Stage 7 Report

The last stage of the Tour of Northern Europe is a second chance for the puncheurs. A smaller number of climbs today but longer climbs. The main climb is Bourscheid in Luxembourg which will be tackled 3 times from one direction and twice from another direction, across the 168k. All have Cat 2 points except the last time which is the finish.

Among the favorites are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Schmid and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Van Dijke who will hope to put the pressure on the riders ahead of them and maybe snatch a GC podium at the last.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/favs.jpg

Not satisfied with yesterday’s heroics, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Herrera, attacks from the line. He wants to protect the KOM jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/01.jpg

The breakaway takes out the only sprint point. Joining Herrera are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Gerts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Potocki, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic. The gap is only 27 seconds, teams who want to be in the break keeping chasing until their rider can get a across. UBS is not in the break and appear to want to be, so they are chasing right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/02.jpg

Herrera is dropped from the break shortly afterwards, paying for going to early perhaps or all his efforts yesterday

35k gone, lots of people want to be in the break. The front group now down to 4 has 42 seconds on a group of 6 who have 34 seconds on another group of 6. Then 1’07 back to the peloton, who were chasing but appear to have eased off now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/03.jpg

With 128k gone all those riders come together minus Herrera who was dropped from the last group and is 1’43 down, not looking good for him. The peloton another 2’02 down. The 15 riders in the break are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Anderberg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Laporte
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/akm.png Swift
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Meiler
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Menten
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/dna.png Van Bekkum
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Potocki
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Van Wilder
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Gerts
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Maciejuk
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Serrano
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Asgreen
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Bonnamour
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Kanerva

The break includes 2nd and 3rd in the KOM competition in Potocki and Bonnamour. Closest on GC is the defending champion Gerts who is in 24th, 8’06 down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/04.jpg

At the first Cat 3 Bonnamour easily takes the points ahead of his teammate (Asgreen) and Van Wilder.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/05.jpg

At the second Cat 3 Bonnamour again takes the points, this time ahead of Meiler and Potocki. That is all the preliminary climbing done. The first ascent of the Côte de Bourscheid is in about 20k. Bonnamour now has the virtual KOM lead, he is 19 points ahead of Potocki. The peloton is 2’59 behind, Gazelle, Xero and Tinkoff are chasing, they don’t seem willing to get the break get too far ahead at the moment.

The break hits the bottom of the Cat 2 Côte de Bourscheid for the first time with a lead of 2’21. From this approach on the main road the climb is 2.1k at 7.9% with a max of 12%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/06.jpg

Gerts takes the maximum points. Van Wilder edges Potocki for 2nd. Menten 4th, Van Bekkum is 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/07.jpg

75k to go, the gap 3’01, a lot more teams contributing to the chase today. Tinkoff have Yatsevich and Kamyshev, Xero have Frankovic and Van Niekerk, Gazelle have Ponomar and Fastned have Braet. Antonijevic was dropped by the break on the climb and is struggling to rejoin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/08.jpg

The second time up the climb Bonnamour pays more attention and just holds off Van Wilder and Kanerva. Potocki settles for 4th with Asgreen 5th. Van Wilder up to 4th in the KOM standings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/09.jpg

Laporte, Anderberg, Swift and Maciejuk are dropped on the climb and struggle to get back on, about a third of the way through the lap they are still 30 seconds down. The peloton slows on the climb each time, the gap to them is 2’50, the same teams working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/10.jpg

Bonnamour takes a clean win on the next ascent. Gerts, Potocki, Meiler and Menten take the rest. The KOM jersey looking safe for Bonnamour as he now leads 2nd placed Potocki by with only one KOM sprint left. The dropped riders have not been able to rejoin, Laporte has given what he can and gone back to the pack while the other 3 still chase. Peloton at 2’01, 30k to go. The next time round they take the steeper ascent up the side roads and then circle back down the main road to repeat the harder ascent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/11.jpg

Potocki and Gerts push on and get a small gap after the climb but Asgreen closes them down. None of the dropped riders are going to be able to rejoin. Left up front are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Meiler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/cdb.png Menten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/dna.png Van Bekkum, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lpu.png Potocki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Van Wilder, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/rab.png Gerts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Serrano, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Asgreen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Bonnamour, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Kanerva.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/12.jpg

The break hits the bottom of the next ascent with a lead of 1’41 and 15k to go. Polar, Evonik and ELCO all contributing to the chase now. From this direction the climb is 1.9k at 9.4% with a max of 13.9%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/13.jpg

Asgreen and Menten are dropped from the break early in the climb, Kanerva soon after. Behind there are 97 riders left in the peloton. All the GC top 20 still present.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Bonnamour puts an exclamation point on his KOM win by taking the last climb. Potocki will take 2nd, Herrera will finish 3rd and Gerts moves up to 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/14.jpg

Midway up the climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant attacks the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/15.jpg

The peloton splits over the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Schmid (5th on GC), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eko.png Kung (3rd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Van Baarle (7th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Vermeersch (6th) are all among those caught behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/16.jpg

The break start the final ascent with a lead of 1’01 on Vansevenant and 1’33 on the first chase group of 15, the Kung group has not rejoined. They have 3.4k to climb, the finish is a about 1.5k beyond the top of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/17.jpg

Race situation:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/std1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Herregodts struggles to stay in the front chase group on the climb. Ahead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock driving they have caught Vansevenant and Potocki, who was dropped from the break. The remainder are just 29 seconds ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/18.jpg

With about 500 meters in the climb and 2.2k in the stage it is over for the break and we have a 17-rider lead group. The gap back to Herregodts is already 1’24 and he has been caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Schmid and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Adria who have pulled away from the next group. The Swiss rider will be cursing himself for missing the original split or he might be in with a chance at the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Van Dijke on the front as they turn for home. Further back Herregodts is fading and has been passed by Kung and Vermeersch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/20.jpg

Under the 1k banner there are 11 riders at the front. Then 25 seconds to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Kinoshita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pol.png McCarthy and another 11 to Schmid, Gerts and Adria.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/21.jpg

600 meters, Van Dijke opens up the sprint but Bonnamour, next to him, seems to have more left. Vansevenant, Meiler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Skujins have been gapped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/22.jpg

300 meters Bonnamour looks to be about to add a stage win to his KOM win. An even better day than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Herrera had yesterday. Pidcock on Van Dijke’s wheel then it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Nikiema.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Bonnamour wins stage 7.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ced.png Nikiema takes 2nd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Pidcock is 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Van Dijke settles for 4th, still a great ride by him, he should be moving up the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen proves himself the master of all terrains by finishing 5th on the stage and ably defending his Yellow Jersey. He wins the Tour of Northern Europe for the 2nd time, becoming the only the second rider to win it multiple times, after Fabian Cancellara. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gzl.png Malecki is 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Tikhonin 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Reports/PT/TONE/S7/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant grabs 8th, more passion than sense in some of his racing the last few days, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Van Wilder is 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tti.png Skujins is 10th.

Some big time gaps on the final stage as many in the top 10 lose time to the winner- pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/jur.png Schmid 45 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eko.png Kung 1’28, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Vermeersch 2’23, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/evo.png Herregodts, 2’53 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/grm.png Pedersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Van Baarle both lose 4 minutes.

As a result Van Dijke and Schmid grab the podium spots behind Wirtgen, huge points for two teams deep in the relegation battle. Kung drops to 4th and Herregodts down to 5th. Pidcock and Vansevenant move into the GC top 10 taking 9th and 10th, they just can't be separated. Pidcok avenges his defeat by Vansevenant last year but he would have preferred it be higher up the standings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Farantakis wins the points jersey.

Van Dijke is also the best young rider with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ubs.png Serrano grabbing 2nd based on his breakaway exploits.

Other than winning the race EA has a poor last day and ELCO grab the teams jersey from them by 6 seconds.
