Tour of East Java - Stage 1
liefwarrior
Welcome everybody to another running of the Tour of East Java. This first stage departs from Yogyakarta, heading south to the one only obstacle of the day: the climb to the water reservoir at Bukit Dermo. The route subsequently loops back north, returning to Yogyakarta for the finish. We're joining the racing on that return leg, and things have gotten messy! Two big name rouleurs in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Barnabas PEAK and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Nicolay CHERKASOV have jumped on the front, as there is not a huge amount of time left to bring back the escapees. Their pace is too severe though, it has severed the peloton into three parts. Danger! Danger! Danger!

How did we get to this moment? Well, the breakaway was formed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Julius VAN DEN BERG, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png George PEDEN and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Alex WOHLER. Responsibility for managing the gap fell to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Aker - MOT, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Polar. Despite initially looking like they had things well in hand, it all went tits up when the incline started. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png VAN DEN BERG seemed to think his best shot of taking the points was to test the stamina of his companions, so he paced hard up the climb. That was enough to temporarily rid him of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png PEDEN, by far the weakest of the group, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png WOHLER had enough in the bank to pip him at the summit. That extended the gap significantly; there wasn't a huge amount of road left in this short course and this breakaway group have proven capable of generating some quite significant wattage, despite their lacking numbers.

You can tell we are reaching the end of this one, because the sprint squads are starting to assemble. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk are by far the most cohesive as of current: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png CHERKASOV is still powering away at the front whilst pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Jasper DE BUYST and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Dan McLAY are protecting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Rick ZABEL from the wind. We can also see that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Dylan GROENEWEGEN is trying to marshal his troops on the left side of the road; he has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Mihkel RÄIM in front of him but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png PEAK has dropped to his rear wheel, perhaps struggling from that earlier effort. I can't imagine that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Jasper PHILIPSEN's directeur will be very happy to see the sprinter already exposing himself to the wind, although it is worth remembering that he has already committed a significant number of teammates to the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/EastJava/S1/3.jpg

Neither pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png GROENEWEGEN nor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png ZABEL have the strength to hold on to their respective trains, and the duo are falling back into the pack as we come through the 10 kilometre mark. It is pure chaos here today! They look like they will be on their own, as their teammates can't afford to slow the pace: our escapees still hold a lead of just under a minute. Don't forget there are two groups that have fallen off the back as well! We're getting our first reports of who might suffer a resultant loss: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Kyen Ho MIN, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Jan HIRT and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Suranga RANAWEERA are all about a minute behind the peloton. They've been spotted because of the contributions pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Axel ZINGLE, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Michael BOROS and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Matis LOUVEL have been making to the chase. Wait! What's this!? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Mark PADUN is stuck there as well but, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Stanislaw ANIOLKOWSKI still chasing the stage, he doesn't have any domestiques capable of helping with the pace. How unfortunate! There may be others who have been caught out, but we've got to get back to the action up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/EastJava/S1/4.jpg

The gap to the escapees has stopped dropping, the peloton is slowing down. It was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png CHERKASOV and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Torkil VEYHE who were providing the impetus. The former has tapped out and the latter is flagging. Ahead of them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png WOHLER is powering away - his pace is too much for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png PEDEN, who again is the first to relent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/EastJava/S1/5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png RÄIM and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png DE BUYST are bringing their respective trains to the front but it might be a case of far too little, far too late. There is just one more corner left in this one and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png VAN DEN BERG is cooperationg with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png WOHLER for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/EastJava/S1/6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png PEAK is going. Boy is he going! The Hungarian champion has rocketed off the front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png GROENEWEGEN firmly attached to his wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png DE BUYST thought about sticking with the move but he couldn't eke anything more out of his legs. That is bad news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png McLAY, as even that momentary hesitation is sufficient for a gap to have opened up, he has a lot of work ahead of him now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/EastJava/S1/7.jpg

That looks like it will be the battle for the final podium spot though, as our escapees are already going under the flamme rouge. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Julius VAN DEN BERG is the first to launch! With the chasers a healthy distance back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png WOHLER has been willing to play a game of chicken for these last few kilometres, but his antics have finally gotten too much for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png VAN DEN BERG. It is all go to the line now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/EastJava/S1/8.jpg

There isn't much between the leading duo, neither possesses the excess in top speed necessary to make substantial progress. Wait! What's this? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png VAN DEN BERG has glanced over his shoulder, he has spotted that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png WOHLER is still with him. His cadence is dropping, he doesn't have anything more to give, he has cracked! With only a couple hundred metres remaining it looks like this one will go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Alex WOHLER.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PTHC/EastJava/S1/9.jpg

No celebration from our Aussie winner, he is barely able to stay on the bike as he comes across the line. The chaotic finale proved too much for our favourites; both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png GROENEWEGEN nor pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png ZABEL lost all momentum with plenty of road left to ride. Instead it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Asbjorn KRAGH ANDERSEN rounding out the podium with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Elias AFEWERKI a wheel-length behind. Then it is very close between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png PHILIPSEN and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Aksel NOMMELA for 5th - with the former taking it by a hair. What a mess.
