Stage 1 Report

We’re racing to the Sun. The first three stages are for the sprinters and today’s is the easiest, 153k in the area of Houdan. One Cat 3 on the journey so some cheap jersey points to be had. Also two sprint points. After those 3 stages the sprinters will go into survival mode and it will be all about climbing before a 23k TTT on S8.

About 20k gone and the first 3 attackers have 1’10 on the peloton as they start the lone categorized climb (3.6k at 2.7%). The attackers are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/ced.png Stojnic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/lph.png Quintana, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/ekr.png Arias Villanueva. Seems like EKOI and Los Pollos will be breakaway frequent flyers this year. Xero wanted to be in the break and chased briefly before launching pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/xr0.png Van Niekerk, but it isn’t looking good for him as he is closer to getting caught than he is to catching these 3.

Stojnic is the best climber in the break and he will be the one wearing the KOM jersey tomorrow (and the next day as there are no KOM points tomorrow). Arias Villanueva is second.

100k to go for the peloton with Specialized (Holm-Jorgenson), Bolt-Eesti (Wenzel), Zwift (Schmidt) and Tinkoff (Goldstein) furthest forward. Van Niekerk is back in the pack.

The Vauquelin group rejoined but the route is bumpy and the peloton is constantly splitting and reforming.

Approaching the 5k banner the trains have formed up. Left to right it is Mol (Y. R. 1.2k Vernon has taken advantage of the inside line to take the lead, Enger locked on his wheel. Forssell is with them. Next two are Mikhels and Kiskoen but more gap to their sprinters, particularly Peak who is caught in traffic.

800 meters Vernon couldn’t keep up the pace and now Enger has to launch as Mikhels and Kiskonen are past him. Dainese in good position behind Kiskonen but MOL are taking advantage of Mikhels with Y.R. Singh and Halvorsen following him ahead of Peak. Tinkoff still well positioned on the right barrier. Van der Kooij and Kooij also still in it for Rabobank. Specialized are furthest back of the original trains.

400 meters Van der Kooij hits the front with Kooij just coming of his wheel. This sprint is slightly uphill so waiting might be a good call. Dainese doesn’t seem to have been able to find his top gear and has dropped back. Mikhels fading now and Y.R. Singh is past him with Halvorsen still on his wheel. Samolenkov launching on the barrier but Rikunov was slower than the rest of the lead outs and they have lost ground.

200 meters and Kooij hits the wind for the first time. Looking like a great lead out for him. Buratti right behind him has also profited. Halvorsen, Peak and Dainese looking to follow those two on the left barrier. Halvorsen sprinting now on the far right.
