Welcome to the 3rd edition of the 4 day stage race, Tour of Lithuania. It's a quirky race opening with two sprint stages, followed by a short 14 km TTT (yes, team time-trial) and ending with classics length hilly stage. Although the hills themselves aren't too difficult.
In 2022 the race was one by a sprinter who won both of the opening stages, the bonus seconds propelling him to the overall win. And guess what? Caleb Ewan is back trying to repeat that feat! The 2023 winner was powered by a strong TTT unit headed up by the winner himself, Tom Wirtgen.
Who will prevail this season? Let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | TTT | Gidich | 72 | 76 | 83 | 77 | 63 | 75 | **** | Buchmann | 71 | 76 | 81 | 74 | 65 | 73 | *** | Wirtgen | 73 | 78 | 75 | 75 | 63 | 72 | ***** | Areruya | 72 | 81 | 81 | 78 | 68 | 76 | * | De Bie | 72 | 70 | 83 | 75 | 71 | 74 | ** | Romo | 71 | 72 | 80 | 76 | 67 | 71 | ** | Mayer | 68 | 69 | 77 | 72 | 72 | 77 | *** | Narvaez | 70 | 72 | 77 | 71 | 73 | 74 | ** | Paret-Peintre | 72 | 76 | 77 | 75 | 72 | 74 | * | Azman | 69 | 76 | 77 | 72 | 65 | 75 | ** | Januskevicius | 71 | 73 | 75 | 76 | 68 | 74 | ** | Demare | 72 | 66 | 79 | 71 | 81 | 80 | * | Gesbert | 71 | 74 | 80 | 78 | 68 | 73 | * | Sepulveda | 69 | 74 | 76 | 71 | 69 | 71 | ** | Madouas | 74 | 75 | 77 | 73 | 73 | 73 | * | Phinney | 71 | 83 | 75 | 71 | 70 | 72 | * | Ewan | 75 | 64 | 71 | 71 | 83 | 81 | ** |
Wirtgen comes back with on paper the best team time-trial, so it will come down if the puncheurs can limit their losses then gain back time on the final stage. Gidich and Buchmann should be best placed and should have the least amount of time to make up, bonus seconds could be enough for either of them. The likes of Areruya, De Bie and Romo will need to do more to get into contention.
| FL | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Grosu | 73 | 73 | 74 | 79 | 83 | 80 | Ewan | 75 | 71 | 73 | 80 | 83 | 81 | Cullaigh | 74 | 67 | 73 | 78 | 82 | 81 | Enger | 73 | 69 | 71 | 77 | 81 | 78 | Kanter | 75 | 67 | 75 | 77 | 81 | 80 | Demare | 72 | 79 | 74 | 79 | 81 | 80 | Abdul Halil | 70 | 60 | 71 | 77 | 81 | 79 | Vesely | 73 | 68 | 74 | 76 | 81 | 80 | Aniolkowski | 76 | 66 | 76 | 79 | 80 | 79 | Hayakawa | 73 | 65 | 75 | 76 | 79 | 79 |
Grosu and Ewan are the clear top two sprinters in the race, hopefully that doesn't spell doom for them. On the other hand Cullaigh is also due a good race. Still the list of sprinters is deep when we only now get to riders like Enger, Kanter, Demare and others. This definitely should be one of the strongest startlists given this isn't a clear sprinters race.

The reason why our Giro TTT lineup was so bad - we send all our 3 time - trial specialists here, hoping we can salvage a good result in the GC for one of our leaders.
Grosu survived quite well the final stage last year so he's our first bet for the GC here, but guys like Kron and Remco are ready to take over in case the final stage is too hard.
Even with sacrificing the Giro TTT, our TTT line up here is not very good so hoping we don't lose too much time in that stage.

This is most definetely a race where we're racing. Absolutely 0 expectations for us, just hope that the PT teams take the lion's share of the points!

APP is here for the GC, but the combination of the TTT and a probably not selective enough final stage clearly hits our hopes here. Maybe we have some riders in the breaks ...

A top 5 goal for us, which we were never likely to achieve and clearly decided to double down on that by not sending either of our top two TTers. I am sure there was some logic to all that. Would be happy with a top 20 but fear total anonymity is a possibility.
Love to see Zalgiris fielding all Lithuanian team. Congrats to Quad on that milestone.

Well not quite had I only sent 6 riders then that would've been true. Very close though

Congrats to Scorchio, it's nice to see one of the sprint favourites actually take a win!
After we missed the break APP making the split was all we could hope for. That probably even promotes his GC chances, so let's hope he'll be attentive in stage 2 as well.

Grosu alone in the wind quite early but he still managed to hang and actually came very close to a stage win. The podium will have to do.
Kron losing time is quite a blow for us, but at least Remco was in the leading group.
I see Grosu is still wearing the normal Rabobank shirt, instead of the Romanian champion one. I hope that at least whoever will report the Tour de France will use the updated db. (though I hope Grosu will be wearing green for most of the race anyway )

KB started the Giro a while back before I fixed the CDB I think. Should be good going forward.
Narvaez made the split, that is all we can ask for. Would be nice to get in a break some time.

While Ulrich is technically right on the Giro coverage Grosu wasn't in the race at all and I think alex meant the ToL

Oops got my threads confused, there is a corrected CDB out there, Abhi may not have picked it up.

11th is a very strong result in this field for Hayakawa. Would just love to see him perform where he actually is a candidate for a noticeable result. We don't really have expectations here. There's a case to be made for the breakaway potential of the squad, but seeing as they have all already grouped in the final positions of the 1st stage it's unlikely we score a single point from this event.
Congrats on the win, Scorchio!
