Stage 1 Report

Welcome to Mijas for the start of the 2025 Vuelta a Espana. Today the riders travel to the regional capital of Málaga. The stage is 160k and includes a fair amount of climbing although only 2 rated climbs (both Cat 3). But the last 40k are flat so this is one of the few stages where the sprinters should be confident of contesting the win. They also have two sprint points to play for.

And the top sprinter in the race, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Philipsen, is the favorite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/favs.jpg

The flag drops and it is the Danes who are most inpatient. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Foldager are the first attackers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Skivild on the front of the peloton, I am sure he wants to follow his countrymen but that might not be his role today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/01.jpg

We do get a third Dane but it is not Skivild but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Johansen. They also agree to let pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/dna.png Heinrich be an honorary Dane to bring it to 4 in the break. But the peloton not happy with this, Cedevita and Spark chasing and with 20k gone the gap is only 1’08. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Biermans is trying to get away from the peleton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/02.jpg

At the first sprint Johansen leads out Foldager who just takes the points ahead of Heinrich. Peloton at 48 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko takes the last points from the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/04.jpg

The first climb of the race is the Alto Sierra Almogia (5.8k at 6.8%). The pack has relented and the leaders have 3’02 with 120k to go. Johansen lost contact after the leadout at the sprint and hasn’t been able to rejoin, he is 33 seconds down right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/05.jpg

Foldager is the strongest on the climb. Andersen is second. Johansen over 1’50 back, not looking good for him to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/06.jpg

Andersen wins the second cat 3 ahead of Foldager. Those two tied in the KOM, we will see who gets the jersey. Peloton has the lead down to 2’15 with 84k to go. Johansen has been caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/07.jpg

50k to go for the peloton, the gap is 1’09. The second sprint is in 13k so it is possible the break will be caught before then. On the front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Fedorov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Vabo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Mano, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Marryatt, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Skivild. 11 riders dropped including riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Leemreize, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Frankiny, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Fouche, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png De Plus. The breakaway hopefuls already working on losing ground in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/08.jpg

The peloton leaves it a tiny bit late and Foldager takes out the second sprint. Andersen and Heinrich 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Scott take 4th and 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/10.jpg

The break is caught and the peloton eases off after the sprint allowing the Leemreize group to cut their deficit from almost 4 minutes to 2’30. But with 20k to go the fight has begun for position at the front so they may not close the rest of the gap.

7k now, the trains look organized.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Bohlipcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen

Siric is on the radio wondering where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Philipsen is. Luckily he is not far back, just at the bottom of the picture. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Afewerki next to him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Kulikovskiy are on either side of Kragh Andersen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Foliforov is the Tinkoff rider between the Aker and Carlsberg trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/12.jpg

With 3k to go King Power and Cedevita looking strongest although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Meeus is between Siric and Philipsen. Van der Kooij next to Philipsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Koumpetsos on the Belgian’s wheel. Banaszek has found Foliforov in the middle of the road. Kulikovskiy behind him and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Scott. Spark looking like they might get squeezed out on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/13.jpg

1.5k King Power and Cedevita still strongest. Koumpetsos, Minali and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Mareczko have Phillipsen’s wheel. Thompson has found room in the middle for Spark but they have ground to make up. Banaszek has lost ground and is caught in traffic. Valter made a great dash up the left hand rail but didn’t have his leader behind him. Bohli hanging on to the King Power train.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/14.jpg

Under the 1k banner, Mudgway almost has Afewerki level with the leaders. Scott following them. Kulikovskiy in the wind but at least involved. Finkst is trying to bring Kragh Andersen back up. Everyone not in the picture is probably out of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/15.jpg

600 meters, Siric isn’t the quickest to get going and Philipsen seems to have got stuck behind him. The two in the middle doing best as Afewerki has launched and Kragh Andersen is also well positioned. Contreras is sprinting for King Power now as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Bauhaus has got himself in the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/16.jpg

200 meters, it looks to be between Contreras, Kulikovskiy, Kragh Andersen (the right hand of the two Carlsberg riders) and Afewerki. Scott could make a late run.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/17.jpg

And the veteran shows he still has it. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen takes stage 1.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Kulikovskiy with a long sprint is second just ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Scott and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Afewerki.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Bauhaus gets up to grab 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Contreras is 6th, he probably had the best lead out but wasn’t able to finish it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png Minali is 7th and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Koumpetsos. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Bohli is 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/GTM/Vuelta/S1/21.jpg

Botched leadouts cost the two biggest favorites as they finish 12th (Philipsen) and 18th (Banaszek).

More riders are dropped in the finale and about 25 riders lose time.

Andersens get 3 jerseys with Asbjorn in the GC and points jersey and Kasper in the KOM. For Kragh Andersen his third Vuelta stage win, he also won stage 1 in 2023.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Foldager is the best young rider.
