Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 of the Vuelta takes the riders 203k into Vejer de la Frontera, two sprint points but the only KOM points are at the finish (Cat 3).
Mostly it is pretty flat but the finish is uphill and it is proceeded by another sharp climb so this looks like one for the punchy finishers. Not a lot of that kind of rider here so the favorites are mostly the GC guys - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz could take the leader’s jersey today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/favs.jpg

Despite the lack of KOM points the two main combatants from yesterday immediately attack. They are joined by 3 others to form the break of the day. The 5 are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Piccolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Andersen (polka dot), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Foldager (white), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Gonov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Agirrebeitia. They have 3 minutes with 194k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/01.jpg

The lead maxes at over 16 minutes with about 140k to go but with 100k to go it is back to 8’40. On the front are Polar (Minali, Nych), Aker(Sarreau), Rabobank (Meeus), Puma (Hollman), Carlsberg (Finkst) and UBS (Maciejuk).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/02.jpg

At the first sprint it is Andersen, Foldager, Gonov, Piccolo, and then Agirrebeitia. Grap 3’08 with 60k to go, mostly Polar and Xero chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/03.jpg

Polar seem to be the only ones really focused on catching the break and the lead begins to expand again as they run out of riders.

The order at the second sprint is the same except Gonov is ahead of Foldager. Gap is 2’45 with 30k to go. Carlsberg, Aker, Rabobank and UBS all back on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/04.jpg

15k to the finish, in 3k the break will start the climb before the finish (Repetxo, 3.3k at 3.6%, although the last 600 meters are much harder) Carlberg the team committing to the chase now and the gap is 1’31. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Gregaard, Skivild, Kragh Andersen and Bablidze. Rabobank look ready to pick up the chase if the Danish team falters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/05.jpg

Over the top Agirrebeitia is the strongest with Piccolo clearly dropped. The peloton just over a minute down. 4.6k to the start of the final climb which is 2.6k at an average of 6.6%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/06.jpg

The break minus Piccolo is back together as they start the final climb. Peloton at 39 seconds with Xero chasing seriously for the first time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/07.jpg

1.7k for the break. Polar did all that work for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png McCarthy, he is well positioned on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Mas’ wheel but he will need to move soon. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Latour are other big names well placed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/08.jpg

It looks like heartbreak for the breakaway as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Blums ups the pace with Areruya on his wheel. Herklotz sticking to the Rwandan like glue. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu has some space on the left and looks ready to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/09.jpg

Blums rips up the mountain and it is all over for the beak before the 1k banner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/10.jpg

It flattens out as they turn to the finish. Blums still ahead but he must be tiring. Mas has the inside line with McCarthy on his wheel. Herklotz to their left then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Stöckli leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Valter has got himself into a better position on the outside and has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Lopez as a leadout

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/11.jpg

600 meters it is Areruya versus Valter on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/12.jpg

300 meters, Areruya with a slight edge. Aranburu on the far side and Herklotz on the near side are the biggest threats to the two leaders. McCarthy is 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Areruya takes first blood. A great leadout from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Blums and Xero’s hero is the strongest, his first grand tour stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Valter 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Herklotz for 3rd. The German was the only one of the contenders isolated at the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Champoussin come next. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Stöckli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Mas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Hellemose.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S2/15.jpg

Stage two was a long slow burn but finishes with fireworks as the favorites battled it out on the last climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen hangs on to the front group of 109 but loses the red jersey to Areruya on placings. He does hold on to GC second and his teammate, Aranburu, is fourth. Valter sits in third. Kragh Andersen does keep the points lead.

Foldager finishes ahead of Andersen taking over the KOM lead but does not hold on to the lead group at the finish so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Gonov is the new best young rider.
