There are two races here today, one for the stage win and one for the GC. As mentioned yesterday, the latter will likely be between yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/aab.png Dainese, 2nd place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/blt.png Gaviria and 4th place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/evo.png Kemboi, perhaps with advantage to the latter. The Kenyan could even challenge for the stage win, too, where the top favorite is still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/cdb.png Andersen.

Said top favorite is on the road fairly early. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/hvc.png Vandevelde had the best time before him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/cdb.png Andersen beats it by … 4 seconds. Doesn’t look super impressive, but the margins are thin here.

The first big test for that time comes with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/ekr.png Kopfauf. The Austrian remains 3 seconds slower than Andersen and slots into provisional second place.

No one comes close for a long time, until pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/xr0.png Herregodts finishes 5th at +4.

And then the sprinters are on. Defending champ pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/ela.png Farantakis had a terrible race so far, but has a chance to at least move up from his current 16th overall today. He does well, provisional 8th place at +5. We’ll see how far this can take him.

The lead-out had some great results on his own, and his time of +9 seconds leaves him tied with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/ela.png Farantakis – and the Greek ends up just ahead by fractions of a second. A Top 10 finish is looking likely for both, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/cdb.png Rodenberg put himself into position for a great GC result with two podium places on the sprint stages. With 6 riders left on the road and a time of +14, he takes the provisional GC lead.

But then comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/rab.png Kooij, another sprinter who almost doubles as a prologue specialist. He cracks the Top 20 on the day and easily takes the GC lead.

It doesn’t last, though. In comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/evo.png Kemboi, who makes his bid for the overall win. And it’s a strong one! Just 2 seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/kng.png Ganna, he’s second at the finish line.

Not today, though. He loses 21 seconds to the Evonik leader but remains firmly 2nd overall with one more rider on the road.

He tries to limit his losses as best as he can, but ultimately finishes 140th at +47. No chance for the GC win, and ultimately, it’s not even enough for the podium. He falls behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/rab.png Kooij to 4th overall.


Which means January is not even over yet and title defenders Evonik – ELKO have already won their second stage race! Congrats to them and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/evo.png Kemboi in particular, and also to stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2026/Micros/kng.png Ganna, of course.
