Tour de France
Stage 18 takes the riders 176k from Carcassone to Foix. It features two Cat 1 ascents in the last 60k but the second one peaks with 28k to go so it does not seem likely to be a GC battle. Earlier in the stage there are two Cat 4s and a Cat 3.
The parcours probably favors a break but if they are brought back look for the big GC guys to fight it out.
Yes, that is the breakaway, quickly 34 riders off the front including the big 3 in the KOM competition of Johannessen, Cras and Mas. Cras is 6th on GC at 10’16 so while Kudus is safe the rest of the GC riders can’t be too complacent. The break is on the first Cat 4.
Johannessen takes the 5 points, Mas gets 1. His lead is 161 – 134. Warchol takes 2nd.
The full list in the break:
Donovan, Harper, Johannessen, Lastra
Firdaus, Girdlestone, Kirsch, Ries
Garibian, Pinot
Cras, Schelling
Cort Nielsen
Balmer, Bongiorno, Vervaeke, Warchol
Darbellay, Rohendi
Burke, Faglum Karlsson, Mansouri
Lopez Nolasco
Papanov
Inkelaar, Mas, Oldani
Champoussin
Foliforov, Mamykin
Martin
Bonnamour, Elissonde
Rodriguez
The break hits the Cat 3 (6.5k at 4.8%) with a lead of 3’17, all of Moser on the front of the peloton. 145k to go. The 2nd Cat 4 comes quickly after this climb and then there is a long flatish section before the first big climb of the day.
Johannessen goes a little early and Mas comes round him to take 1st on the Cat 3. Cras gets 3rd. Lead is 3’10.
Mas also wins the Cat 4 ahead of Johannessen and Warchol. Peloton at 3’28. Abdul Halil punctured and has not been able to rejoin, he could be looking at a long lonely ride.
Foliforov leads the break through the sprint point with 110k to go. Lead is 4’28. 42k to the beginning of the first Cat 1.
The break hits the first Cat 1, the Port de Lers (11.6k at 7%) with a lead of 8’41. Moser conserving their powder for now. 64k to go.
With 4k to climb Balmer is the first man dropped from the break. Peloton is 10’50 down. Cras and Mas are the virtual GC 1st and 2nd right now.
Warchol takes maximum points ahead of Cras. Then Inkelaar, Mas and Johannessen. Those 5 are alone at the top. With the rest of the break spread down the mountain. Peloton at 11’18.
Moser reaches the top with 3 domestiques left and a gap of 11’32 to the front. Johannessen is leading down the descent, he has 9 seconds on the other 4 and another 13 on a group of 9.
A group of 14 reaches the second Cat 1 together at the front. They have 58 seconds on the first 4 chasers and 11’16 on the peloton. The 9 rejoining are: Darbellay, Kirsch, Champoussin, Mamykin, Lopez Nolasco, Cort Nielsen, Pinot, Vervaeke and Foliforov. Gazelle, Polar and Tinkoff still have 2 riders at the front. The climb is the Mur de Péguère, 9.3k at 8.3% with the steepest sections in the last 3k.
As soon as the peloton hits the climb Bratashcuk ups the pace. Lecuisinier on his wheel. Inkelaar, Mas, Johannessen and Pinot have been gapped at the front.
With 6k to ride in the climb, Padun attacks. Herregodts and Rubio go after him with McNulty hitching a ride. They get a small gap over the Konrad led peloton which is down to 57 riders.
Buitrago brings the peloton back to the King Power trio with Lecuisinier and Carthy on his wheel. Up front Cras and Foliforov have been dropped with 1k to climb, all the KOM kings paying for their efforts now. The gap from Padun to the front is still 9’39.
After some pacing by Vervaeke, Warchol attacks the break, only Kirsch and Mamykin can go with him. Mamykin closest on GC of these 3, 16’39 down on Kudus and 9’49 down on Lecuisinier. Mas is still well ahead in the KOM competition.
Warchol takes the points. The three leaders have 28 seconds on Vervaeke and 50 seconds on the next 5. The attacks have eased off in the peloton, Padun has been caught, Skjelmose on the front. They are 9’43 down. Cras still has 8’53 on Kudus which puts him virtual 2nd in the GC.
With 1k to climb Padun attacks again. Pogacar, McNulty, Lecuisinier and Kudus follow. Up front the three leaders have 1’07 on the next group and 22k to ride.
Over the top Carthy counters and gets a small gap. There are 28 riders in the Yellow Jersey group. All the GC top 20 are either in the Yellow Jersey group or ahead of it.
9k to go Warchol attacks his breakaway companions. They are off the main descent now, more of a gradual downhill from here to the finish. Carthy is at 8’35 and has joined one of the big dropped breakaway groups. Peloton at 9’18 being led by Almeida.
Having failed to drop his companions at 10k, Warchol tries again with 5k to go. The Yellow Jersey group is 9’10 behind, these 3 are moving well up the GC.
Again, Warchol can’t get a gap. They are still together with 2k to go, looks like they will sprint this one out. Kirsch is probably the best sprinter of the three. The Carthy group has 24 seconds on the Yellow Jersey group which is 9’04 behind the leaders.
600 meters, they are neck-and-neck. Behind the Yellow Jersey group have caught Carthy.
200 meters, Warchol isn’t getting his second stage win.
Kirsch wins Stage 18 by half a wheel over Mamykin. Gazelle were prime movers in the break but settle for third today with Warchol. Now we wait for time gaps.
Champoussin wins the sprint for fourth from the next group. Then Cort Nielsen and Darbellay. Cras takes 7th, he will have to wait to see where he is on GC. Right now, the gap is 7’50. Vervaeke and Lopez Nolasco are the next two in this group and take 8th and 9th. Mas is able to catch up to this group late and take 10th. Inkelaar who did a lot of work for him is 11th.
With 6k to go Carthy attacks the Yellow Jersey group and pulls, Pogacar, Lecuisinier, Haig, McNulty, Padun and Kudus clear. Sivakov misses it at first and has to bridge solo.
Sivakov and Shikai are able to bridge across and Lecuisinier leads the group home, taking 19th on the day. Aular does lose 13 seconds to the rest.
Abdul Halil makes the time cut with plenty of room to spare.
The Yellow Jersey group lose 8’12 on the winners. Cras and Mas now on the podium, just over 3 minutes down on Kudus, seems unlikely they will be let in the break again. Johannessen up to 4th 6’14 down. Mamykin up to 9th, Warchol 10th, Kirsh 12th. Aular, Carthy and McNulty are the big losers, all in the back half of the top 20. Be interesting to see if they go in the break tomorrow. A tough mountain stage with a summit finish tomorrow, expect more big changes in the GC.
No change in any in the jerseys but the breaks do mean that Johannessen in White and Tinkoff in the teams both enjoy advantages of around 17 minutes.
