Welcome to the 11th edition of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. Since 2018 this was known as a sprinter's race, combined with a short prologue. This year the organizers amended the parcours to three hilly stages in and around New York.
The bookmakers chose  Tomohiro Kinoshita as the main favourite. He already won a stage in Tour of South Africa this season. There is also  Jay McCarthy (3rd in Strade Bianche),  Marc Hirschi (2nd in Badaling) and  Robert Stannard (winner in Strade Bianche).
Also  Tiesj Benoot showed some big form, finishing 2nd in Strade. Then there is the French duo  Anthony Turgis (13th in Strade) and  Aurelien Paret-Peintre (8th in Badaling and 2th in a South Africa stage).  Andrea Bagioli had some consistent performances finishing 3th in Badaling, 7th in Strade and three top-5 places in Tour of South Africa.
Golden oldies  Peter Sagan (seven top-10's in Tour Down Under and South Africa combined) and  Wilco Kelderman (10th in Strade) showed there is still some gas in the tank.
Apart from Paret-Peintre, Ekoi bring another scorer in Rui Oliveira (3th in a South Africa stage). There is another Portugese outsider with Bruno Borges (2nd in a South Africa stage), as backup for Kelderman.
ISA also has a duo leader strategy with  Joshua Edmondson and Aidan Van Niekerk.  Patrick Müller will be looking to extend his Strade form, where he ended up 4th.  Laurens De Plus had a second place in a Norway stage and 13th in Badaling.
We end this preview with  Christopher Lagane, a fan favourite who has been shining in Down Under and South Africa (seven top-10's combined) and  Michal Schlegel.

That second stage should suit De Plus, let's hope he can get his point scoring up to par.

Pretty low expectations here in the US. However, we'd still like to score either through the breakaways or perhaps Carpenter can manage some kind of GC result

This is our first goal race, so it's all about getting APP or Oliveira into the top 5. It's surely not impossible, but it'll need some work and luck.

Another race where we desperatly hope Stannard to deliver. Praying for him to bring in his Strade Bianche's legs. The competition is fierce though. It's definitely not going to be easy.

Very interested to see how this plays out. We wanted a stage race for the puncheurs and this area of Western NY. the Finger Lakes, happens to be (a) one of my favorite parts of the world and (b) full of short steep climbs.
If the riders turn left between the first and second finishing climb on the last stage and go about 8 miles south they would pass the lake house my family own. If anyone wants a cheap, quiet offseason retreat in a pretty part of Western NY, PM me.
The trick to the design was is to try and make it too hard for the sprinters but not so hard that it is taken over by the hybrids. The goal, if we got it right, is that a rider like De Plus won't thrive because it isn't hard enough for his MT to matter (sorry Ollfardh). What I hope to see is a race balanced between the puncheurs, Kinoshita and the like, and the sprinty puncheurs like Oliveira and Lagane.
We have certainly succeeded in attracting most of the relevant players (except Demare). For McCormick, Narvaez doesn't even make Lauren's 1 star, I am hoping Laurens is wrong and that his strong SP will matter enough for him to play a role.

Hoping Benoot can keep his form from Strade Bianche. Also interested to see if MVD can get something for himself in a race like this. Support is decent, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I worked the IRONMAN 70.3 Musselman a couple years ago setting up the timing system. Really enjoyed the area for the quick weekend I was there. Always cool to hear the backstories of how/why routes are created.
As for our team, not expecting anything. Happy to be on home soil!

The finish on Stage 1 didn't really suit Benoot, so a finish in 7th is fine. Hoping for better in the other two stages. MVD staying with the first group is nice as well, abeit in the last spot.

Very enjoyable first stage. Love to see Bagioli winning with a bold attack. I am sure he knows the roads from his time spent at McCormick training camps in the area. Really the most suited stage for Narvaez and when he was finishing fast I was hoping for something a little better than 8th. At least he was up there. Nice to see Simmons in the first group, if this parcours sticks around you can bet it will be a target for him in the future.

Nice to see us in the BOTD, however Schomber is probably the worst guy we could send. (...) we’re satisfied for now, as Carpenter (and Laas) arrived with the favorites on S1.

Congrats to Eden on the win. I had some fun with Bagioli myself in l'Avenir two seasons ago.
APP also doing great, the bonus seconds come in handy in the fight for the top 5.

Enjoy the insight into the route Ulrich - always fun to know the kind of thought that goes into a race like this. Thank you for the preview as well and the first stage report, I’ve been a bit caught up the last few weeks so have been trying to keep up when time permits. Thank you all for keeping the motor running
Perfect first stage for us, these finishes really suit Bagioli to a tee so seeing him wheel away close to he finish and stay away is lovely tomorrow will be hard though, I expect the bigger dogs Kino, Stannard and co to make it hard. Hoping we can do a good job keeping the attacks in check tomorrow and Bagioli can hold on as long as possible.
