Stage 4 Report

Stage 4 is the first and probably hardest hilly stage of the race. The KOM should be in play with 4 Cat 3 climbs plus Cat 2 points at the finish. There is also a sprint point included in the 193 kilometers. Last year an 11-rider group contested the finish but another 55 riders finished just 27 seconds down.

The stage favorites are the punchy riders and they are all well down in the GC, except the last man on the list.

It is absolutely pouring as the races starts and only KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/llv.png Jarc seems to have the appetite for an attack, he quickly builds a lead of 1’16.

20k gone now, multiple riders trying to attack, Tafjord and Sauber particularly prominent, but nobody can get so much as a second. It has had the impact of reducing Jarc’s lead to 34 seconds.

Jarc is almost brough back but just before he is caught 6 riders get across to him and that marks the end of the beginning as they are allowed some freedom. With 155k to go they have reached the first KOM climb. The same 3 take the sprint bonus but with Mckenna ahead of Müller. Lead is 4’21.

Moving ahead to the second KOM, Indosat have been relieved at the front of the peloton by Ekoi (Lund Andresen and Le Gac) and Lierse (Mareczko, Weemaes). The lead is 5’38 which is about where it has been sitting for a while. This is the longest climb of the day at around 8k.

Jarc tries hard at the top but can’t hang with the others. Same 3 take the points but this time the order is McKenna, Ludvigsson and Müller. Peloton at 4’16. Jarc still has the virtual KOM by 1 point ahead of Ludviggson.

Some hard chasing on the downhill sees some splits in the peloton but they come back together although 13 riders are distanced, most notably pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Kusi, 23rd on GC.

At the next Cat 3 it is the same three but this time Müller leads and McKenna is 2nd. This means all 3 of them are tied on 12 points in the KOM. Jarc drops to 4th in that competition. Peloton at 3’53.

The lead goes out over 4 minutes by the time the peloton reaches the top but they close that on the descent (without causing gaps this time) and as they start the final Cat 3 it is back down to 2’53. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Dlamini on the front, ISA-Hexacta have been joining EKOI and Lierse in the chase.

At the top Dulanjana breaks the KOM monopoly by taking 3rd from Ludvigsson. Müller wins it and will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow assuming the peloton takes the points at the finish. Although with only 35k and the finishing climb left to tackle the break has a chance as their lead is 2’50. A handful more riders dropped from the peloton but none of them are GC threats.

22k to go, Jarc and Changsheng are caught, the rest of the break has 2 minutes still. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Feiereisen on the front. But they are able to get back on soon after.

A 135-rider peloton hits the base of the final climb 1’01 behind the break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Yudha on the front. The climb is about 6.5k. Knotten has been dropped again and won’t make it back this time.

Kmielauskas also leads the best young rider competition.
