Stage 4 Report

The final stage here in the Basque country is similar to stage 3. 142k with a bunch of climbs packed in the second half of the stage with the final one topping out a little before the end. Three cat 2â€™s and a Cat 1 today plus Cat 4 at the finish, which is on an uphill

The organizers like men who can handle the longer climbs for today.

Kolev. Gaspar and Lipowitz both pretty good climbers. The former only 28 seconds down on GC so the peloton will need to be careful. Right now, the gap is only 1â€™31 so the break might not stick. Koide the only one with KOM points and he has just 8, putting him currently in 13th in that competition.

Munoz reach the front. Ponce and Munoz also good climbers and all 3 are on 28 seconds in GC. Despite that and the size of the break Bianchi do not seem worried and they have let the lead grow to 3â€™03.

Romele has been doing much of the work and looks a bit tired. But given the make up of the break, and his large lead, his KOM jersey is looking pretty safe.

Koide and Antunes are dropped from the break halfway up the climb.

Lipowitz attacks early but is passed by Ponce and Smit right at the top of the climb. Bourgoyne and Kolev dropped, they might make it back though.

Tivaniâ€™s chances to hold on to his GC position today because they have the Green Jersey wearer on the front despite him being 2nd on GC. Kolev was not able to rejoin the break and is on his way back to the pack which is 1â€™53 down on the leaders. 68k to go.

Lipowitz shows the most interest in the first sprint point and wins it easily, he is 2â€™06 down on GC so it seems less valuable to him. The breakaway riders are now on the 2nd Cat 2, the Alto de Karabieta (5.2k at 7.6%). The peloton at 1â€™50.

Smit and Catro take the rest of the sprint points.

3k to climb. Bourgoyne, Munoz and Ponce all dropped. The last two a bit of a surprise since they are good climbers but they did a lot of work on the flat to get over to the break.

Lipowitz and Castro pull away from the rest on the climb and roll over the KOM point almost side-by-side (Lipowitz gets first). Gaspar and Piganzoli are 44 seconds back, then Smit at 52 seconds and the peloton at 1â€™12. The good news for the peloton is neither of the two left up front are that close on GC.

With the KOM points being spread out Romele should have that jersey secure. His only concern is the time limit, he is currently on his own in last, 11â€™37 down, he should be OK.

40k to go, only Lipowitz and Castro left out front. They have 55 seconds. SEE Turtles and Bianchi on the front. Tivani has been dropped after all his work. The rest of the GC top 10 still in the 136-rider peloton.

Over the top and on the descent more riders are shed from the peloton and a group of 64 starts the final climb, the Cat 2 Alto de Aiastia (4.8k at 4.2%). A lot of riders from the big group sitting on 28 seconds in the GC are dropped but no big names and nobody else from the GC top 10.
