Stage 5 Report

The final stage of the Tour of Norway takes the riders 198k. Along the way there are two cat 4 climbs and 5 sprint points, including one just 2k from the finish. Not as much climbing as yesterday but a number of punchy bergs.

The puncheurs are the favorites.

First sprint goes to Van Moer, Uwizeyimana, and Arias Villanueva. Lead is 3’39 with 139k to go. Indosat keeping things under control.

At the first Cat 4 Uwizeyimana just holds off a late charge from Pellaud. Aria Villanueva third. None of these riders had any KOM points at the start of the day so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Müller is safe in his KOM jersey. Peloton at 4’40 with 95k to go, Minions and Sony – Force India near the front now.

Sprint at 72k also goes to Van Moer ahead of Perez and Pellaud. Peloton has the lead down to 3’41 with Tafjord (Belevics), Sony – Force India (Tresize) and Minions (Paleni) working.

Final KOM goes to Le Gac ahead of Pellaud and Uwizeyimana. The Rwandan led most of the climb but faltered in the final meters. He and Pellaud are tied for 8th in the KOM jersey competition, so no big movement there.

Van Moer makes it 3 for 3 on the sprints. Perez and Arias Villanueva are 2nd and 3rd this time. The lead is 3’17 with 49k to ride. All these sprint points have moved Van Moer into virtual 3rd in that competition.

The next sprint point also goes to Van Moer.

20k to go for the break, as they start the penultimate and most significant remaining climb, they still have 2’24. Uwizeyimana started the day 2’02 behind on GC with Van Moer at 2’35 and the latter has picked up 24 bonus seconds. They probably aren’t a threat to race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Dunbar but they could move up a lot. Indosat must think he is safe as they have left all the chasing to the three teams mentioned above. Peloton still at 172 riders with nobody important dropped.

There have been splits in the peloton with a 58 rider lead group 44 seconds ahead of the next 72. Highest ranked rider to miss the split is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Johannessen (18th on GC).

The break hit the top of the final climb with a lead of 1’56 and 5k to ride. The chase has slowed as only tired riders are on the front despite the group swelling back to 128. It looks like the stage will go to the break but the GC top 10 is also in serious jeopardy. They may need to chase a little harder.

3k to go, Van Moer attacks. The lead is 2’09, could this be a huge gc turn up. Indosat have only now found a fresh rider for the chase – it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Hefnar.

1.8k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Uwizeyimana brings the others back to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Van Moer, who had opened up a small gap. But the Belgian still takes the sprint points and 6 more seconds. Lead is 2’04, Dunbar’s lead could still be at risk with bonus seconds but certainly some of the rest of the top 10 are going to lose places to Uwizeyimana and Van Moer (the others in the break are all at least 3’50 down). Calmejane at 41 seconds behind the leaders, he was 3’16 down to start the day so he isn’t a GC threat either.

Approaching the 1k banner Uwizeyimana opens the sprint. He has done a lot of work and Van Moer looks spent, the others could take the bonus seconds which might matter a lot in the GC. Uwizeyimana has taken 8 seconds at intermediate sprints. The lead right now is 2’04.

600 meters. Perez has the lead. Peloton at 2’08, the sprint will start soon in the peloton which should shave some seconds.

300 meters, Perez leads Pellaud then Uwizeyimana and then Le Gac. Peloton at 2’13, Dunbar not safe yet.

Now we wait for final time gaps. Have Indosat thrown away what should have been an insurmountable GC lead?

And the answer is yes. The gap is 1’55 and with 16 bonus seconds pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Uwizeyimana is the very surprised winner of the 2024 Tour of Norway. What a huge turn up for Bralirwa. Dunbar does hold on to 2nd but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Van Moer knocks pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Ioannidis off the podium. ELCO were near the front but didn’t really help with the chase, perhaps a misjudgment on their part.

Van Moer also takes over the points lead from Dunbar, so big scoring for the CT team.
