Welcome to Hungary for the eight edition of the cobbled race Macskako Kerekparverseny, which, according to Google when Nemolito googled it last year, translates to cat circle race. Can we trust Nemolito and Google, though? We are up for 168,7 km of racing here in Hungary, and it's not only going up and down, up and down and then up and down, its going over cobbles aswell.
First edition of the race back in 2018 was won by Jérome Baugnies. It has trought times been both C1, PTHC and a PT race before becoming a HC race this year. Other winners has been historical greats like Summerhill, Trentin, Gerts, Sinkeldam and Wisniowski before Jan Polanc won last year, none has won it twice!
Previous winners:
Spoiler
| Year | Winner | | 2024 | Jan Polanc (Evonik - ELKO) | | 2023 | Lukasz Wisniowski (Aker - MOT) | | 2022 | Matteo Trentin (Carlsberg - Danske Bank) | | 2021 | Floris Gerts (Huski Chocolate) | | 2020 | Ramon Sinkeldam (Carlsberg - Danske Bank) | | 2019 | Danny Summerhill (Andorra Cycling Project) | | 2018 | Jérome Baugnies (Kulczyk - DMTEX) |
2024 results:
Spoiler
| 1 | Jan Polanc | Evonik - ELKO | 4h05'58 | | 2 | Mads Pedersen | Grieg-Maersk | s.t. | | 3 | Edward Theuns | Jura GIANTS | + 10 | | 4 | Mathieu Van der Poel | Lidl Cycling | s.t. | | 5 | Nathan Van Hooydonck | Fastned | + 16 | | 6 | Hampus Anderberg | Aker - MOT | s.t. | | 7 | Marcos Altur | MOL Cycling Team | s.t. | | 8 | Floris Gerts | Rabobank | s.t. | | 9 | Ivan Siric | Cedevita | s.t. | | 10 | Florian Senechal | Tinkoff Team - La Datcha | s.t. |
Last years winner, and mangame legend, Polanc is back and might be one of the best suited riders for this race with his great combination of cobbles and climbing, he does however have some really scary competitors. Benoot might be one of the scaries with him being a better climber and better sprinter while just being a bit weaker on the cobbles. Kasperkiewicz and
Gaday are two other very strong cobbles who also can climb well. I would not be suprised if all of those 4 ends up really high here
Among the more pure cobblers we have strong riders like Wisniowski, Zepuntke, Stallaert and Girmay. They are all riders who can survive the hills but are not as strong as the earlier mentioned riders and will hope that the peloton will take it easier and that they can survive to the end. Their skills on dobbles however should not be underestimated.
Other pure cobblers that might with good daily form and some luck perform are cobblers like Daniel (who has had a stronger seasong start than I believed he would), Sulimov, Moulingui, Kuroeda, Louvel, Kolev and Hvideberg among others. Though I do believe the race might be to hard for them
There are also several puncheurs present who might want quite a different race. De Bie is the strongest one and he might suprise in this race, also last years number 4 Van der Poel is back and he should be among the big favorites in my opinion as he is a great allround rider who should fit this well. Last year CT winner Jorgenson who is more of a climber is also present and should be looking to make this race as hard as possible.
This could also be a race where the allround riders shine, we have already mentioned to standout names like Benoot and Van der Poel, but Godon, Habimana, Ghani, Marzuki, Lapeira and Basso (With how this season is going for Bianchi he will most likely win...) are a group of riders who might perform better than expected on a course like this
In my eyes this should be a race for the allrounders, and I see Polanc, Benoot and Van der Poel as the strongest of them!

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Thanks Heine for the preview!
Again not a suitable parcours for Daniel, so we’ll take every point!

Thanks for another nice preview, Heine! Let's hope your list of favourites is somewhat accurate as we have five riders on it

For Lecourt De Billot I'm quite sure that Macskako Kerekparverseny translates to "I'm going to get my ass kicked, if I don't start delivering some points or at least fight a bit more for results".

Don't have a lot of hope with how the season has gone on the cobbles so far but praying for the best! Thanks for the preview!

Polancs best race imo so really looking to see what he can do here. But favourite should be Benoot.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Wisniowski has delivered okay results so far this season, but is missing a big result. Hope he can achieve that in this race, where he has podiumed several times before. Thanks for the preview!

Not the race where I think we can shine on, but that judgement has been fooling me for the better part of this season so who knows.
Curious to see if one of the big 5-8 PCT cobblers can make this count for them or if we get another surprise winner.
Thanks for another great preview Heine!

Congrats jaxika, Benoot is proving once again why the entirety of PCT will be happy if he finally disappears to PT!
And thanks to Abhi for a great report! I waited the entire finale for Rubens attack because Louvel did all the chasing, but Matis was just so strong himself and showed why we (and obviously not only we) have high hopes for him! It's clearly his best result so far points-wise (although he's already been 2nd on some stage when out on loan with ivan). And Ruben quietly finishing in 8th plus Lapeira in 12th make it just a great race for us (although I hope the results and Abhis praise don't get to their head too much ).

Thanks Abhi for the report! And congrats to jaxika with the well deserved victory. Also big points for Bolt and Ekoi.
Job done for Daniel and Ariesen picking up the minimum points.

Great race for us
We got some much-needed points with three guys in the top 30, we were active throughout the race, and most importantly Lecourt De Billot learned some Hungarian (who cares if he dropped 5-7 places in the last km):

Basso deadly again when he gets the right circuit on this version he just performs way above his stats another 45pts in the bag for him there moves him past the 160pt mark for the season which is already way above even my expectations for him.
Livyns grabbing another 5pt as well takes us to 50pt as good as a C2 win outstanding from the guys again |

At least some good results here. We tried to send a cobbler and a puncheur in the hope that one of them can get a good finish. 5th for the cobbler and 13th for the puncheur is an ok result I guess
Thanks for the report!

I did not have "van der Poel's cobbles scoring" as the most likely route to safety this season, but I'll take it
Congrats to jaxika and thanks for the report Abhi!
Welcome to Hungary for the eight edition of the cobbled race Macskako Kerekparverseny, which, according to Google when Nemolito googled it last year, translates to cat circle race. Can we trust Nemolito and Google, though?
Google Translate really doesn't enjoy Hungarian due to the diacritics - I've seen much worse errors made, and made them myself
macska = cat
kő = stone
macskakő = cobblestone
kerek = round, kerék = wheel (think this is what causes the confusion!)
pár = pair
kerékpár = bicycle
verseny = race
kerékpárverseny = bicycle race |
