Tour de France
Stage 16 is a 192k hilly-rated medium mountain stage with a flat finish. A breakaway win seems most likely. With a feast of categorized climbs it will be important for outsiders in the KOM competition to bank some points before the big mountains. The full list is Cat 4: 2, Cat 3: 4, Cat 2: 2, Cat 1: 1.
The organizers have the GC riders as favorites.
The first Cat 3 (4k at 8.1%) starts just 900 meters into the stage and Johannessen and Mas are immediately on the attack. They are 2nd and 1st in the KOM compeititon but also 9th and 6th in GC, it will be interesting to see how much leeway they get.
Mas gaps Johannessen and takes 6 points. Cras (7th in GC, 4th in KOM) is third on the road and takes 2 points.
178k to go. Mas, Cras and Johannessen are together at the front along with Ganna, and Phodingam. Neither of those two additions are relevant in GC or the KOM. The 5 leaders are about to start the second Cat 3, the Pas du Coulet (3.4k at 5.8%). The peloton is at 2’09 with Vauquelin and Van Zyl in between the leaders and the peloton.
Mas gets 6 more points at the top ahead of Johannessen and Phodingam. Peloton at 2’37.
Puma, EA, Moser and Rabobank all near the front with 150k to go. The 5 leaders have 4’54. The 2 chasers have stalled out and don’t look like they will make it to the front. Vauquelin got within 30 seconds. Ahead the break is about to start the first Cat 2, the Col de la Baraque de Bral, 4.6k at 8.2%
Phodingam goes first but Mas comes around to win another climb ahead of Johannessen. Peloton at 4’37.
Mas now has a 20-point KOM lead, 129 – 109 with Cras in 4th at 78.
Mas’ winning streak ends at the next climb, a Cat 4, as Johannessen takes maximum. Phodingam 3rd. Peloton at 4’41, Vauquelin and Van Zyl have been caught.
Mas gets back to his winning ways on the next climb, a Cat 3. Johannessen fails to score as Phodingam and Cras take the minor points. Peloton at 4’32 is being led by Puma, EA and Rabobank. Although they have been slowing the chase on the climbs. The next climb is the big one on the day, the Col de Fontfroide, 10k at 7.8%. That starts in about 27k.
The peloton turns on to the Cat 1, 2’46 down. Alaphilippe on the front.
Ganna hangs on until 2.5k from the top but then he begins to lose touch with the leaders. The sprinters teams not willing to chase on the climb and Moser doesn’t need to, so the gap back to 5’16. Still 75k to ride.
Past the 1k banner Phodingam is dropped as Johannessen attacks. The top 3 breakaway riders in the race so far are at it again.
Cras proves strongest, he drops the other two and takes the points solo. Mas 2nd. Peloton at 6’22.
Rohendi and Mansouri come out of the pack to take a few points. Gap to the 3 leaders, who are back together is 7’45.
KOM standings, still a Cat 3 and a Cat 4 to come.
Cras drops the other two again on the Cat 3 and takes maximum points. 67k to go, the last Cat 4 comes about 20k before the end. Cras needs to drop the other two as he knows he can’t win a sprint against them. Johannessen takes 2nd on the climb.
The peloton dramatically raised the pace on the latter part of the climb and now on the flat and with 50k to go the break’s lead is down to 2’39. EA leading with Firdaus and Ries but Moser has been helping out on the climbs. Phodingam has rejoined the leaders but Ganna is almost caught.
40k to go and Rohendi attacks. The break just 1’28 ahead. Leading the peloton is Zimmermann.
37k to go Johannessen attacks dropping first Phodingam then the other two. Rohendi at 1 minute, peloton at 1’34.
32k to go, 9k to the Cat 4. Looks like it will come back together. Cras has bridged back up to Johannessen. 142-rider peloton at 1’08. Among sprinters Grosu, Van der Lijke, Hsu, Groves, Banaszek, and Peak still in the peloton.
With 3.5k to the Cat 4 Rohendi has reached the front of the race but the break has lost its momentum. Peloton just 30 seconds behind. Burke has launched an attack, with Mas, who had been caught trying to follow him. Unfortunately for EA, who did a lot of work, Van der Lijke was briefly dropped and is struggling at the back.
Burke along with Malecki and Storer make it to the front but halfway up the Cat 4 Grosu makes the catch. After the Cat 4 there is about about 5k of false flat, a 7k descent and 7k of flat.
Malecki counters and takes the points at the top. Going with him are Rohendi, Johannessen and Cras. On the climb, Padun (11th on GC) bridges up. Burke, Boileau and Roman also trying to bridge up. After some hesitation Otruba takes up the chase in the peloton.
As they hit the descent, Padun is driving the pace. Johannessen was dropped after the KOM so the other 3 at the front are Malecki, Cras and Rohendi. Burket at 12 seconds, Johannessen at 44. A lot of confusion in the peloton over who should chase after a brief effort by Almeida and they are now 1’17 down. Champoussin has launched an attack.
7k to ride for the leaders, they are off the descent. Burke has reached them. A group with Champoussin, Johannessen, Storer and Hoelgaard is 1’04 down, the peloton another 28 seconds back, Carlsberg (Gregaard) on the front. Van der Lijke has been permanently dropped.
3k, the lead is 1 minute, the other attackers caught. Malecki has to be a heavy favorite from this group. Cras the only survivor from the morning break but it seems like he will miss out on a stage win again.
Under the 1k banner Padun opens the sprint. Rohendi and Malecki closest. Peloton isn’t going to catch them.
500 meters, Malecki has his nose in front.
Malecki wins stage 16, what a great piece of opportunistic riding. Gazelle having a charmed season. Padun gets second, a small gap and some bonus seconds for him. A nice ride by Rohendi nets 3rd. Burke 4th and Cras gets his third top 5.
Peak wins the field sprint for 6th, 49 seconds down. Next is Haig, Carthy, Banaszek and Grosu. The Romanian led out the sprint but cracked near the end.
Cras and Padun both gain 1 spot on GC. No changes in any jersey.
