[PTM] Giro d‘Italia -- Stage 1

Ciao e benvenuto al Giro d'Italia! The first Grand Tour of the year starts with nearly 120 km of pan flat roads, but it won’t be one for the sprinters nonetheless as that’s only the warming up for a hill festival in the last 50 km. The finish is also on top of a short climb, so it’ll be a fight between the puncheurs and the GC riders today – and with “fight” we mean it’ll be a huge surprise if the one man who stands for both categories won’t take his first stage win today: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Silvio Herklotz. He’s also the big favourite for taking the maglia rosa in the end, but the biggest question will actually be if he’ll wear it for the entire Giro and how many stages he’ll win.

The first attackers of this year’s edition are Andorran NC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Ponce and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Kvist. They’re joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Laporte shortly afterwards.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0002.jpg

50 km into the race the three leaders fight for the first intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Kvist takes the win in a close call against pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Laporte. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Quita were the only ones fighting for the remaining points back in the peloton. The lead is 4’19.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0003.jpg

It’s rather dull for the next 60 km, but with 51 km to go the leaders arrive at the foot of the first of today’s five climbs. The first four are rated cat. 4. But we’ll see how many of those KoM sprints go to the break as their lead is already down to 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Kvist attacked for the KoM points and lead nearly till the top, but in the end pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Laporte is the first one at the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Ponce is 3rd but also already 36’’ behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0005.jpg

The Andorran NC didn’t make it back in the descent but more importantly there is a first split in the peloton. There are 27 riders in front with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Mohoric and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Plapp the most important puncheurs and GC riders on the wrong side of the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Laporte also takes the second KoM sprint which could already be enough to wear the jersey in the next days. The split in the peloton persists which results in a high pace, so he’s already alone in front and just 26’’ in front of the chasing group of GC favourites where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy take the remaining points. The three big puncheurs dropped earlier are in the first chasing group, but are also already a minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0007.jpg

With 30 km to go the break is history as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Leknessund is pulling in the last longer flat section of the stage. The gap to the chasing puncheurs is still about a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy wins the third KoM sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz. The group is down to 20 riders with the puncheur threesome still chasing and still about a minute behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0009.jpg

The puncheurs make it back in the descent. They were brought back by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Errazkin after some riders of the front group lost contact over the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy leads the group over the top of the penultimate climb, so he’ll wear the blue jersey tomorrow. Behind him it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0011.jpg

With 5 km to go we have the first attack from the leading group as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Fouche tries to get away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0012.jpg

The attack doesn’t stick and with 2 km to go we see the rainbow jersey at the front when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz takes over control. Will someone be able to get past him today?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0013.jpg

The WC is the first one to start his sprint with about 1.4 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko is on his side with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo also in a good position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eav.png Mohoric have to pay for the chasing earlier and are already dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0014.jpg

700 m to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz and he’s still looking good in contrast to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko in 2nd position who is done. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Carboni are still sprinting though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0015.jpg

But they never get close to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz who takes his first stage win of the Giro. Will it also be the last one in the rainbow jersey in this year’s edition?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0016.jpg

Behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gzl.png Carboni come in 2nd and 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Geoghegan Hart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Choi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Almeida are 4th to 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Herklotz even gets a gap of 7’’. He also takes the points lead though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Aranburu will wear the jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/cdb.png Carthy is the first man in blue.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kng.png Chaiyasombat is the leader in the U25 classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/GTM/Giro/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png ZARA - Irizar leads the team classification by a mere second.
