The Race
It’s the last day of CT racing for this season and because all relevant ranking questions are essentially decided it’s all about ending the season on a high.
There has been quite some interest to join the last break of the season and make a last memorable appearance before the renewal season. Putting themselves on display are Singh, Yamada, Johanson, Minami, Molano, Richardson, Kajamini, Romele, Pickering, Buck-Gramcko and Umba.
De Paula, Ramirez and Ruvalcaba Reyes are just about to join them after a fierce fight with the chasing peloton.
Halfway through the race the gap to the peloton is 3’49 after maxing at 6 minutes. The profile doesn’t have longer flat parts, so it will be a lot about attrition today.
With 49 km to go the leaders enter the biggest climb of the day, they only have a minute to the peloton though. The next 35 km are a constant up and down, but the last 15 km are essentially flat.
The break is already caught one km later.
There weren’t any attacks in the climb, but now attrition takes its toll and only 41 riders are left in the peloton with 40 km to go.
And with 31 km to go there is an attack by Velasco! He drags Sagan, Vincent, Schultz, Eriksson, Turgis, Masnada, Rota and Miltiadis with him. This could well be the decisive move.
A chasing group of 12 makes it back, but with 23 km to go Velasco tries again!
He doesn’t get away, but at least he further reduces the leading group to 19 riders. They now enter the penultimate kicker.
An attack from Eriksson further reduced the group to 14 riders. It consists of those riders who got away earlier apart from Miltiadis plus Filutas, Stocek, Lagane, Lafay, Gladysh and Rojas.
Eriksson attacked again over the top of the last kicker and this time he, Velasco and Vincent get a gap!
With 9 km to go the three attackers have 32’’ to a chasing group of seven. Filutas, Lagane, Gladysh and Rojas are another 24’’ behind.
The leaders have nearly a minute to the chasers with 4 km to go. They will take the podium spots today.
Vincent attacked his companions with 2.5 km to go but this led nowhere. Behind them Filutas, Lagane and Rojas have re-joined the first chasers.
Eriksson launches his sprint with 700 m to go. Will he surprise the other two?
He has the lead with 200 m to go.
And Eriksson takes the win! Velasco finishes in a strong 2nd, Vincent is 3rd.
Behind them Rota wins the sprint for 4th in front of Sagan, Turgis, Masnada and Schultz.
Lagane, Rojas and Stocek finish in 9th to 11th.
Congratulations to Eriksson who puts a happy end to a transition season of his team!
