The breakaway of the day gets established quickly without much fuss. We join the action as the leaders start the first ascent of Midland Trail (8.1 km 6.2%). They do this climb four times. These are the breakaway riders:

Laas is the only rider with prior KOM points and he's the most motivated to collect more here. It's a long stage so the peloton are letting these guys have a bigger gap, currently at 6 minutes.

We get a curious split in the breakaway at a fairly innocuous moment in the race. Maybe the workload was not shared equally. Things come back together so not sure what that was about.

Laas wins another 10 points with this he moves into 3rd in the standings and has a good chance of claiming the jersey today. The breakaway's gap is down to 5 minutes.

Laas takes only 6 points here, but that's enough. A bit of false flat now over the top before a descent and the final climb to the finish.
