Stage 4 Report

Today the riders reach the mountains with a 181k stage from Annonay to Le Venon. A plethora of categorized climbs, 2 Cat 4s, 4 cat 3s, 2 cat 2s (one at the finish) and two Cat 1s (Plan du Faz, Villard de Lans). 8 escapees reach the first climb, the Cat 4 Cote du Bois Roti (800 meters at 11.7%), with a lead of 1’44. KOM leader Stojnic is here but keeping his jersey on today’s parcours will be a challenge.

Bloem takes out the first sprint ahead of Zegklis and Van Hooydonck. Peloton at 3’10 with 160k to go.

Del Toro wins the second KOM, a Cat 3. Rest of the points go to Kmieliauskas and Zegklis. Gap has just been going out, it is 5’53 now with 132k to go. The climbs coming pretty regularly from here on in.

Zegklis leads all the way up the next Cat 3 but Cepeda comes around him to take maximum points. Bloem takes 3rd. Zeglklis up to 11 points which puts him ahead of Stojnic who has 9.

The next climb is a Cat 4 and Zegklis just wins it. Ahead of Stojnic and Cepeda. Same order in the virtual standings with Zegklis 4 points up on Stojnic and 8 on Cepeda. But that could all change starting in about 17k, as they tackle the first Cat 1, the Plan du Faz, 8.4k at 9.7%. The peloton let the lead go to 8’40 but are working now and it is down to 7’58, Zwift and Tinkoff doing the damage.

With 4.4k to climb Stojnic is dropped from the break. Arias Villanueva and Bloem already gone. Peloton holding the gap at about 7’30.

Cepeda is the best climber in the break and he rides away from the others to take maximum points. 20 seconds behind are Zegklis, Del Toro and Kmieliauskas cross in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Van Hooydonck was dropped a while back and he and the other original members of the breakaway are all over 2 minutes down. 2nd is enough to keep Zegklis in the virtual lead of the KOM 28-24 on Cepeda.

The front 4 are back together as they start the 2nd Cat 1, the Villard de Lans. An unusual climb it average 5.7% across 11.5k, a lot of it is pretty flat but it has two steep sections in the middle and at the end and in these stretches the max gradients reach almost 20%. About half way up the Villard de Lans the Inkelaar group is able to rejoin bringing the peloton up to 122 riders, but he is still not well positioned.

At the top of the climb Cepeda again tries to ditch his companions but this time they stay with him. He still takes maximum points ahead of Zegklis. They are tied on 40 now. De Toro (26) 3rd on the climb and in the virtual standings. Peloton at 5’11 with 57k to go. A lot of flat and downhill now before the very steep Cat 2 Cote du Mollard (1.3k at 16.1%) which comes with about 18k to go.

With about 50k to go the peloton is down to 85 riders and trails the leaders by 6 minutes. Inkelaar in a better position now. The Yellow Jersey was dropped a while back confirming we will have a new race leader.

The attack only drops his teammate Del Toro initially.

Nobody is able to get away in the peloton and 78 riders tackle the descent together. Up front Cepeda again gets the better of Zegklis and Kmieliauskas on the final Cat 3. He has a 4 point lead on the Assa Abloy rider in the virtual standings. Only the Cat 2 points at the finish left. Their lead is 3’32 with the pressure easing a little in the peloton. 15k to ride, the last 4.4k is the finishing climb which average 8.8%.

Zegklis gets the 6 second bonus at the second sprint point giving him 10 total. Kmieliauskas has 4 and Cepeda 2.

Those seconds might matter in the GC as the leaders hit the climb with a lead of 3’29. The peloton hasn’t seemed that focused on catching them.

600 meters, Kmieliauskas looks strongest in the break. Jorgenson can be seen behind 44 seconds down. 10 seconds behind him is the main group with 65 riders. Kudus leading that.

Kmieliauskas cracks the other two and can see the finish, Jorgenson is still 38 seconds behind and Kudus has reached him. They have 22 seconds on the rest of the GC riders.

The Lithuanian will win a lot of TTs in his career but this win in the mountains will look good on his palmares. He let the other two fight out the KOMs and saved his energy for the final climb.

Kudus and Jorgenson gain 17 seconds on the rest of the GC riders who all finish on the same time.
