Tour de France
Stage 20 is the queen stage, two HC climbs with an Cat 1 in between. The second HC climb, the Hautacamm, will mark the finish of the stage and the finish of the GC “battle”. The stage is another fairly short one at 142k.
Kudus still holds a commanding lead and Lecuisinier is pretty safe in second. The GC action will be Haig vs Pogacar for 3rd. Haig starts with a 25 second edge. Also, whether Cras can hold on to 6th, he starts with a nice 3’16 cushion. Finally, less than 2 minutes separates 8th to 12th (Shikai to Padun), so a bad day could hurt someone in that group. And of course, there is always the chance of an unusual breakaway result catapulting a rider up the standings.
20k in and the riders must be tired because it is a relatively small break today, just 12 riders. They have 2’17. Some familiar names present in our KOM gladiators Johannessen and Mas. Johannessen starts the day 33 points down. Mas is the best man on GC in 15th (16’45). Lidl with strong representation with Faglum Karlsson and Burke, they haven’t had much luck in the breaks so far. The other 8 are:
Schelling
Girdlestone
Rubio
Elissonde
Papanov
Storer
Barthe
Hänninen
Moser control things on the flats and as the break starts the first climb, the HC Aubisque (16k. at 7.4%) their lead is just 2’40. About 85k left in the stage.
With 5k to climb for the break, and Burke driving the pace, the gap has grown to 6’33. Barthe and Johannessen are dropped. The Norwegian seems to have reached his limit but he has had a great race. He won’t be winning the KOM jersey but he still has over 11 minutes to spare in the White Jersey competition so that should be safe.
1.8k to climb, just 3 left in the front, Faglum Karlsson, Mas and Girdlestone. Peloton at 7’31, Moser still with 5 riders on the front.
Soon after Falgum Karlsson rides away from the other two and goes over the top with a lead of over a minute. Mas takes 3rd he will be the 2024 King of the Mountains.
The peloton reach the summit 7’32 behind the leader. Just under 100 riders still in the peloton.
As they start the 2nd climb Mas and Girdlestone are back with Falgum Karlsson. Burke and Schelling 30 seconds down. The climb is the Cat 1 Col de Spandelles, 10.3k at 8.3%. 44k to go with the peloton at 6’09.
4k to climb, the other two hanging with the Lidl man for now. Next group back to 3’02, peloton at 6’43.
Girdlestone loses contact with 2.4k to climb. Mas almost immediately after this shot.
With 25k to go Faglum Karlsson’s lead is up to 9’28 as Moser have run out of domestiques and nobody else has picked up the chase. He has 1’29 on Mas. In 11k he will start the Huatacam (14k at 7.8%)
Parra Bustamente leads the 64-rider peloton onto the final climb of the race. In a sign that they haven’t exactly been flying, Johannessen is still 1’09 ahead. Falgum Karlsson at 8’37, Mas at 6’18.
On the climb Evonik immediately goes to the front and Eenkhoorn quickly catches Johannessen. 12k to go for the peloton.
Soon after Johannesen becomes the first rider from the GC top 20 to be dropped.
9k to go, Padun is the first attacker.
After a short effort from Osorio the chase falters and Padun opens up a 2’30 lead, catching all of the break except Falgum Karlsson who still has a good lead. Finally, it is Cras who responds which brings out Lecuisinier.
As Lecuisinier heads off up the road Sivakov responds which brings Cedeviata (Habtemichael, Buitrago) to the front of the peloton. Ahead Falgum Karlsson has 4’24 on the first chase group (Padun and Burke) with 2.5k to climb.
1.5k for Falgum Karlsson, it looks like Lidl will get their stage win. He has 4’05 on Padun who has dropped Burke.
Behind Lecuisinier has a nice gap but nothing Kudus needs to worry about. Almeida has taken over the chasing in the Yellow Jersey group, Cras is almost caught. Race situation:
With 2.4k to climb, Kudus goes to the front. He immediately causes a split, only 7 rider with him: Haig, Pogacar, McNulty, Almeida, Aular, Carthy, and Shikai. Ahead Lecuisinier has almost caught Padun.
A tired Falgum Karlsson wins Stage 20.
Lecuisinier drops Padun just past the 1k banner.
Under the 1k banner, Kudus has Sivakov in his sights, he can also see Padun who is 58 seconds ahead. Pogacar needs to move soon if he is going to gain time on Haig.
Lecuisinier take 2nd, he is about a minute up on Kudus. He only gets 2nd on the stage and not much time, that and a feeling that Kudus let him go will make this a bittersweet result. Behind Pogacar has attacked, Haig able to follow.
Padun takes 3rd, his attack won’t net him much on his GC rivals, but two riders not far ahead of him in GC Warchol (9th) and
Mamykin (11th), were dropped some time ago. Behind Kudus is coming fast. Pogacar has not been able to shake Haig. Shikai is suffering the most of the top names.
Sivakov holds off Kudus for 4th.
Pogacar finishes ahead of Haig for 6th but there will be no time gap. Barring disasters tomorrow Haig will be the third man on the podium. Carthy, Aular, McNulty and Almeida are the next 4 to finish.
Cras finishes in 20th. But he keeps his losses to Shikai to 2’18 and holds on to an outstanding 6th place. Not to mention 3rd in the KOM.
Shikai drops behind Carthy into 8th. McNulty and Padun move up into 9th and 10th. Aular, still in 13th, is the rider who is probably most disappointed.
Lecuisinier’s 2nd moves him to 2nd in the points competition but he will likely lose a few spots tomorrow.
Johannessen gives up about half his advantage in the White Jersey, he will be glad there isn’t another mountain stage tomorrow. Buitrago is 2nd.
Tinkoff maintain their lead in the teams competition, an impressive 20 minute gap for them ahead of MOL.
