Stage 5 Report

Stage 5 is the first mountain stage of the race. One big climb at the end – La Alpujarra (Cat 1). Before that just a single Cat 3 as the organizers still stingy with the KOM points. The usual 2 sprints across 187k

20k into the race the first 11 attackers come together to form the break of the day. Their lead already 5’28. Again, Xero sitting on the front but not chasing. In the break are.

Foldager goes early and easily wins the first sprint, Broxham second. Peloton not chasing yet and the gap is 12’03 with 123k to go.

Broxham takes the points on the Cat 3 ahead of Skaarseth and Hessman. Peloton at about 13 minutes behind, that been the gap for a while. 101k to go. Xero doing all the chasing so far.

Foldager takes the second sprint point also ahead of Broxham. Peloton at 11’56 with 69k to go.

35k for the peloton, the gap is gradually coming down and is now 10’27. The break will start the climb soon. Not clear how much time they will need at the bottom to take the stage, none of them are great climbers. The climb is 20k at an average of 5%, it is pretty steady with the maximum grade being 7.3%.

With 18k to go for the peloton a big split sees 60ish riders dropped, nobody important.

14k for the peloton. 95 riders in the peloton. Carlsberg near the front now. Ahead the break are at the 10k banner, they are all together but the stronger climbers might need to go harder now as their lead down to 6’45.

An attack by Skaarseth draws Mendoza and Toupalik clear of the rest of the break. They still have 5’38 with 6.7k to ride.

With 6k to go the peloton is still 5 minutes down. Ahead Foldager has been dropped from the break. That leaves Broxham and Toupalik as the threats to the Red Jersey in the break.

For the 5th straight day we have a new race leader. Foldager loses just enough time to make Broxham the race leader by 17 seconds. Those are points Sony – Force India won’t have been expecting, they have had a top 10 finish on every stage except 1. Broxham is the new best young rider and Camrda gets the KOM jersey based on winning the Cat 1 climb, he is tied on points with Skaarseth.
