: + 1'30 (17th) Finish: + 2'11 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Szymon Rekita | 32 | 4.100 | 79 | | Yanglem Rojit Singh | 26 | 4.16 | 74 | | Mikel Demiri | 26 | 4.03 | 72 | | Hector Carretero Millan | 31 | 4.100 | 71 | | Marton Dina | 30 | 4.100 | 69 | | Radoslaw Fratczak | 24 | 4.30 | 65 | | Milan Fretin | 25 | 4.19 | 64 | | Dionysos Douzas | 24 | 2.00 | 63 | | Average | 27.3 | | 70 |
Summary: Powered by veteran Rekita, MOL jumps up two spots from their predicted finish by beating Bolt by five seconds and Fastned by four seconds. Still looking for that first team to get under the two-minute mark from the winner's finish time.
16th - Rabobank (Projected in Preview: 15th) Check #1: + 43 (16th) Check #2: + 1'19 (16th) Finish: + 1'45 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Remco Evenepoel | 26 | 4.100 | 79 | | Emil Dima | 29 | 4.100 | 74 | | Tim Marsman | 26 | 4.10 | 74 | | Oliver Knight | 25 | 3.30 | 72 | | Marco Frigo | 26 | 4.100 | 71 | | Axel van der Tuuk | 25 | 3.30 | 69 | | Milan Vader | 30 | 4.100 | 67 | | Rick Pluimers | 26 | 3.55 | 64 | | Average | 26.6 | | 71 |
Summary: Evenepoel and his boys get us under the two-minute mark, but it's not quite the ride they were hoping for today as they slip down a spot from their projected finish and miss out on the Top 15.
15th - Carlsberg - Danske Bank (Projected in Preview: 14th) Check #1: + 38 (14th) Check #2: + 1'07 (14th) Finish: + 1'39 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Mathias Norsgaard | 29 | 4.100 | 79 | | Hugo Forssell | 27 | 4.100 | 75 | | Mathias Krigbaum | 31 | 4.100 | 74 | | Gustav Wang | 23 | 3.10 | 73 | | Gyasi Sulvaran | 32 | 4.100 | 72 | | Tilen Finkst | 31 | 4.100 | 67 | | Milan Menten | 30 | 4.100 | 67 | | Morten Nortoft | 24 | 2.00 | 66 | | Average | 28.4 | | 72 |
Summary: The hometown team ended up a spot worse than their preview prediction as well. They were on track through the first two checkpoints but lost valuable seconds in the final sector. They also didn't get much extra support on the road today with the constant downpouring of rain turning the crowds away.
14th - Duvel - Tsingtao (Projected in Preview: 13th) Check #1: + 38 (15th) Check #2: + 1'07 (15th) Finish: + 1'37 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Benjamin Thomas | 31 | 4.100 | 78 | | Cristian Perez | 27 | 4.100 | 76 | | Jinyang Ju | 23 | 3.04 | 73 | | Martin Papanov | 27 | 4.100 | 73 | | Ilan Van Wilder | 26 | 4.100 | 73 | | Cian Uijtdebroeks | 23 | 3.08 | 71 | | Laurenz Rex | 27 | 4.90 | 65 | | Samuel Watson | 25 | 3.20 | 65 | | Average | 26.1 | | 72 |
Summary: The second PCT wildcard squad. Duvel - Tsingtao tied Carlsberg at the first two checkpoints before pulling two seconds clear at the finish for 14th. Still, one spot worse than they had hoped for, thanks to one team apparently finding a few extra watts today.
13th - Cedevita (Projected in Preview: 16th) Check #1: + 26 (11th) Check #2: + 57 (13th) Finish: + 1'35 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Matic Groselj | 30 | 4.100 | 77 | | Izidor Penko | 30 | 4.100 | 76 | | Yevgeniy Fedorov | 26 | 4.100 | 75 | | Veljko Stojnic | 27 | 4.100 | 75 | | Fred Wright | 27 | 4.100 | 70 | | Niklas Behrens | 23 | 2.00 | 68 | | Florian Kajamini | 23 | 3.01 | 64 | | Max Poole | 23 | 3.04 | 64 | | Average | 26.1 | | 71 |
Summary: We have caught the overachievers. A blistering start from Cedevita helped them leapfrog Duvel, Carlsberg, and Rabobank. They didn’t have a headline man to carry the load, but a deep roster more than made up for it, with everyone doing their part when it counted.
12th - Evonik - ELKO (Projected in Preview: 12th) Check #1: + 31 (13th) Check #2: + 55 (12th) Finish: + 1'16 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Ivo Oliveira | 30 | 4.100 | 79 | | Akil Campbell | 30 | 4.100 | 76 | | Alekss Krasts | 25 | 4.100 | 75 | | German Dario Gomez | 25 | 4.100 | 74 | | Arthur Kluckers | 26 | 3.20 | 72 | | Kristers Ansons | 27 | 4.100 | 71 | | Ki Ho Choi | 35 | 4.100 | 71 | | Joshua Gayral | 29 | 4.100 | 71 | | Average | 28.4 | | 74 |
Summary: The halfway point and we are starting to get to the teams that have put real strong consideration into their TTT squads this season. Evonik - ELKO is the first squad with all 70+ TTers across the board. But not enough top-end aero machines to crack the Top 10.
11th - Gazelle (Projected in Preview: 11th) Check #1: + 26 (11th) Check #2: + 45 (11th) Finish: + 1'01 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Andreas Leknessund | 27 | 4.100 | 78 | | El Mehdi Chokri | 29 | 4.100 | 75 | | Giovanni Aleotti | 27 | 4.100 | 74 | | Filippo Baroncini | 26 | 4.100 | 74 | | Getachew Sendeku | 31 | 4.100 | 74 | | Juan Osorio | 31 | 4.100 | 73 | | Benjamin Brkic | 30 | 4.100 | 72 | | Manuel Senni | 34 | 4.100 | 72 | | Average | 29.4 | | 74 |
Summary: The fully maxed, veteran squad came here with a realistic shot at a Top 10, but could only look on in disbelief when they realized they missed that target by a single second.
10th - Ekoi - Renault (Projected in Preview: 10th) Check #1: + 20 (10th) Check #2: + 36 (9th) Finish: + 1'00 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Alexys Brunel | 28 | 4.100 | 78 | | Sulkhan Akhmaevi | 29 | 4.100 | 77 | | Sergio Arias Villanueva | 28 | 4.100 | 77 | | Kevin Vauquelin | 25 | 4.100 | 76 | | Matis Louvel | 27 | 4.100 | 73 | | Arman Garibian | 26 | 4.100 | 73 | | Emanuel Castro | 23 | 3.13 | 72 | | Lenny Martinez | 23 | 3.38 | 68 | | Average | 26.1 | | 74 |
Summary: The French squad tops Gazelle by a second to secure a Top 10, a full minute behind the winners. A strong Top 4 carries the line for them while, ironically, the man holding them back is the one making the most money and their future superstar: Lenny Martinez. Humbling learning experience for the young lad.
9th - Hunter Valley (Projected in Preview: 8th) Check #1: + 20 (9th) Check #2: + 36 (10th) Finish: + 47 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Yentl Vandevelde | 26 | 4.100 | 78 | | Brady Gilmore | 25 | 4.14 | 78 | | Henry Alberto Sam | 27 | 4.100 | 76 | | Jaime Castrillo | 30 | 4.100 | 76 | | Nickolas Zukowsky | 28 | 4.100 | 75 | | Lawson Craddock | 34 | 4.100 | 74 | | Miles Scotson | 32 | 4.100 | 74 | | Marc Soler | 33 | 4.100 | 73 | | Average | 29.4 | | 76 |
Summary: Hunter Valley posted the same times as Ekoi - Renault at the two checkpoints on the course, but blitzed ahead in the final sector to beat them by 13 seconds. They still come in one spot further back than projected even with the furious fast finish.
8th - ELCO - ABEA (Projected in Preview: 3rd) Check #1: + 1 (2nd) Check #2: + 2 (2nd) Finish: + 43 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Ioannidis Kiriakidis | 29 | 4.100 | 78 | | Szymon Sajnok | 29 | 4.100 | 78 | | Michael Christodoulos | 29 | 4.100 | 78 | | Pangiotis Christapopoulos | 31 | 4.100 | 78 | | Martinos Moutsios | 25 | 4.100 | 78 | | Nikolaos Ioannidis | 33 | 4.100 | 77 | | Renus Uhiriwe | 25 | 4.100 | 77 | | Remi Cavagna | 31 | 4.100 | 76 | | Average | 29.0 | | 78 |
Summary: It's the first shocker! While Hunter Valley didn't start nearly fast enough, ELCO - ABEA flew way too close to the sun and overcooked themselves gunning for the win today. They had the second best time at both checkpoints (holding the fastest time for most of the day as they started 10th), but unraveled in the final sector as the team didn't want to shed any of their deadweight. It ended up costing them dearly.
7th - Tinkoff - La Datcha (Projected in Preview: 5th) Check #1: + 8 (6th) Check #2: + 13 (6th) Finish: + 40 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Nikita Razumov | 30 | 4.100 | 79 | | Aydar Zakarin | 32 | 4.100 | 79 | | Roy Goldstein | 33 | 4.100 | 78 | | Alexander Vlasov | 30 | 4.100 | 77 | | Pavel Sivakov | 29 | 4.100 | 76 | | Aleksandr Bereznyak | 25 | 4.100 | 76 | | Petr Rikunov | 29 | 4.100 | 74 | | Lev Gonov | 26 | 4.69 | 73 | | Average | 29.3 | | 77 |
Summary: Tinkov, the 2019 & 2016 winners, had the honor of being the first team on the course today and ended up setting a respectable time to beat. But, just like ELCO, their final sector let's them down and they didn't live up to the expectations that the pundits put on them.
6th - Los Pollos Hermanos (Projected in Preview: 7th) Check #1: + 11 (7th) Check #2: + 21 (7th) Finish: + 32 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Victor Alejandro Ocampo | 27 | 4.100 | 82 | | Jose Pablo Aguilar Mendez | 26 | 4.100 | 78 | | Mathias Vacek | 24 | 4.87 | 77 | | Fatiu Abolaji | 28 | 4.100 | 76 | | Juan Ayuso | 24 | 4.99 | 75 | | Oscar Samuel Galvan Ramirez | 26 | 4.100 | 75 | | Hector Exequiel Quintana | 24 | 3.99 | 74 | | Jakob Soderqvist | 23 | 3.15 | 74 | | Average | 25.3 | | 76 |
Summary: The colorful jerseys of LPH didn't go unnoticed today. They brought a very young, yet strong TTT unit that slightly overperforms thanks to Ocampo leading the charge. They miss out on the Top 5 by seven seconds, but improve on their 8th place finish from a season ago.
5th - Specialized (Projected in Preview: 9th) Check #1: + 6 (5th) Check #2: + 10 (3rd) Finish: + 25 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Tom Wirtgen | 30 | 4.100 | 84 | | Benoit Cosnefroy | 31 | 4.100 | 78 | | Jonathan Milan | 26 | 4.100 | 77 | | Omer Goldstein | 30 | 4.100 | 77 | | Adam Holm Jorgensen | 24 | 4.50 | 74 | | Willhelm Wallinder | 25 | 4.15 | 73 | | Nik Cemazar | 27 | 4.100 | 72 | | Josh Kench | 25 | 4.85 | 68 | | Average | 27.3 | | 75 |
Summary: Wirtgen won't make it 6-for-6. The best time trialist on paper didn't have the strongest team for once. But it wasn't for the lack of effort, as Wirtgen alone helped Specialized pull above their average weight here to claim at least a Top 5 when a Top 10 looked more likely.
4th - Xero Racing (Projected in Preview: 6th) Check #1: + 5 (3rd) Check #2: + 11 (4th) Finish: + 23 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Rune Herregodts | 28 | 4.100 | 79 | | Diego Agustin Ferreyra | 29 | 4.100 | 78 | | Morne Van Niekerk | 31 | 4.100 | 78 | | Michael O'Loughlin | 29 | 4.100 | 78 | | Miguel Heidemann | 28 | 4.100 | 77 | | Byron Munton | 28 | 4.100 | 75 | | Kelland O'Brien | 28 | 4.100 | 74 | | Nate Pringle | 23 | 3.13 | 73 | | Average | 28.0 | | 77 |
Summary: Munton won't make it 6-for-6 either but gets some bragging rights on his former EA Vesuvio teammate Wirtgen. Although, it was Herregodts, Ferreyra, Van Niekerk, and O'Loughlin that did the heavy lifting here to help Xero jump up a couple of spots. Now, to the Top 3...
3rd - DK Zalgiris (Projected in Preview: 4th) Check #1: + 13 (8th) Check #2: + 21 (7th) Finish: + 14 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Rokas Kmieliauskas | 26 | 4.100 | 82 | | Justas Beniusis | 29 | 4.100 | 80 | | Yoshiki Terada | 24 | 4.33 | 78 | | Giorgi Nareklishvili | 33 | 4.100 | 77 | | Stefan Kung | 33 | 4.100 | 76 | | Janos Pelikan | 31 | 4.100 | 75 | | Venantas Lasinis | 29 | 4.100 | 74 | | Aivaras Mikutis | 24 | 4.34 | 74 | | Average | 28.6 | | 77 |
Summary: Pelikan won't make it 6-for-6 either but gets some bragging rights on his former EA Vesuvio teammates. It was a slow start for DK Zalgiris, but Lithuanian duo Kmieliauskas and Beniusis took control on the back half of the course to get their guys on the podium.
2nd - King Power (Projected in Preview: 1st) Check #1: + 0 (1st) Check #2: + 0 (1st) Finish: + 9 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Filippo Ganna | 30 | 4.100 | 80 | | Yuttana Mano | 29 | 4.100 | 80 | | Ethan Hayter | 28 | 4.100 | 78 | | Chun Wing Leung | 32 | 4.100 | 78 | | Stef Krul | 31 | 4.100 | 78 | | Lorenzo Milesi | 24 | 4.43 | 78 | | Brandon McNulty | 28 | 4.100 | 77 | | Shoi Matsuda | 27 | 4.100 | 77 | | Average | 28.6 | | 78 |
Summary: The pre-race favourites are upended after having the fastest time through the first two checkpoints! They seemingly didn't leave enough in the tank for the last stretch in Sweden once they got off the Øresund Bridge. Hopefully it's not a mistake they will look back on months from now when searching for missing points in a title chase because a runner-up finish here is still an excellent team achievement.
That leaves one team left...
1st - Indosat Ooredoo (Projected in Preview: 2nd) Check #1: + 6 (4th) Check #2: + 12 (5th) Finish: + 0 | Nat. | Name | Age | XP | TT | | Eddie Dunbar | 30 | 4.100 | 82 | | Ryan Mullen | 32 | 4.100 | 81 | | Brent Van Moer | 28 | 4.100 | 79 | | Prasetyo Firdaus | 25 | 4.100 | 78 | | Jhonatan Casillas | 31 | 4.100 | 77 | | Rachmad Noka Wibisono | 27 | 4.100 | 76 | | Jonathan Croes | 29 | 4.100 | 76 | | Harry Tanfield | 32 | 4.100 | 76 | | Average | 29.3 | | 78 |
Summary: With a winning time of 1h04'46", Indosat Ooredoo overcomes a 12-second deficit at the second checkpoint to win here for the first time ever! Harry Tanfield proves to be the good luck charm, winning his sixth straight Copenhagen-Malmo TTT after five consecutive wins with EA Vesuvio. This time however, unlike the 2022-24 editions, he doesn't cross the finish line first.
