US Pro Cycling Challenge

Stage 3 Report

Stage 3 of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge takes the peloton west again for a stage that starts on the shores of Canadaigua Lake and ends above the western branch of Keuka Lake. Most of the stage is not that hard but the closing 20k includes a quick series of sharp climbs before the stage and the race finish on Italy Hill, a 3.4k climb at 6%, where the race winner will likely be decided. Overall 154k with 4 Cat 3s and a Cat 4 plus Cat 3 points at the finish.

At the top Mugisha takes the points ahead of Van Heerden and Van Tricht. Lead at 5â€™15. 40k of flat before the next climb.

At that climb, which is Cat 4, the same three riders take the points but the order is Van Heerden, Mugisha, Van Tricht. Their lead reached 5 minutes but is back to 3â€™40 with 98k to go. Zalgiris and Gjensidige doing the work agin. Another 30k of flat before the next prime, the lone sprint point.

By the time the peloton reaches the sprint with 67k to go the lead is down to 2â€™06. The break didnâ€™t contest the points. In another 25k the pointy end of the stage gets going with two quick Cat 3â€™s in succession before another lull and then the race finale.

The break starts the first of the Cat 3â€™s with a lead of 1â€™28. The climb is Gray Road (3k at 7.7%). The climbs here are all steep roads leading away from the lake. After Gray Road the riders descend back to the lake and the immediately tackle Sturdevant road, 2.5k at 7.3%. Both these climbs are very steep at the bottom but then flatten out as they move onto the plateau above the lake.

Van Heerden gets 6 more points at the top ahead of Le Court and Dunne. Van Heerden now on 15 points, he can tie for the KOM lead if he wins the next climb.

Van Heerden comes up short on Sturdevant road and Le Court, Mugisha and Dunne take the points. Van Heerden tied for 2nd right now with Mugisha up to 4th in the KOM. There is one more Cat 3 to go plus the finish, but it is not clear if the break will make it that far. The peloton has been conservative on the climbs and is 2â€™28 down with 36k to go.

Luehrs near the front for Kraftwerk who have been very anonymous prior to this. In 1.6k the break will start Wager Hill (1.1k at 11.2%), which is the first of the finishing climbs. It is followed by Williams Hill (1.9k at 7.9%, Cat 3) and Esperanza Hill (0.8k at 9.8%). Then the riders will tackle the finishing climb.

Govekar briefly join Tesfatsion off the front but they are all brought back and Robov leads the peloton off desecent and on to the 1.8k of flat roads before the final climb. Peloton officially back to 81 riders but it is very stretched.

And the race is decided in the last 300 meters as Stannard grabs the stage win and enough bonus seconds to take the GC. Eiking drops to second, Hirschiâ€™s consistency is rewarded with 3rd. The first 13 get a gap on the rest and will also be the first 13 on GC.
